Magic: The Gathering

From games based in Middle-earth, to the latest MMORPG, first person shooter, or strategy game, come on in and talk about the games you play!

I've been playing Magic now for a few years, and almost all of my friends play. In fact it was Magic that introduced me to LoTR (or rather the people I play with). I was just curious, is there anyone else out there who plays? There are alot of similar elements between the two, and it's obvious that the card game was heavily influenced by the works of Tolkien.

I am aware that there is a Middle Earth CCG, but it's not very popular, the cards are hard to come by, and almost nobody else plays, but I've started creating LoTR theme decks in Magic by eliminating all the cards that don't exist in Tolkien's universe.

That still leaves me with plenty of material to work with, with vast collections of elves, goblins, dragons, wizards, eagles, human soldiers, and dwarfs to choose from...and my favorite, the powerful Ent-inspired treefolk cards.

So how about it. Anyone else play, or be willing to exchange theme deck lists?

I used to play mtg, but that was about 6 years ago. I have the one ring, bilbo, frodo, 4 nazguls, 5 dwarven rings, and 2 elven rings in the Middle Earth card game though. I havent even looked at anyof my cards in 3 years. I guess that makes them pretty old (and possibly valuable)

Yep, I played Magic: The Gathering for years, and I am now stuck looking for opponents - where did all the wizards go?

I also did the Tolkien theme deck - I had one based around the Lord of the Rings, with an Aladdin's Ring as the One Ring, 9 Shadow creature for the Nazgul, a Glasses of Urza for the Eye of Sauron, etc. It was a great deck - not too powerful, but tons of fun to play. Actually, it was published in a long-ago issue of the Duelist. You will have to go all the way back to the first issue that covered Stronghold - the one with Volrath on the front against a green background. Look for the Theme Weavers section and you'll find me.

It's great to be back!
Very cool deck, Radagast.

Yes, I must admit I played too. Nothing too competitive, just with friends. Started when the Mirage expansion came out and stopped buying cards actively just after the first parody expansion came out (can't remember what it was called, it was fun). I liked building decks more than actually playing, and really liked themes (even if they weren't powerful decks).

I always wanted to do a Middle Earth themed unglued deck (the parody expansion you're talking about, Jen), but none of the cards really work too well. Although, the "Knights of the Hokey Pokey" and other such cards worked really well in my "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" themed deck.

Oh, and by the way, Anriel can completely thrash me any time she likes.

I have no time to play it right now. My friend competed at the MTG World tournament in Long Beach, CA, USA. last February. He only reached the semis and got eliminated. He said some people are making a lot of money playing it.

Interesting thought, book, but I have a question. You said, "We need to get a game started here. I have tried to get people to do it before but no one goes along." Exactly what are you talking about/how do you mean?

You would play with each other over the MB in a thread. You would have to go by the honor code, no stacking, looking at cards, shuffling your deck during a game (unless the card you just played/used specifies to do that). Then post whatever you do. When you're done, end your post and it's the next person's turn. This would get a little tricky with multiple players. Instead of going clockwise, you would have to predetermine who goes when...

hmm, just for kicks I could pull out my old deck. I dont know how compatible the old cards are with the new ones, though. I stopped playing at about mirage, started during third edition/dark.

I see. Yes that would get really confusing, but I think we might be able to pull it off. It would prob'ly be best to construct something small, maybe, like a thirty card deck so that it wouldn't be as difficult to keep track of for as long. The entire deck list should be posted before the game, and both players should know what all of their opponents cards do. From there on in, I'm a pretty honest person, so I know I'm not gonna' cheat. If you're really serious about trying this out, book, then let's go ahead and put together a couple of really small decks, huh?

Star- you can buy magic cards pretty much at any comic book store or book store. I've seen 'em in different stores all over the place, you just have to know what you're looking for. You can also order them online... for more information, check out http://www.wizards.com/magic .

And as for Anriel..., I'm not usually a boring person, but if I have to be...hee, hee, hee...

I disagree about changing/posting complete card lists. All you have to do is list what the card does when you play it. It's too powerful if you know your opponents theme before beginning. If they forget you have something, which happens all the time when playing face to face, it's their fault.

Heck, I've been playing since late 1994! Anyone remember Fallen Empires?! Back when I started, you could play with 4 Forks and 4 Balances in a deck, and nobody complained. Now, nobody even knows what a Balance or a Fork is... sigh... well, that's what you would expect from a 3000+ year old wizard. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Anyone playing Magic in the Baltimore-Washington area? I searched for Magic in Anne Arundel county, and I couldn't find ANYTHING?! If this lack of gaming keeps up, my brain cells are gonna to start dying from boredom!

Alrighty then, book. If you wanna' play it without knowing what other cards there are, that can still work, I'm just worried someone might try to cheat by adding different cards to their deck depending on how the game's going.

Still, I like the idea of trying a game on the messageboards, and I'm sticking to my maximum of thirty cards in a deck limit if I'm playing...at least until we find out how the whole thing's gonna' work.

How about you, Radagast? I'm sure we could do a multiplayer game with a little organization. It'd be great to play with someone who remembers the old cards. (I myself didn't start until mirage/4th edition...however, I've spent alot of time going back and finding out as much as I can about the old school magic stuff; me and a few friends now set up games where we can only play up to certain early expansion cards (though these games can get expensive).

Radagast, I remember fork and Balance. Great cards. I also remember the "Power 9" cards. I'm still p***ed that they don't allow Mind Twist anymore.
BTW, I started about the same time as you did. I live just south of DC. I am happy to get together anytime.

Vlheid, I agree there is a certain amount of trust we will have to instill in each other. The honor code will have to be initiated. I, for one, am a gamer. I hate cheating and anyone that does it. I will not cheat.

Hehehehe... Mindtwist... When I first started playing, I thought that card was useless - all it does is make your opponent discard most of his hand. Isn't direct damage the way to win?! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Ah, how much I've learned since then!

Channel-Fireball, anyone?

<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

(Sure, I'd love to try a multi-player online game. How do we do it?)
Oh come one ragdagast, everyone knows the only way to win is to stock your deck with the biggest creatueres that cost the most to play <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Of course, I never really got to find out if it was good or not cause I was usually dead before I got my first one out. whats better than an 8/8 trample swamp thing? (if no one knows what Im talking about, Im leaving this thread)

Alrighty then, book. I'd like to organize a game here, but since it was your idea first, I'll give you the choice first of organizing it yourself. Or, we can both set it up, however you want, but I really am curious to see just how this works out.

Vlheid!!!!!!

I too still enjoy playing Magic and have bought the Encyclopedia(glorified Apprentice!) To play Online,do you have this????
I just play Type 2 now as it keeps things fresh and can slow the game
down if it gets too fast: like Saga block which I will sorely miss,
I hate 1st turn kills and people "going off" in my face and not getting to draw a single card,Bargain anyone?
I used to play the old Microprose Online game on Ten which was cool and how I learned to play in fact!I like Blue best but not just because of counter I like combos and have a pretty solid Avatar/Exhume
deck which gets me about 70\% of my wins It`s black/blue :
1st turn Island=Trickster Mage
2nd turn Swamp, discard Avatar woe,Morphling,Masticore, or Tidal Kraken
to untap Island=Exhume
Or Unmask yourself Dark Ritual Exhume

I prefer the former<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
