80's music

Any fans of 80's music? I like several groups and singers like Cyndi Lauper, Bon Jovi, and Journey.

John Mellanchamp continues to be a fave of mine. 8)

Though I like much of their music from the 80's I tend to like Journey's music from the late 70's. :)
I feel the same with another group who was huge in the early 80's (REO Speedwagon).

nah, to be fair, I was kind of a fan of the Talking Heads....and The Clash, sort of. I categorically deny ever listening to or owning anything by Echo & the Bunnymen.

80's music is still my favourite - I grew up with it, and have very fond memories about listening to the new tunes on the radio (and recording them on cassettes, oh those were the days). There most certainly were excellent singers, groups and songs during that decade. I'm thinking Depeche Mode, U2, Eurithmics, Madness, The Cure, New Order, Simply Red, Simple Minds, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Talk Talk, UB40, Sisters of Mercy, ... I could go on. And on a more local level, Front 242, TC Matic, ... :)

Hey Kaya

You mentioned The Smiths

I remember when a girl ( Amber ) I met introduced me to their music.

I remember this song in particular...Girlfriend in a Coma.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=j5b_V68mQ9k

She introduced me to quite a lot of "dark" music. She was what I consider now..a goth chic. I am glad I met her and thank her.

She also introduced me to "The Lords of Acid". I am not sure if they were during the 80s. I just remember she introduced me to their music and that I liked it.

I well remember the first time I heard "Rough Sex". I just don't remember the decade. Probably the 80s.

Hello FT, glad I got you diggin' in the past. :D There were some gems in that era, for sure. The Smiths made great music - the one you mentioned, and many more like 'bigmouth strikes again', 'how soon is now', 'there is a light that never goes out' ...

Lords of Acid (a Belgian group, btw :D ) were, if memory serves me right, late eighties and so on. It's not my style of music - I prefered Praga Khan ('breakfast in Vegas', 'power of the flower'), another group by one of the main members - but again, I think they started no sooner than the late 80's, and became better known during the 90's.

More 80's memories: Pet Shop Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams (run to you, cuts like a knife, heaven, somebody, summer of '69, ...), Duran Duran, Level 42, A-ha, T'Pau ('heart and soul'), The Police, Hall & Oates, Men at Work ('down under'), Bananarama, The Bangles, Tracy Chapman, The Communards, ...

There was one band that was just plain "fun". They did not take themselves too serious and put out some real fun tunes for parties, etc.

Huey Lewis and the News. 8)

There is a whole genre of 80's music that hasn't been mentioned.

In the 80's the country scene did a dramatic change, songs (many anyway) got much more soulful, rock-a-billy sort. Steered away from the dog, pick up, beer songs.

Travis Tritt

Marty Stewart

Lori Morgan

The Judds

Alan Jackson

and

Vince Gill

Just to name a few.

I'm glad to see some of my favorites got mentioned. I think I saw someone mention The Eurythmics, The Cars, the Talking Heads and Men Down Under. I was also fond of some of the metal groups: Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Sammy Hagar and Ozzy Osborn come to mind. There were also couple of hard rocking gals that I liked --Joan Jett and Pat Benetar. Stevie Ray Vaughan was tearing it up. Miss his music a lot. Then there were some 70s groups that were still going strong in the 80s. Jefferson Airplane was Jefferson Starship in the 80s, and they were still rockin' hard. Aerosmith had some big hits in the 80s. You couldn't turn on the radio for 30 minutes without hearing something from Fleetwood Mac. Steve Miller was still turning out hits.

Come to think of it, there was lots of good music in the 80s. I just wasn't fond of the 80s layered sound like Depeche Mode, U2 and Tears for Fears.

I almost forgot Dire Straits. I still listen to a lot of them today. Let's not forget that the 80s were completely owned by Michael Jackson. I actually really like the Thriller album.
