I am indeed still in touch with her. She is pretty busy at the moment with all sorts of work, not the least of which is an illustration job for a quite well-known fantasy series. I was so happy when I heard about the commission. I'll try and drag her in here. Guess she should be the one to disclose anything about it (if she is indeed allowed to do so). :)

Dragging was successful ;)

It's true, I haven't been to TORC for ... don't know, ages. I'm rather at Board77 or Emyn Arnen, but even there I don't post much.

As for the commission, the first pic of it is up on my website, the others will follow once the book, "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik has been released in the special edition. The website is also a good place to see what I'm up to, as I update it fairly regularly.

Due to commissions and my other jobs I haven't managed to produce much Tolkien-inspired artwork lately, but I hope this will increase again. I certainly miss it.

Nice to hear that it's simply being fully employed that has kept you offline :) I've checked your website occasionally (although not just recently), and have noticed that you and LoR still write a story on b77, but my own presence on that site is also quite sporadic.

I must say that, I almost prefer your Temeraire paintings over the Tolkien artwork, maybe because I haven't read Novik's books, and so don't have my own mental image of the characters. ;)

Anke seems to be quite well employed as an illustrator now. 8)

Yeah. She even cut back some of the hours at her "normal" job to have a bit more time for illustrations. I'm really glad she made it in the world of illustrators. :)

Really liking Anke's cover for new fantasy magazine Fastitocalon. And her illustrated Beowulf is just amazing.

Anke designed a box for apple juice bottled (or rather boxed) locally in a village near which I grew up. :)

Searching for other artwork, I found this joint Jenny Dolfen/Anke Eissman work. This may have been posted earlier in the thread, but I don't remember seeing it. Celegorn Curufin

2011 HI/NETS Calendar

Postby Parmastahir Took » Mon Jan 03, 2011 8:07 am

If we are singing the praises of Ms. Eissmann, please let me add to the chorus. She very generously let me use some of her illustrations to create the 2011 Heren Istarion/Northeast Tolkien Society calendar. Everyone who has seen it (also featuring the works of Sue Wookey and a cover by Jef Murray) has absolutely loved it. It is now the fourth in that series (which you can find out more about at www.tolkiencalendars.com.) She has been most giving of her time (which it would seem she has little to spare) over the years as I have written to her to ask questions. I certainly wish her continued success and hope that she will continue to create Tolkien-related works.

Postby Parmastahir Took » Fri Apr 01, 2011 4:31 am

Hello to all -

Just posted the Calendar of the Month for April at:

www.tolkiencalendars.com

As this is the Anke Eissmann thread, it seems appropriate to inform you that this calendar features her works. Hope you enjoy it. Happy Spring to all!

I have to inform you that Anke has entered a Benedict Cumberbatch fan girl zone from which it is difficult to extract her these days. At least he'll feature in The Hobbit movie so she'll soon be back in the right franchise. :D

Anke has good taste. :)

And Benedict Cumberbatch actually looks like an Anke drawing. He looks like he'd walked out of one of her pictures.

There's an exhibition of some of Anke's works during and after the Wetzlar Days of Fantasy this September. Announcement is only in German but if you click on the picture you get the full-size dragon. :)

Something of Anke's to collect - and support the German Tolkien Society at the same time:

But note that shipping to non-society members will only start next year (if there are some left over, that is). Details - also in English - will follow then.

Anke designed a wonderful poster for the upcoming Tolkien Seminar in Jena in April for the German Tolkien Society. Inspired by The Usual Suspects ... Totally cool!

I'm bumping a few threads due to a Silm discussion (or just comment, really) over in the Books forum. Unfortunately some of the very old posts have links that no longer work. Later links, do. I'm not sure how to fix that.

Elm, I think the only way is to post new links, or ask a mod to edit the old ones (unless they were posted by you in the first place, then you can edit them yourself).

I figured out part of the problem is the links that went to the TORC Galleries were still using the old TolkienOnline name (a former name of this forum, now used by the Tolkien Estate). So I guess they were disabled. I posted a new thread linking right to the current TORC galleries. I was quite surprised to see Anke Eissman was listed under "fan art" instead of "professional artist" (she is professional). That surprised me! But interested folks can poke around various areas of the Gallery. There is good stuff in there.

Yes, Anke is a professional artist and illustrator now. But, at the time she submitted her works to the TORC gallery, I think she was still studying, or teaching art, or something - at least, she didn't support herself with her artwork.
