Dragon Age, fantasy RPG from the creators of Baldur's Gate

Postby Nár » Thu Sep 25, 2008 3:29 am

The game, developed by Bioware (Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Planescape Torment, Knights of the Old Republic) will be called "Dragon Age: Origins", and it has been described as the "spiritual successor" to the Baldur's Gate series. It will be feature an epic story in a dark fantasy world with many possible party members and moral choices with important consequences on the whole world.

It should come out at the beginning of 2009.

Looking forward to this game for a while now although the two trailer movies i saw were far from exciting.

Screenshots and some previews made me excited about this game though. It seems to use indeed the same gameplay system as Baldurs gate with many subquests and different plots depending on your choices in the game.

Just about the graphics i am not impressed yet.

You know, Maeglin, for me graphics (especially in a RPG) don't really matter. If they made another game as good as BG 2, even with the same graphics it had 10 years ago, I'd buy it right now! ;)

Bumping this to say that the more I learn about this game, the more it sounds like a new Baldur's Gate / Knights of the old republic.

Nar, very valid point, any game with the same graphics and gameplay as BG2 i would buy again in an instant.

It is just that bioware does not impress me much with their character models (NWN 2 really was a let down)so i am a tad worried about that.

Still looking forward to the game although i heard it was delayed by a few months. :(

And I'm buying it ASAP. ;)

The only disappointment for me is that it doesn't seem to offer as much freedom as BG in terms of character creation (only three races and three classes - albeit each class has three-four possible "specializations").

Everything else I've read about it sounds extremely promising, from the interactions with the other party members to the depth of the storyline, from the moral choices to the length. And the "origins" feature sounds intriguing - your character has to choose among several possible backgrounds, with a playable prologue whose events will influence the rest of the game.

Anyway, it's Bioware. At the very least, it will be a good game.

So, has anyone played this yet?
If so, what are your opinions on it?
Did it live up to your expectations?

I've gone to the site and watched the trailers and read the back of the box in the game store and while it does look intriguing and fun, I would like to know your thoughts on it before I decide to purchase it.

Thanks.

I was just looking to get this game.

I'm surprised no one here has talked about Mass Effect. It was developed by Bioware, and it's one of the best RPG's I've ever played. In fact, I've just gotten into playing it again, trying to get all the achievements before Mass Effect 2 comes out in January.

I'll probably end up getting Dragon Age for the winter break.

Same here ;) I would have bought it sooner, but I need a new PC ...
The good news is that critical reception is definitely positive. I've read many reviews and threads, and the most common criticism seems to be that the game appears to be heavily unbalanced in favour of wizards and against rogues.

Re: Mass Effect

I thought the main storyline was sheer brilliance, but the sidequests were (mostly) boring and repetitive. Mass Effect 2 looks utterly fabulous though.

Dragon age is since bg2 in this genre defenitly the best RPG.

I played it through once and immediatly started with another character. Me and my girlfriend are both addicted.

I have hardly any complaints about this game except maybe the ingame movies are not as nice as i would have liked.

The unbalance was hardly noticable on the normal level, it is just not a very easy game but with the provided patch it works likes a charm.

And the downloadable content is just awesome. I haven't been this excited about a game since ages. :)

This is an excellent game, worth 2 play throughs at least and doing all the origins stories. If this is a warm up for Mass Effect 2, god help me I might actually buy a game on release day for full price.

And how is that a bad thing? ;)

For the record:

1) BioWare has officially announced Dragon Age 2 for March 2011. Apparently, the story will follow a completely new character, although the world in which he lives will be influenced by the choices made by the player in Origins and Awakening if one chooses to import a saved game. There won't be origins this time, the character can only be a human, the game will feature full voice acting for the main character and a dialogue wheel - in short, it will be more like Mass Effect. Personally, I'm not overly enthusiastic about some of this - as much as I liked Mass Effect 1&2, I enjoyed DAO more, even if it was less slick, cinematic and polished.

Anyway, BioWare is my favourite software house and in many years it has disappointed me only with the original campaign of NWN, so I'm optimistic.

2) A patch has been released for Dragon Age Awakening, which was quite buggy before that. Now, I'm having no troubles at all with it.

I really liked Dragon Age-Origins,it has a fantastic storyline,
awesome characters,a great soundtrack and everything... :)
but I do not think it can ever replace Baldurs Gate, because that
game WAS PURE ART!!!
...too bad they dont make games like that anymore... :cry2:
by the way,the DAO expansion Awakening was nice, but too short...
they should have made it a lot longer... :|

You run around a city, find someones lost goblet in one of 4 identical caves, then talk to someone in hops that they will sleep with you.

Needless to say Bioware dissapointed me, at least it is the only time they have.

Auch :(

What about the combat system, in the demo that was very action orientated, with a whole different camera angle, and to me it looked like all the monsters had a lot more hitpoints.

Same in the real game?

Yep. It's much more an action game then 1. The combat is decent, not really much special though.

Well wait for the price to drop. If I didn't pay $60 for it I wouldn't have been so let down.

Get it for less then $30 and you got a deal

Weakest Bio game since Jade Empire, and their third worst after NWN OC and JE. Not bad, though; 7/10. (DAO was a 9/10 for me). Quips about "Dragon Effect" were quite on target : it has been streamlined, has a dialogue wheel ( with a paragon-like choice, a renegade-like choice and a new "sarcastic" choice replacing the neutral one) and voice acting for the main character, is more action-oriented, it has no origins (you are a fixed character, a human called Hawke, although you get to choose sex and appearance). I enjoy Mass Effect - I actually liked ME2 as much as DAO - but it seems they've taken the worst features from it.

Companions are interesting and likeable and the main reason I am quite forgiving; overall, it's a fun game, albeit RPG mechanics have been simplified too much to appeal to a wider audience. It was also nice to get cameos from DAO characters, although I read some players -not me - had trouble with the game recognizing the consequences of their imported saves from DAO. Worst bits are the re-used maps and small world. Combat is criminally easy on "Normal"; the first time I died I was 6 hours into the game.

It was the single weakest Bioware game for me.

However I am incredibly excited for Mass Effect 3, more so then perhaps any game in history (surpassing Red Dead Redemption even for me) so if it delivers............I can forgive all their past wrongs. :D

Again, DA2 was better then a lot of games out, but should have been so much more.

How this post has aged.

Mass Effect 3 made me never want to buy another thing Bioware makes ever again. Unless DA3 gets 10/10 scores across the board and has a 99% metacritic score.

I played Dragon Age for a while and I liked it. One thing that bugged me was how slow the combat was, but it didn't really get to me until after I took a break from the game and came back to it. I can't even finish it now. Disappointing.
