It's Denethor! He's gone looney, I tell ya!

What do you think of Tolkien on the silver screen...? Whether Bakshi, Jackson, or whoever else, come on in and discuss your reflections, opinions, and memories...

It's Denethor! He's gone looney, I tell ya!

My daughter is watching the Rankin Bass Return of the King with her friend. Daughter is a grown up (she's twenty) so it's not a little kid movie viewing. it's an adult LOTR book and movie fan having fun watching something that is... just...um... special. Really special.

She said at one point "Its' a shame Howard Shore can't write music like this."

I feel like I'm sitting in an episode of Mystery Science Fiction Theatre right now.

I will say "Where there's a whip, there's a way" is a fun song.

I still fine myself occasionally quoting
Where there's a whip, there's a way!
Especially when someone is metaphorically cracking the whip. :)

I love the Minstrels beginning to the movie..."Frodo, of the Nine fingers, and the Ring of Doom...Why does he have nine fingers, where is the Ring of Doom?" So funny.

Truly a special piece of work.

Saw it for the first time tonight. I burst out laughing at the Disco Phial (and, yes, the songs are priceless. The wearer of the Ring...).

One thing I did notice though - in marked contrast to Jackson, the focus is heavily on Frodo and Sam and their journey through Mordor, rather than what is going on to the West. It's a daft, nonsensical film in many ways, but it does get to the heart of the Quest.

Well the cartoon is subtitled 'A Story of the Hobbits', after all. The king of the title was pretty much just a background figure himself.

Either way, anyone who wasn't familiar with the source material would have been left scratching their heads.

In other news, I still have Where There's a Whip There's a Way stuck in my head.
