Puff (the Magic Dragon)

Postby Cock-Robin » Sat Jan 24, 2015 11:17 pm

One of my favorite songs is Puff (the Magic Dragon) by Peter, Paul and Mary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu_rItLPTXc

However, the way the song ends always depresses me. I get the feeling PPM didn't really like the way it ended either, as when they perform it, they end the chorus in the present tense.

Just last night, I I got an inspiration for another verse to the song, and would like to share it with you:

Yet in the midst of sorrow,
Puff got a big surprise.
A little girl with golden curl
And wonder in her eyes.

And so for our good dragon
The story starts anew;
Fresh adventures begin
With brand new friends,
Who knows? One might be you!

And then the chorus, now in the present tense.

What do you think? Does this verse complete the song? I wish I could get in touch with Peter Yarrow to see what he thinks of it. From what I've read, there IS a lost verse to the song where Puff finds a new friend, but the two authors can't remember what it is.

I kind of like it. I remember hearing an additional verse some years ago too, but I don't know whose it was, maybe even Yarrow's for all I know.

I'm with you, CR, it did need a new ending...the ending was always so sad. I loved it when I was a child too...in fact, I still sing it sometimes, to myself.

I like your ending. I think you should submit it...somewhere. I don't know where, though.

What Iris said. It is not in my top five, or even top twenty, favorite songs precisely because of the sad ending. Life is sad enough, who needs sad songs?

Cock-Robin, Peter Yarrow is on Facebook. Admittedly, the page is probably handled by someone else, but it would be one way to contact him.
"And it is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance else that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen."

There is something profound about standing AT sea level.

Yeah me neither. But that new verse would change the entire song, making it happy. Also I think the verse is pretty good.

Actually, I went on Peter Yarrow's Facebook page, but I can't enter anything there. It seems closed to contact. So I'm still not sure how to contact him.

He might have a personal webpage or you might be able to find his agent...

Ah, here we go! Peter Yarrow

If nothing else, you can say it is a complement to his excellent writing skills that you felt so inspired. I think it was the first song for me where I could actually see the characters and understand the story...long before I saw the cartoon. :)

I always felt like the sad ending placed it solidly in the realm of classic folk songs. So many of them are so sad. When I was a little kid my mother would sing so many super sad songs to me at night. So many folk songs have sad endings that it seemed natural that Puff's story would be sad too.

That being said, I like the idea of an additional verse. Makes it a little happier, and Puff needs a happy ending.
