The Art Challenge Thread:-)

The artistic interpretation of Tolkien's imagination can be breathtaking. Or it can be appalling... Join in on the discussion of the artistic representations and collectible items in the Tolkien universe.

This came up on the "advice for young artists of any age" thread. How about a thread for art "challenges" to inspire those who are "out of ideas"?

Since this is TORC, I suppose they ought to, overall, be at least somewhat Tolkien related.

Post your "challenges" here, and then anyone who takes up the challenge, be sure to link us to the resulting image!

The first suggestion, made somewhat tongue in cheek, was to do a boring still life but spice it up by somehow including dragons.

any other challenges, anyone? And any takers on the challenges?

Here's another - pick an often drawn scene from the books (not movies) and draw it... totally differently. That is, changing setting, very different depiction of characters, non typical style, etc (and if you come up with something more different than Biker Finarfin... well, I'll be impressed!)

This is a good idea. They have these in Wetcanvas, an art forum I visit regularly.

It's unfortunate I can't oblige at the moment though because I am bogged down with animal portrait commissions right now.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

I'll have to deff. practice drawing my dragons before I do the real thing...

question: Still life? You mean like a movie still? or something? It's a picture of action? or something?

Pip

Biker Finarfin
Elmtree I'm sure you'll be happy to know that the maniacal laughter that this caused to explode from my room has now thoroughly convinced my finally that I am insane. I'd try to actually draw it, but I think that would make them commit me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Interesting concept Elmtree I like your ideas <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> and it'll be fun to see what people come up with!

Shieldmaiden_pippin A still life is a form of realism painting that was developed in the late 19th century and it involves painting things from life ie. portraits, landscapes... specifically those pictures you see of flowers or bowls of fruit of bottles on a shelf and basically stuff like that <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> hope that helps

I'd like to challenge someone, and this isn't all that funny or anything but I'm working on a painting of when Aragorn goes to see Gilraen for the last time. I've yet to see a drawing of that scene which is one of my favourites and I'd like to see how other people see that particular scene.

Namarie,
*~Arwen
I'm thinking up an idea now, I'm deciding whether or not to accept the challenge <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Would a serpent do, instead of a dragon? Because I drew a...almost modern depiction of Eve taking the apple from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, except that it's a clay basket full of apples and a woman's hand grabbing one, with a snake slithering around the basket, and on the pot are the two trees, one is the Tree of Eternal life, and the other of Knowledge of Good and evil.

I must say I'm rather fond of it (even though it's not really done)...lol.

pip

Sounds good to me! If anyone can creatively make the challenge *better*, go fer it!

You guys are inspiring me to try my hand at a few things... I'm so bad, though, except for "doodles on the pad by the phone".

I bought some graph paper to help with proportion... and as I was attempting to draw, my teenaged daughter came by and started to laugh.

So... well... my six year old now has the pad, and is drawing on it. Oh well.

I'll just see what you guys come up with!

Okay... the Silm artwork on this forum caused me to look into the Silm stories more (I'd only read a bit, previously).

I've absolutely fallen for Maedhros and Maglor. (Man, talk about depressing stories with interesting characters!)

Now, I realize there is some controversy over Maglor's "end"... if he ended at all.

"And it is told of Maglor that he could not endure the pain with which the Silmaril tormented him; and he cast it at last into the Sea, and thereafter he wandered ever upon the shores, singing in pain and regret beside the waves..."

This leads me to another Challenge. If he's still ever wandering the shores-- what's he doing now? Selling Snowcones? A hunky life guard with burned hands?

C'mon someone... draw this "what ever happend to Maglor" updated to 2004. I challenge you. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

-edit-
since this comment is more or less offtopic for the art forum, but on topic for the challenge mentioned in this thread, I thought I'd edit my "find" into the original post. I just ran across a very well written fanfic that answers (in words) "where's Maglor". It was an enjoyable read! (and maybe someone could illustrate it.. hint hint<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>) www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1621252 ('nother edit-- dang link didn't work! you'll have to cut n past the url)

I've got most of the fruit done- just the grapes and a big ol' squash left. Then the dragons and a bottle of wine and the tablecloth etc. Done with watercolor pencils and regular colored pencils and maybe a little acrylic by the time I'm done.

Elmtree- I'm looking forward to your evil challange <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>

I like the idea of challenges (forever out of ideas, me) but Biker Finarfin's patronage over this thread scares me<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>.

I'm not taking up Beach Life Maglor.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> You know what I thought would be fun, when I saw this thread...if the challenges meant two (or more?) people had to draw the same theme, by a given date, and then show the result.

it's a challenge for as many as want to take it on! I fear unless I'm sure I have "takers", a date would not work.

No "Beach Life Maglor"? Dang, that's one of my favorites! Another friend of mine, on another "where's Maglor" thread I had elsewhere, said he's probably one of those folks you see at the Mall... you are afraid to approach because there's just something "not right" about him...:-D

But I want to see the speculations put in art form on paper! (or computer!).

Okay... my evil challenge. Folks do a lot of artwork based on the Peter Jackson Movie characters, rather than the characters as they picture them in their own mind.

All those scenes... with movie faces.

What I want to know is-- We Have Had A Barbie and Ken "Arwen/Aragorn" set out for YEARS NOW! Why no Barbie and Ken artwork!? (hey, photography would work as well). Why not scenes from the book with THOSE faces in the correct spots? Huh? Huh? I sense predjudice.

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

It's a challenge.

I'd definitely be in on a Beach Maglor or a Biker Finarfin. I've already got a Chibi and a yaoi Meadhros on my conscience. Things certainly can't get any worse than that! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Aw, C'mon guys! No one taking a challenge? The forum has been so quiet this week!

I'm not an artist, as I've said before, but since I am putting this out, I figured I'd take the plunge. Here is my "Maglor 2004"

http://mysite.verizon.net/vze754y7/doodles/

(it's the first doodle-- i bet the link doesn't work, but just cut n paste!).

And if I can do this- anyone can!

(the graph paper was used because... well, it was sitting on my son's bed, which is next to the computer... and I decided to do the challenge...and just picked up the pad of graph paper. No great artistic reason!)

Hey Elmtree! The Maglor pic was really cute (I especially like the little girl pointing through the cracks.)

Another Challenge- I think it would be really cool to do the scene 'The Voice of Saruman' from Wormtounge's perspective- standing on the upper balcony looking down and trying to decide who to smash with the palintir.
Maybe that'll snag someone <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
