Anyone know of any online games?

Postby The Nightwalker » Fri Dec 31, 2010 4:37 pm

Anyone out there know of any online games that keep with the LOTR/ Middle-Earth style? I know that there is LOTRO but is there anything y'all know of besides that?

To be honest, I haven't seen any that follow what I would call a LOTR/Middle Earth style, other than LOTRO. I played WOW for 6 years and quit over a year ago. Rift is a WOW clone and I'm told well done. I've heard good things about Guild Wars 2, but I've only played Guild Wars 1 and didn't like it.

guild wars 2 will be quite different from the first.
it's supposed to be pretty amazing, as they've done quite a bit with it that other mmo-rpg's have not. i'm pretty excited for it myself!!
until then, i've been playing LOTRO.
allods is pretty good too for a free online game.

Star Wars the Old Republic is the MMO based on the old RPG's Knights of the Old Republic series..
It's the first MMO that I've played (although my son used to have a Runescape account and I played that a little). It's held my interest so far. A couple of caveats though. One; it has a $15 a month subscription fee and Two; a lot of the servers are so thinly populated it's hard to get enough people together to do some of the group missions. I understand that at some point they are going to allow people to move characters to other servers though.

If you want to avoid a subscription fee I understand from chatter on the SWTOR site, that GW2 is going to be free.

Hmm...

I could suggest MU Online, Guild Wars or AION.

They are all based on fantasy and some monsters from MU are even based on Uruk-hai and orcs from the LOTR films.

MU Online is quite fun but takes a while to get strong and equal with the top guys.

The obviously place is Lord of the Rings Online.

It's free to play, but much of the later game is behind a pay-wall. Still, you can have some good fun role-playing with people at the mid-levels. If you want to play, and want to RP, make sure you choose a server that ends in "-RE" (Roleplaying Emphasis) or "-RP" (Roleplaying), where most of the good RP happens. Some of the other servers don't RP at all. I've got a character on Landroval-RE and Laurelin-RP. The former is by far the more active, but the time of encounters I have with players on Laurelin are usually better.

Beware of snobs who've never read Tolkien, but will scour wikipedia to find some reason why there's a problem with your chara's back story.

Elendor and Elessar, both Lord of the Rings themed online role-playing!

They are focused on story-writing and imaginative character and plot creation rather than graphics or hack-n-slash. Really, the premier places to interact with Tolkien fans and scholars alike.

Elendor is set in the third age, before the War of the Ring, and Elessar is set in the Fourth, afterwards. Check them both out!

We be rolling in DDO. We had some good times in Ultima Online, but that is only as LOTR as you make it.

But you aren't necessarily just looking for MMO's. Using Steam you can find games that are fun online more so than their single player version:
Dungeun Defenders is fun co-op.
Magicka is a hoot, but it is very distantly related to the Tolkien Fantasy.

I know this is an old game, but has anyone played Lord of the Rings: War in the North? If so, what did you think? I feel like I really missed out since the game was only out for 13 months before the game servers got shut down.

I find it strange that with so many fans, they don't have another multiplayer online game out there. What is the reason? Is LOR not giving out rights for games to be made?

Or am I ignorant and there is something else like it out there? If so, what are they using serverwise? And are they free from the legal constraints that shut down LOR: War in the North?
