bread

there's a scene when frodo and sam are on the road where sam lies on his back and starts eating something that looks like bread. as any medical person with a knowledge of choking hazards will tell you this is a dangerous thing to do and should not be presented on film as ok behaviour.

There's a scene when Frodo and Sam are on the road and cross a haunted marsh and see ghostly figures. As any medical person with a knowledge of undead hazards will tell you this is a dangerous thing to do and should not be presented on film as ok behaviour.

There's a scene when Frodo and Sam are on the road and nearly get consumed by lava on the slopes of Mount Doom. As any medical person with a knowledge of burning hazards will tell you this is a dangerous thing to do and should not be presented on film as ok behaviour.

There's a scene when Frodo and Sam are on the road and almost get get eaten by a giant squid-like creature. As any medical person with a knowledge of cephalopod hazards will tell you this is a dangerous thing to do and should not be presented on film as ok behaviour.

No, you're quite right, and this is clearly the proper venue in which to raise these H&S concerns. Surely, many vulnerable young people will have seen Frodo and Sam's dangerous bread-eating-while-leaning-backwards antics, and wanted to copy them. They will naturally have first waited a decade or so after the film's release before acting it out, and then first searched the web for the premiere forum* which discusses these matters, and naturally will have homed in on a thread with the title "bread" to find further guidance. I am humbled to think of the lives which will be saved by this public service announcement.

I haven''t read or posted in a long time and it's delightful to come back to this. I'm being very serious.....the memories of the older days when insanity ran amuck. This has brought me joy. I am happy. And safer. Yup. :)

And....I really want some good bread. I would eat it sitting up.

Wenchie! So nice to see you! *hands her a loaf a bread* Home-made! Just out of the oven! Not a bun in the oven, mind you, but a proper crusty loaf. With butter. Tater soup too! :D

So, if it's that dangerous, how did they film it, is what I'd like to know.

Was it trick photography and Frodo and Sam were actually standing up, with the camera sideways?
Or did they use a stunt double?
Or did they risk Sean Astin's life in a totally irresponsible way? I mean, I guess they had first aid staff on set, but still...
