We've moved the D&D sessions to our place now, which is kind of funny when you realize that all the other players live in the same city half an hour from here. But the deciding factor is the handicapped player, who's getting too wobbly to make it up stairs any more, and we live on the first floor. I suppose now that the DM has her materials on a laptop now (rather than depending on some 20 books) we can play anywhere, so we could probably play at the nursing home just as well; but that would leave us out of the supper thing unless we just didn't plan on eating together (the resident could get his meals there but we couldn't, and I doubt if we could bring food in, I don't know). But it makes me happy because I really don't like coming home after dark on the highway every Sunday, and I like chilling out at home the day before going back to work. And it did give us incentive to keep our dining room clear! :D

We play at my house, too. :D
And for the same reason as you, Morwenna, I prefer it that way.
I do not see well on the roads after dark.
Not to mentions we've been playing at my house for so many years
It would be very strange to play it somewhere else.

This Friday, the 25th, we will be going out to find the fifth dome of Achleyon.
I have the the people all rolled up and ready to go, monsters, too.

Will also put out a bit of a spread for a bit of a Halloween party for my crew.
Nachos anyone? :D

May your 20's never turn on you.

Later...

I love D&D, though I haven't played much at all since I had to move. :(

I play 3.5 edition, in the Dragonlance universe and usually end up DMing.
Though when I'm not DMing, I usually play a Black Robed magic user named Isilwen Shadewind.

Welcome to the thread, Isilwen_Inglorin!

I've never played 3.5 and from what I understand,
It is quite different from 1e that I play.

Too bad you don't get to play much since your move.

Last Friday, we took our low levels out on their training adventure.
Their masters are always near, but for the most part, they make the decisions.
The party came upon a small farming village
Where they learned Goblins had attacked and stole two babies and a young woman.
They traced them to their cave and fought them and worgs, too.

Next week we'll be taking out our high levels.

Happy gaming.

*bump*

Whoa, it's been awhile since I've posted here.

This coming Friday, June 20th, I'll be leading 3-4 level characters out of a dungeon crawl.
We opened up the game as captives and they made their way out of their cells
And into a cavern and tunnels.

They started out with the clothes on their backs
And have scrounged up armor and weapons as they progressed.
Hopefully this session will lead them to the outdoors
Then they'll have to make their way home.

May your 20's always roll true.

Re: Dungeons and Dragons Anyone?

We kind of went into hiatus early in the summer when the husband of the DM couple went into the hospital. He had cardiac surgery.
Then after he was home, otherwise doing fine, he fell, got a concussion, shattered his femur, ended up back in the hospital.
Took him forever to be ready for rehab, because of the concussion. So he went to rehab--then started going downhill fast, and ended up back in the hospital.
Evidently they missed something about the concussion because his organs started failing, and he died during the last week of September.
So now his widow wants to get the sessions going again (she needs the outside human contacts!), but she's still in the midst of digging out a lot of her husband's stuff, and of course a lot depends on the availability of the other players. We weren't available till yesterday, when one of the others wasn't available, so we went over anyway and helped her sort stuff and just chat with her.
It's going to be very VERY weird without him, though, because he was such a sparkplug for us, a leader when everyone was going off half-cocked, a reminder of cagey things we could do to succeed. In D&D and in board games, he & my husband made fun adversaries for each other.

*Sigh...*

My condolences, Morwenna.

It will be different not playing with him,
But it might help his widow get back to a sort of normalcy if she played.
Give her a hug for me.

We FINALLY had a D&D session!! It took this long for everyone to get their acts together. The widow didn't DM this time; the youngest player (who's done this before) did. And we got to play lower-level characters for a change; it'll be good to get us thinking around corners when we don't have our late friend to talk us through things. (Don't get me wrong; all these people have plenty of experience! But no one really knows how to work together! Well, they do, but they often don't want to.) Hubby says he'll probably end up being party leader from now on.

