What do you think of Tolkien on the silver screen...? Whether Bakshi, Jackson, Amazon, BBC radio play, or whoever else, come on in and discuss your reflections, opinions, and memories...
is there anything to suggest that the 'weed' smoked by hobbits isnt more like cannabis than tobacco? looking at the film as tho gandalf and bilbo were potheads gives it a new dimension.
another point is that the smoking habit seems to have acquired a rather sexist demographic. i'm sure women in history have smoked pipes. not so in hobbiton.
i just noticed that word 'habit', certainly another credible etymology for the word hobbit given their very conservative way of life.

I doubt it very much. When Tolkien wrote the books, pipes were pretty common, plus he doesn't come across to me as a pothead.

Any resemblance between pipe-weed and marijuana is the fault of Peter Jackson and his team. Tolkien's pipe-weed is meant to be a kind of tobacco and is even identified as such in The Hobbit (in the very last sentence of the story if nowhere else).
