From games based in Middle-earth, to the latest MMORPG, first person shooter, or strategy game, come on in and talk about the games you play!

Having played both games i prefer ADOM because of its depth and good character creation system. Also i found Angband very hard to get in to and found my self flipping back to ADOM. But HEY angband has a big advantage for me, its set in middle earth. What do u guys think?

u can download the games from:-
Adom - http://www.adom.de
Angband - http://thangorodrim.angband.org

I've recently played ADOM, and I dislike its character-generator. ANGBAND has a very thorough generator with variations. Also, I like what graphics it has more than ADOMs. I just think ADOM has an inferior role-playing engine (I can say this because I put one together!): for instance, there's a difference between an Archer and Warrior.

But I guess ANGBAND's best characteristic is its Tolkien-ish quality. For instance, after awhile you might be so lucky as to pick up the Phial of Galadriel!

Has anyone here beaten Angband? I have yet too. After my character get to like level 40 I get bored with, and I start over. I have lost my waking hour to this game. I remember when we first discovered Moria my buddy and I would take shifts on the computer playing, staying up all night! Addictive......

I've Played NET-HACK and it's better ADOM and were successively impressed with both. After getting used to the very simple keyboard characters used for graphics, I was very impressed with the playability and immercivness of the games. The amount of commands you could give your character to get it to sit, scribe, pray, read, scratch, talk and so on and Adom with it's skill selection, race, selection on top of class selection, plus a background story. Skills can be improved with pratice and points given at each level advancement.
I beleive to have played a early version of ANGBAND or MORIA ads was disappointed, despite the programmers attempt to use state of the art graphics. It just ddin't seem right and I went back to playing ADOM.

ADOM is the best rogue-lika games I have ever played.
ADOM has a good plot, good character creation, good world and all what is in that world. So I could say, that ADOM is almost perfect! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Angband sucks big time, but the fact that it's in middle-earth makes it almost playable. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

NEt-Hack...well not so good as ADOM, but better than Angband.

I like Angband, though I'm very bad player. It's very addictive. And you don't really need graphics. And there isn't really very many games for mac that I can afford.
I played through it allright... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

My dark elf ranger was bad to the bone (favored by his god!).

The animated forest is easy pickings if you just put on Coward-tactic mode and run through it. NEVER ATTACK, ESPECIALLY WITH FIRE!

The pyramid is also a good place to visit, some bad dudes in there, but also an artifact (Ankh-amulet, defensive powers). Beware though, the entrance will be sealed when you reach XP-lvl 16! A good idea is to camp in the wild outside the pyramid and enter when you have nearly enough XP-points for the 16th level. Holy water will come in handy... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Okay, right, here comes...

I´ve been playing Angband for couple of days now and I must say I like the system. Bigger levels are always welcome and although the inventory-control could have been done better, I like Angband.

BUT!

I don´t like the fact that it has only one specific goal. Kill Morgoth. Right...
I like quests (although some might be hard or take time) believe it or not, and in ADOM it also felt like you were actually travelling in a world. In Angband it´s just like "Infinite Dungeons" all over again!

ADOM offers much more variety and after careful consideration I have decided... (watch out Angband lovers, here come blasphemy!)
... to take it off my harddrive.

Back to ADOM and the "Iron-man" challenge! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Here is an column from the official ADOM-site:

"The Ironman challenge has very simple rules and is very, very difficult to complete. The PC must travel from the starting point in the Drakalor Chain to the Infinite Dungeon immediately. Stopping in Terinyo or anywhere else is not allowed. Wilderness encounters on the way to the infinite dungeon are allowed in principle, although ideally they should not occur.

The PC enters the Infinite Dungeon immediately upon arriving at the
appropriate wilderness square. The PC must descend to the next level of the Infinite Dungeon every time a down staircase is found. No delay is allowed for any reason.

The objective is to retrieve the Sceptre of Chaos from the SIL, return to the surface and leave the Drakalor Chain. It is not necessary to kill MaLaKaI to do this, although in practice it may be unavoidable.

This challenge game has been successfully completed perhaps a half-dozen times by various players."
Both games have their devout followers, I am definitely in the ADOM G-16 camp... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I´m not saying that Angband is that much worse, it´s just that I like ADOM better. Besides, I´ve been playing it for so long that starting all over again with Angband made me wanna cry... *weep* <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Themedes:

No, I haven't forsaken ADOM yet...and I think I'll never forsake it.
I have couple of characters going on...let me chack...*opening ADOM*...high-elven elementalist and drakish paladin, yep...nothing good, but something. Sometimes you have to try something else to keep your self interested...usually I play with a dark-elven ranger or fighter...you could say that's my favourite.

Yep, dark-elf ranger gets real good starting abilities and skills.
At the moment though, I´m running the Ironman-challenge with a grey-elf ranger. All my skills are real close to hundred now (ranger level 16).

Huu...bad a**!

I just got my good dark-elven ranger killed...it was on our another computer, so I didn't list it before...it had to scimitars: another +3 and another a normal, but still I did pretty much damage: Two weapon combat: 100, sword skill: I don't remember, but it was good, because I usually raise my combat skills by killing heaps of jackals in the plains on the right side of the river.

My drakish paladin got killed by a lightning-lizard...darn thing...I was invible(cloak of invisibility) and therefor hungy and I had to eat during combat(I put the coward tactics on), but I had less HP, that I thought I had and BANG! Dead.

I started a new game as a dark-elven ranger. But played only for 5 minutes.

My current attributes for the new character are:

STRENGTH 19
LEARNING 25
WISDOM 14
DEXTERITY 22
TOUGHNESS 17
CHARISMA 9
APPEARANCE 22
MANA 21
PERCEPTION 25

He´s lawful good (plus).
16th level grey-elf ranger.
Sign of the book horoscope.
Wields normally one orcish dagger (+3, 2d4+5) and a wooden shield (+2, +6,+2).
Weapon levels are real good (atleast skilled level in ALL weapons, Mastery in daggers and UnArmed).

He´s not scary yet, but he´s good enough. Wait ´til I hit the deeper levels of the Caerns of Chaos...
I´ll do some serious damage after that! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Okay, I just got the Khelavaster quest and heading up to the surface now. I´m going to pickup that wand of fireballs from Thrundarr (living forest quest completed!) and head off to the pyramid (closes if I get to exp.level 17, I´m currently on 16). Those mummys sure hate fire... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>

My stats have increased recently, since I found some potions and ate a few stone giant bodies (Strength is at 21 now...).

As for those skills:
Smithing at 37
Woodcraft at 48
Haggling at 44
Literacy at 78
And all other basic skills of a grey-elf ranger at 100

Hacked and slashed through the pyramid. It was ridiculously easy.
Rehetep fell on my first arrow (blessed +5, 1d8 of undead slaying!) and the rest were easy pickings.
HO HO HO! Now I have an Ankh! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I still haven´t found the helm of waterbreathing or a second ring of fish (I have one), so I can´t yet compete the "Find WaterDragon Blup´s Mom" -quest.
We´ll see...

I had the most incredible luck BTW. The second time I drank from a pool it granted me a wish! (hint: Amulet of Life Saving is a good choice!)