The widow said there were a couple options for finishing up the thing our higher-level people were in the midst of: either it would be too easy, or too hard (and we'd all die). My suggestion was, Something Happened and we all escaped with what we had, without actually finishing the plot, and we're free to go back to where we came from.

And our late friend's 3 main characters originally came in from another world, so it's now stipulated that they went back to their home world. With all their special tools, of course (earned over many years' play). His newer, minor characters will just have wandered off to wherever, and good luck to them.

(We are going to miss that chime of opening, and that dimension mirror!)

I'm happy you finally got to play.
I like your suggestion that something happened. (the hand of God mayhaps?) and you all escaped.
I think that would be the best way to end that story line.
Hey, now you can work your lower level characters up to that Chime of Opening and the Dimension Mirror!

We play again on the 19th of Decemaber.
We'll be playing high levels this time.
My High Priest of Poseidon, Owen, lost a level and he wants it back. :x
So, he's going out with my Arch Mage, Darius, and Darius' steel, Baron.
Don't know anything more than that, but it's going to be fun.

May your 20's always roll right.

The DM for this adventure said that this one was geared to about 2nd level characters; the widow and the other guy decided to roll up new characters, hubby had a 3rd level he could bring, and I had a 1st level (everyone else I had was 4th and above), so I was told to just boost her up to the minimum for 2nd level. Despite having played at least twice before, she was still 1st level because of being multiclass (she's a half-elven druid/ranger specialty priest of Mielikki, which is in the 2nd Edition Forgotten Realms materials). She had to prevent her fellow party members from acing the bears in their den who weren't bothering anybody! :D It was going to be a one-shot, but by the time the new characters were rolled up and everything, we got about halfway through this scenario and had to time-stop, and continue in 2 weeks (this next weekend we're going to a science fiction convention in Maryland).

I like starting my characters out at a low level and building them up.
Most of my characters are 4-7th levels.
The high levels we're running this time were made to fill out a city/family.

Good job by your Druid, btw.

Have fun at the con.
I haven't been to one in ages.

We usually go to about 4 or 5 cons a year, though most of them are closer to home than that. This is one where our friend runs the 1st edition scenarios, but I'm usually too busy doing other things to play. Sometimes hubby joins them, often not. It's not the company, it's the timing! :D

We had such a high-level one going before because our late friend wanted to gain something important for one of his high-level characters, so the rest of us had to be up to the task! I hope we get to use some of our mid-levels soon; there are a couple of them that I really want to advance. Right now my highest-level character is my newest!

This Friday we will have our Christmas gathering and gaming night.
We bring real food instead of munchies and exchange gifts
Then run a game.
My bff, Simply Sable, will be DM'ing
And I'll be running with my High Priest, Arch Mage, and a top level fighter.
Hey, there's only three of us and one is the DM, so running more than one character is the norm.

Re: Dungeons and Dragons Anyone?

Postby Morwenna » Tue Dec 16, 2014 12:16 pm

In our friend's 1st Edition game, we often ran more than one. I ran two from the beginning. Sometimes in our current one, we run more than one, usually someone covering for a person who is DMing for a time but started a character in that adventure. Sometimes one of us has to run an NPC along with our own so the DM can concentrate on everything else. It's been awhile since I've run 2 at a time, but I wouldn't mind doing it again.

This past Sunday we finally finished up the adventure we started in November, and next week we'll probably start something new, with the same guy as DM. He's enjoying himself! And so is the widow, who really does like to play; she was the main DM for years. We'll still be running our lower-level characters for awhile, which is fine. But since there are only 4 players plus DM now, it strikes me that if we ever start running higher-level things again, a couple of us will probably have to start running two at a time.

Whether we have festivities next week, I don't know. The hosts usually gave us all gifts, and hubby would give everyone baked goods. But I don't know what'll happen this time. I certainly don't expect anything from the widow; she has enough on her plate right now.

Last week we had some mid-level characters take out rookies for training.
My poor first level thief kept breaking her picks in locks
And nearly blowing herself and the party to heck and back by nearly missing traps.
There were a few times when she got it right though.
Which means my dice rolled right.

