water plays a big part in the film. gollum is always seen in water, no doubt because he likes eating fish - the cave where he lost the ring to bilbo, the forbidden pool below faramir, the river where he's fishing with the first ring finder, the marshes near mordor.

then there's other water scenes - the waterfalls of rivendell, the rain slashed army of orcs., the foaming horses washing away the black riders, the river carrying the army of the dead, laketown, the lake with the giant octopus, the river with the destroyed gondor city next to it, orcs quietly rowing ashore with the splash of oars and falling ramps, 4 hobbits outside the gates to the town in bree, soaked to the skin. ridley scott is famous for his use of water - rain in bladerunner and the japanese film with m douglas. how did we ever get by without it?

water is sometimes used to add a Romantic edge to things. the rivendell landscape for example is impossibly picturesque, it's idyllic, magical looking.

sensible thoughts about water encouraged
