M00bies - A Community to Remember

Postby Iavas_Saar » Thu Jan 27, 2005 9:05 am

TheOneRing.Com Movies forum, 2000 -
2005

And so we come to it at last, the third age of m00bies
is over, and it will soon be time for many of its
inhabitants to sail into the West. As for Tolkien's
elves, it's a bittersweet parting - the world is
changed, and we have to say our farewells to the land
we loved. It's been an amazing journey, an experience
that's enriched many of our lives.

So let us join together and create something we can
all take with us. Something we can keep to always
remind us of the happy days we spent here. Something
we can dig out of a closet in 30 years time, when TORC
may well be long gone, to make the memories come
flooding back.

What I propose is that we create a m00bies 'family
tree' - a record of all the posters who've helped make
this journey special for us. With everyone's help, I
will build up an alphabetical list of m00bies posters,
both past and present, with a profile on each, so that
we'll always remember them and their personal style.

There will be two stages to this. Firstly, the 'final
community', the ones of us still here at the end, need
to report in. Then, we need to submit profiles for the
m00bs no longer with us. I'm sure no one person can
remember *everyone* who's made a good contribution
here, so if you can think of someone not yet on the
list, make them known!

For each person who reports in personally, you can
choose to write your own profile, or if you're too
modest to sing your own praises, ask one of your
m00bies friends to write it for you. And if you're
suggesting a past m00b, again you can do a profile for
them yourselves, or request that someone else do it.

When writing a profile, either for yourself or someone
else, perhaps include things such as gender, join
date, age group, the persons general stance on the
movies (happy with, unhappy with, mixed), what sort of
posts they used to make, who they most often debated
with etc. Just anything that will help in remembering
them many years in the future.

Also, if you want to give a personal testament about a
poster, beyond their main profile, because they were
particularly special to you, you can do that too, and
I will add your quote to their profile.

Once the list is complete as we can make it, then we
can all print it out and keep it in a safe place. (I
will be printing out the threads listed in the META
movie forum as well to accompany it).

Below I've tried to make a comprehensive list of past
and present members it would be nice to have profiles
for. I'm sure there are some I've missed out, and I
would welcome suggestions of more people to add -
either past members you remember, or current TORCers
we need to track down. Those I have profiles for
already are in bold, those it would be nice to have

Iavas_Saar (Past Member)

Gender: Male
Age or age group when joined: 22
Most well-known 'title': "His Rosyness"
General stance on Jackson's LOTR: Very happy!

Description: (in his own words)
I joined TORC after posting for several months at
Ringbearer (along with Leonides*). It was during the
build-up to FOTR, when Kelennar was raging against
every rumour, and Leo was the new kid on the block
standing up to him. I joined him against Kel, and over
time became known as one of the primary defenders of
Jackson's adaption. I often clashed with those unhappy
with the films - most notably Hama, Saranthir,
Mithfanion, GandalfsMother, Lord_Baltimore,
Bandobras_Took, Beleg, eli_cash, Queen_Beruthiel,
halplm and Semprini (yes, the list is long!). My
threads have included surveys about the popularity of
the changes made for the film adaptions, and lists of
"Magic Moments" from the films. Generally, if there
was ever a fierce purist vs. revisionist debate
occuring, I was likely to be found there!

I was one of the people who attended the first ever UK
TORCmoot (then many subsequent ones that got bigger
and bigger), where I found that TORCers are even more
wonderful in real life, and made many good friends as
a result. The first moot, held in Oxford in the summer
of 2002, was particularly memorable for the fact that
I had only planned to stay one day, but when the
evening came I found I did not want to leave, and I
ended up missing all my trains home. EdaintheRanger
did exactly the same thing as me, and we ended up
spending the entire night on the streets of Oxford.
Eventually I was so tired that I found a park bench to
lie down on - which was joked about for some time
after. :P Every subsequent moot had new things to
offer, and great new people to meet.