It was fun though.

Wow! Lucky you survived all that!

We haven't played since December. Schedules have been weird, the weather hasn't cooperated either, and now the problem is what to do about our handicapped player. It's looking more and more like having to play at the nursing home, but that will botch up supper arrangements. I doubt if we can bring outside food in, and we who don't live there can't eat their food. (He doesn't want to either! He does all the time!) But how will we deal with this? The alternative is going back to our place, if the other guy's car is up to it; sometimes it isn't. And she doesn't drive.

Morwenna, check with the Nurse or Administration at the nursing home.
You should be able to bring in outside food.
If the player is on a certain diet, (diabetic, etc.)
She/he should be able to give you a list of things he can't eat.
Does he share a room?
If so, see if you can reserve a place to play.
Now if this place is run by a religious group, you might want to make sure the game is ok to play there.

I worked in assisted living for years.
Usually, they allow residents to have guests over for the evening
As long as you respect their rules and the other residents.

There are several lounges; we'd set up in one of them. We'll just have to ask about the food. It would be great if we could continue to have our pizza!

As evidenced above we can talk old D&D (and New D&D) Stories and events like a bunch of dwarves or hobbits at the pub.

The tales of Trolls, Dark Elves, Dragons, Epic Evil.

I launched my D&D exploits from a campaign my father put together. He'd been playing since the original rule set. I started at Advanced Dungeuns and Dragons (1st Edition), moved to 2nd edition shortly thereafter, and played that until College and picked up 3.5 during those years. I have moved to Pathfinder just recently. My favorite class is a dual class human fighter/mage with at least 7 levels of fighter and 8 levels of mage. IMO a player character can't get much more powerful than that in 2nd Edition. It was awesome to toss a haste spell dual wielding gaining "Buzzsaw" status for a few rounds. Unfortunately, when you are that epic, you end up in a bunch of magic dead zones, or fighting beholders...neither is fun, rolling a Save Versus Death almost every round is does not make for a very light-hearted adventure..

One of my favorite moments was when the Dwarf in our party jumped down from a parapet onto an Undead Beholder, Grabbed two eyes at random and pointed them down at the beholder. They activated and one was luckily the disintigrate ray... resulting in the sudden disappearance of the beholder he was standing on. The dwarf fell the remaining 30 feet to the ground.

Welcome to TORC and the thread, Jolly_Roger!

I only play AD&D 1st Edition.
I don't consider myself an edition snob,
I just don't play the other editions is all.
I do use the "Build A Thief" section in 2e, though.

Love how the Dwarf took out the Beholder.

Hope you drop by as often as possible to let us know how your game is going.

We haven't played for a while due to illnesses and other scheduling differences
But hopefully we'll get back to it on May 1st.
I'm currently DM'ing the game
And taking the players through a mine that is having trouble with monsters.
Kind of hard to mine gems when your workers have become lunch for a monster.

May your 20's always roll your way.

That is one where one imagination is far less restricted by game mechanics, and the world is as open as the player's and DM's imaginations.
Still, I like the mechanics changes for v3.5 and Pathfinder to be more "realistic." The rules are not too onerous, and they typically help things to move forward relatively quickly.

Sounds like a fun adventure, unravel the mystery.
Could it be a Rift entering into the Abyss? Or an evil necromancer commanding an Aerial Servant? Nah, it is nothing of the sort... It is far more sinister, like a pair of kobolds with polymorph self potions.
May your adventurers only "almost" die during their investigation.

Those who play my Campaigns often refer to my large orange d20 as the "DM's Dice of Doom" for its ability to roll a 20 every time the stakes are down. =:)
Sadly it has been almost a year since I have been able to be part of a Campaign. Hopefully, I'll get something going in the next few months.

