Anke Eissmann

I've been noticing a lot of her pictures in the Gallery, and I must say I really like them. They are really nicely executed paintings, very colorful and detailed. She is not as famous as a lot of other Tolkien artists (Lee, Howe, Nasmith, etc), but really seems to have an impressive body of work.

She seems to depict a lot of the smaller, "quieter" moments from the books rather than "wide shots" or grandiose battle scenes, and I appreciate that. I feel her work captures the subtle emotional content of the novels very well.

Full gallery listings for Anke Eissmann

"Visions of Middle-Earth (an article about the artist)

Anke's website

(Also, she seems to have a teeny Faramir fixation-- not a bad thing at all!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>)

I really do admire her work. It's quite wonderful and truley captures the emotional depth in many of the scenes she depicts. I spent hours trying to figure out why I was so captivated by this one: http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/eiszmann/Eowyn_and_Faramir.jpg I suppose it's something in Eowyn's eyes. She doesn't get the same credit as Howe or Lee, but she certainly deserves it.

Also, she seems to have a teeny Faramir fixation-- not a bad thing at all
Of course it's not a bad thing. Plus practice makes perfect. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Oh my goodness do I love her work! Everything she does is just fantastic. I love her use of color.

In forcing myself to pick a favorite I boiled it down to just two (which was very hard to do)...

Beren't Trial

Luthien prepares her escape from Hirilorn

I wonder if she's seen this... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Some of her paintings were sort of published on a CD-Rom in Germany. But other than that, Harper Collins and Co. seem to be blind still. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Nice thread, this <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thanks a lot for your comments on my artwork, folks. As for publications ... well, Canamarth is right, it's really hard getting stuff published. HarperCollins Publishers seem to be extremely reluctant to accept Tolkien-artwork from new artists, which is a real pity. They appear to hold the opinion that Lee, Nasmith and Howe are all they need, and moreover all people want. But I'm planning on contacting them again some time soon. Perhaps they have changed their mind.

As for the Faramir-fixation ... well, I would be lying by claiming that I don't like the character, as certain threads down in the Prancing Pony (and the artwork, of course) show. But after what PJ and his screenwriters have done to the character I felt that there was need of presenting some alternative to the ... thing which in the movie passed as Faramir <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I'm worried about Harper Collins too. They seem to forget that, as bad as this sounds, their current artists aren't going to be around forever. It is in their own interest to find new talent.

Still, the likes of Alan Lee, Howe and Nasmith have nearly interpreted all the scenes there are between them. There aren't that many areas left really. I have seen several interpretations of the same scene same by the same artist, especially Nasmith. As much as I admire the three of them, there is still need for new stuff to come into publication.
People will want to start seeing new versions of those scenes. Harper Collins will have to realise that.
More the nice company than the beer, I reckon <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> And the haradaic meals and stuff.

As for new pics, well, I've just finished the one with Tuor and Ulmo, and there are several scenes from that story waiting for a treatment in watercolour. And after having watched the matrix, the thought of drawing a certain character in a long tunic is rather appealing <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Well, we'll see. First I have to get my uni-stuff done.
