Best Howard Shore music?

Postby siddharth » Thu Dec 20, 2012 12:31 am

As air is to life, as soul is to the body so is Howard Shore's music to LOTR and TH.
Please rank Shore's top 5 creations.

My top 3:

1. "Concerning Hobbits"
2. "The Ring goes South"
3. "Helm's Deep"
4. "Grey Havens"
5. "Misty Mountains"

My favorite is also 'Concerning Hobbits'. The introduction is just so beautiful and melodic, it takes you to a special place, and I don't know...it's just really special!

Concerning Hobbits
The Breaking of the Fellowship
The Grey Havens
The Adventure Begins
Erebor

I'm quite partial to "Erebor" and quite uphappy not to hear it in the films. It's at once part of the Rings world and unlike anything else we're heard.

I'd have to think a while before I could do a good top 5 list. But, Concerning Hobbits has to be #1.

With the release of DOS, time to update my list( as it has quite a few selections from it)

My top 10 tracks would be;

Concerning hobbits,
Misty Moutains
Amon-Hen
Breaking of the Fellowship
the Rohan-theme
Isengard's theme
Charge of the Rohirrim
Fellowship theme (especially during the final charge at the Black Gate)
I can't pick one - so all the themes for Smaug in DOS. Absolutely terrific.
Beyond the Forest (DOS)

As for songs in sequence;

May It Be, In Dreams, Into the West, Song of the Lonely Mountain, Gollum's Song and a million miles away ..... I see Fire.

Oh...uh...well, it's been a long time since I listened, but my very favorite has always been Aníron.

I 'lir en êl luitha 'uren!

The Nazgûl music, of course. I would love to see the score for that, and to read it while it's playing!

Into the West always intrigued me, until I saw Annie Lennox perform it. "...a pale moon RISES..." I could NOT figure out how she got that sound "RISES", until I saw it. I can't do that. It's amazing.

uhhh...let's see...Breath of Life. I want that played at my funeral/memorial service, when the time comes, as the last piece of the prelude to whatever service they come up with. (No, I'm not dying or even ill, thank you. Just saying...)

And I can't think just now what it is called, but it's the music that plays when beacons are lit and Aragorn shouts, "Gondor calls for aid!"

That's all I can think of right now. I may come back after I give a listen to the music again. It's been about a decade since.
"And it is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance else that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen."

There is something profound about standing AT sea level.

The Lighting of the Beacons has to be pretty high on my list....followed in no particular order, by The Breaking of the Fellowship from FotR, plus the haunting Rohan theme, and The White Rider from TTT. I also adore the Elven motif for Rivendell and Enya's Aníron. With the new trilogy I must add The World is Ahead, Feast of Starlight and Beyond the Forest to my favourites!