My dice of Doom tends to be my own! :D

A small group of us played the starter adventure, "The Mines of Phandelver", in 5th edition D&D. We've finished it last session, and we're going on to the next adventure, "Princes of the Apocalypse". We're level 4 now (I think we'll be levelling up shortly): the party consists of a halfing rogue (me), a human fighter, a dwarf cleric, and an elf wizard (we started using the starter characters rather than our own, but I think we've all grown fond of our characters). Once we managed to survive the first skirmish as level 1 characters, we got on quite well (although it does turn out that our cleric had misinterpreted the rules and healed us a little too often  ). I do like the 5th edition in that there's less dependence on stats. (Having said that, I've not really played any of the other editions, but our DM has and he's impressed with 5th edition.)

We had some luck in that I killed a necromancer by rolling a 20 on a sneak attack. :D And we were very unlucky when meeting a dragon - I kept missing, so we ended up having to run away. I'm looking forward to playing my little plucky halfling again. :D

We're also going to be doing the main adventure, "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" later on with a larger group, where I'll be playing an elf ranger, who I intend to multi-class as a rogue. Fingers crossed she survives level 1. :D

Welcome to the thread, heliona! :hihi:

I've heard 5th edition was the closest to AD&D 1e than all the others.
Have fun, heliona... and I like plucky.... Plucky is good. :D

Well, here's the yearly BUMP! :D

How's everyone's game going?
Ours is going well.
We started out on our new quest last Friday.
I'll be DM'ing and taking the players all over the continent
The "prize" is a gem that can be used to read spell books remotely.
(got the idea from another D&D site,DragonsFoot)
The Mage who wants it is offering up to 6 million gold for the gem and the notes that go with it.
There are many rumors as to where both items can be
But no solid leads.

I hope I can pull this off.
Wish me luck.

Good Luck Calma! It is an interesting thing to start off a Campaign and to keep one going... will the storyline be fun enough? Will everyone have fun and enjoy their characters and your world?

Sounds like a great backdrop for Adventure! I am about to get the next installment of a Pathfinder (I pretend it is D&D because it basically is 3.5) adventure involving a world with geography similar to Faerun but with outside powers similar to Lovecraftian Ancient Ones moving their attention to that world... The first installment they found the means for thwarting the Domination of the world by the first Old One... using the fabric of the magic of their world. The second installment will be dealing with the second... the Destroyer. As a DM (or GM) you never know exactly where this will take them, but I expect they will find a way off a sinking dimension before it is too late, hopefully they take enough with them to survive in whatever world the can escape to. Pretty sure they will not have the means to stop the destroyer in time, but hey they could make the attempt, IF they want.

Should be fun... but you never know.

Sounds like a rough game, JR.
Hope your players have fun
And you have fun running it.

My players are currently checking out the first rumor
And looking about the foot hills outside of Middlebrook.
They met up with a hermit who invited them to use his cave for the night
Then was gone when they woke up.
As they were looking about the area
An avalanche happened and three of the six are buried beneath it.

Bump...

How's everyone's game going?
Hope all are having fun. :D

I'm still running the quest to find the gem.
Characters are now on Long Isle looking for more notes
And have found a gem.
But is it the real one..... :evilaugh:

Hobbituk and I did our first co-DM session a few weeks ago. We did a standalone adventure, just to see whether it would work. I did all the admin for combat, and handled ambient noises, whilst Hobbituk did the story (and made up a lot of stuff when our adventurers kept missing things!). I contributed to his story occasionally, and it worked really well. This means that we'll be co-DMing the week-long session next year. It is going to consist of a series of mini-campaigns set around a longer campaign that will wrap up by the end of the week. Right now we're partaking in a long campaign that's been running for a couple of years, and it does get a bit confusing sometimes!

We're also involved in another campaign where there are just three of us playing (each playing two characters). Every session it is a new adventure, but we're using the same characters, so it's basically their lives. Our DM for that one has ideas for the next seven (!) adventures, which I think will involve some of our characters' backstories and motivations, which should be good.

So that's where we are at the moment. :)