For having such a positive view of the movies, I was
dubbed as wearing "rose-coloured glasses" by Hama and
Saranthir. Although I was initially not that thrilled
by this, it caught on and became my 'trademark'. At
the first TORCmoot I was given a real pair of rosy
lenses by Berhael, and the resulting photo, somehow,
led to a Movies swooning thread for me. One of my
swooners, Eruname127, went on to make *me* swoon for
her in real life, and we quickly fell in love. In late
2004 I moved over to the US to live with her, and to
get married, and was amazed by the outpouring of good
wishes, cards and gifts from other TORCers who were
following our story.

The Movies forum (and the rosy lenses!) therefore
changed my life forever.

I guess I should add, I hope no one is put off from submitting a profile by the fact that they haven't posted or been involved in as much as I have. Every contribution is valuable! :) And if you don't submit something, and you're someone I think is worth remembering, I'll just have to do it for you ;)

I really hope we can create a lasting record of the community here. :)

I would add at the end of your description:

"As the third age ended he experienced a curious change of heart and began actively seeking out flaws in the film, beginning several threads with a distinctly negative spin. Thus proving that not even rosy glasses are forever."

;)

P.S. Quite an ambitious venture you have set for yourself, Iavas. Good luck with it! I'll be curious to see what you and others come up with for different people (including perhaps me, myself and i)

I'll contribute!

LadyAshley(surviving member):

Gender: Female
Joined: Jan 20, 2004

Age or age group when joined: over 18

Most well-known 'title': none

General stance on Jackson's LOTR: Mixed

Description: LadyAshley joined TORC of January 2005, and was of course welcomed kindly. She started off in M00bies, but hung around Books and Tom's House for a while, and finally moved back to M00bies but wandered to other forums when it pleased her. She didn't post too much, but she lurked every day, keeping her eyes open for anything interesting.
She was a purist, defender of all things canon in LOTR. However, she does understand why Peter Jackson and his crew did some of the things in the films. (Some things, though, are not acceptable even at this late date.) She read LOTR many many times in the three years following the release of the LOTR films. She once remarked that her room was plastered from head to toe with her LOTR daily-calender pictures. Whether or not the pictures will remain forever is yet to be seen.
Probably the most notable thing she seems to have done was to mention in Books how similar "The Horse and Rider" song from the book TTT is to an actual Anglo-Saxon song. That sparked her idea that, since there is an Annotated The Hobbit, why couldn't there be an online, Annotated LOTR? Then in turn inspired another poster by the name of ArPharazon to begin a TORC-made Annotated LOTR. She regularly visited the annotation pages and silently cheered them on, enjoying the tidbits of interesting information she found.

Awards: none

OOC: if this sounds pompous in any way, someone can feel free to write a bio for me. :) And Voronwe, your bio will be very interesting. They'll have to make a sub-bio for each of your alter-egos!

V, I may just have to add that :P So do you want to nominate someone else to do your profile? Or are you the only one able to explain the name changes? ;)

LadyA, thanks! That's just the kind of thing I'm wanting. :) It's not pompous at all, don't worry. By the way, I changed my profile from a third person description to first person, I'm not sure if you'd prefer to do the same?

hal, are you going to write your own profile? I think you should, lest someone else misrepresent you ;)

I'll write it, but it will have to be later today or tomorrow...

I think the Third Person voice works better, that way if someone compiles a list of all the ones written, you won't have to keep track of who wrote what....

Plus, if some are written by others (as, say TLE's would probably be), it would get confusing to have some in first and some in third person...

Iavas, this is a fabulous, fabulous idea. :) Especially with the movies being over (alas), it will be nice to have a record of the history of the forum.

I'm quite interested to see what everyone says about themselves. It's always neat to see how people see themselves versus what we would say about them.

Really glad you like the idea, Ber and Maiden :) I can foresee that it will take a lot of work, but I'm prepared to do it.

hal, I think a mix of first person and third person will work fine if I include who is writing the description. For instance, I've added "written by himself" to mine. It should then be clear if someone has written their own description, or if not, who has written it for them.

Okay...

TragicNiniel (Surviving Member)

Gender: Female
Joined: June 2003
Age or Age Group when joined: 21
Most well known 'Title': TN (I think that counts)
General Stance on PJ's LOTR: Mixed, generally positive.

Description: Um...I'm stealing a statement from SamwiseGamgee, "Largely ignored, probably because [she] didn't post very much. Or he just never fit in." Probably the latter for me, I have trouble fitting in everywhere I go, but have come to accept my mediocre-ness. :D Usually posts in threads not too rife with contreversy however there are a few exceptions. A notoriously bad or phonetic speller. ;) Mostly likes to lurk which is probably why after over a year of being here almost everyday I have yet to attain Ranger status. I'm here for at least an hour everyday, posts from work. Writes ALOT in the Vampire Chronicles thread in Books (Other) which recently has found itself in a state of slow death. Very frequent visitor to Manwe though I've only posted there, I dunno, like, once. Very vocal about how I came to Tolkien, after seeing the Fellowship of the Ring on DVD in '02. Found this site on accident when I typed in theonering.com instead of theonering.net. Lurked for around 2 months before joining. Big supporter of the movies being used to introduce Tolkien's books to other people. Has read The Silmarillion, LOTR, Unfinished Tales & The Hobbit. Looks up to V and Iavas as her TORC heros. ::blush:: Tends to start threads that have some new ideas but they never seem to last very long, my longest thread was one ing Movies (Other) called "Clean Films, Okay?" that clocked in at just under 2 pages. All and all enjoys her time spent at TORC and would not trade my experience here for the world. Though I am, like I said, largly ignored by many I consider you all like my big extended internet family and I love every one of you. :drink: (Posesses two Tolkien related tatoos on various parts of my body :P :P)

I'm a little uncomfortable with writing about myself so, I did my best. If it's too long winded or whatever just let me know. :)

I was thinking maybe we should all add something then compile it into one paragraph. He's had an impact on so many people here and he was so well known it's only fair that everyone get to say how he affected them or how they saw him, good or bad.

On the other hand that might take too long, or require a seperate thread in and of itself but it was just an idea.

I was thinking maybe we should all add something then compile it into one paragraph. He's had an impact on so many people here and he was so well known it's only fair that everyone get to say how he affected them or how they saw him, good or bad.

Is Lidless no longer with us?! In what sense, please!

Uhhhh... he kinda got banned in December, though one could say he is still here in spirit.

Thank you for clarifying. People were speaking with such finality, I thought he might have passed away.

I'll probably get in trouble for saying this, but I firmly believe that he'll be back here again some day.

Lidless got banned?

Why am I not surprised?

He was funny, though. I don't recall 'meeting' someone with such wit outside of a TV show or a film. :)

Ok...what tense do we officially want, Iavas? First or third? (And thanks, Iavas. One saying they inspired something might be considered arrogant in some circles.)

Most well-known "title": None
General stance on Jackson's LotR: Mixed but positive

Description: (written by himself)

Joined around the time of the RotK TE release after lurking sporadically and posting at tolkien-movies.com. Occasionally posts in Books or Other Movies, but primarily in Movies. Minor Purist gadfly possibly best known for his disappointment over the omission of Denethor's palantir, even though his least favorite aspect of the films was actually the omission of the VoS from the TE. Formerly had bad habit of becoming overly emotional and making stupidly negative posts which he had to retract afterwards. Believes he is now better at avoiding that. In January 2005 saw all three TEs on three consecutive days at local arthouse theater and has since had far more positive attitude toward the films' omissions and changes from the book; has not yet had time to discuss this experience on the board. Also posts on the LotR RPG board at decipher.com, and has written several reviews (some Tolkien-related) at amazon.com.

Awards: none
