I was just checking out My Dying Bride's newest album. Pretty damn good, I must say. I love doom.

I like MDB's music a lot, but the guys voice is kinda froggy. Maybe I will get a few tracks and see.

Yeah, his voice is kind of froggy, but I think I like it like that.

I saw an interview with MDB a few years back. I was impressed that they did not try and put on a big act like some bands (Slipknot!). They insisted that just because their music is kinda dark and gloomy they do not sit around in black capes drinking dark wines on oaken thrones. A bit of a dig at Cradle of Filth there I suppose. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Well, that is the way to go, really. A few years down the road when I have my Doom band, that's what how we're gonna be. No need for that fancy schmancy crap.

Why would there be corpse paint in a doom band?

I have been listening to a lot of Amon Amarth lately, they are wicked. Good old fashioned death metal with lots of viking worship thrown in. I have been missing a good hard-riffing band, they remind me a bit of Edge of Sanity crossed with Jester Race era In Flames. Maybe a bit of Karelian Isthmus era Amorphis thrown in. Real power DM. Unfortunately those who stand guard at "The Mighty Doors of the Speargod's Hall" do not wear corpse-paint. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Carnivore, Peter Steele's old band right? Never actually heard them. I think I heard somewhere that their sound was similar to early Type O, like Origin of the Feces style, thrashier...not too sure though. They don't still put out albums do they?

I always preferred Stainless Steel to Black Metal. You can shine it and you cannot beat a well made sink! Add a bit of Cif and bye bye germs and grime!

Whats the difference between Black Metal and Death Metal?

So Im just a very old metal fan who moved on, my hearing started to go you see! Was into the classics; Iron Maiden, Metallica, Whitesnake, AC/DC, The Melvins! Best metal ever is Wagner!

Of course the Deftones are not metal, I own Deftone albums, more like nu-punk or a progression on Soundgarden.

Amon Amarth? Can-amarth likes that. What's amon again? Hill? Elevated spot? Goodness, the things you forget...

I believe amon means hill. Amarth means doom doesn't it.

In my experience, and I better be careful here or BlackGoat will tear me a new one for wrongly describing the genres <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>, Death Metal has deep growled vocals, sometimes more yelled, compared to the typical shrieks of black metal

BM-often contains melodic elements, keyboards etc, for a more textured feel.
DM-seldom has these elements, concentrating on guitar riffs

BM-often is a lot faster than most death metal, which will only hyperblast in short bursts, BM often will sustain an insanely fast drum tempo

To really simplify, although it is not strictly true, the best BM bands are Norwegian and the best DM bands are Swedish.

There is also a difference in emphasis. DM tends to be very heavy in their riffs, the guitars dominate the sound and the vocals often (if it is good DM) compliment the guitars for a more intrumental effect. Brutality is the ultimate aim. Song structures tend to be simple and songs short, 3-4 minutes.

BM, because it is usually faster, is drum dominated as this drives the song along and the vocals tend to go more with the drums, not fast mind you, no one can sing as fast as the hyperblast, but in time with them. BM tends to have longer songs that move from several different melodies in minature movements. SOng structures tend to be much more complex both in overall structure and in the instrumentalization.

ALong with all that, there are of course always exceptions to every rule and much variance within both genres.

I am sure BlackGoat will somehow correct most of what I said, or perhaps refine some of it but in my experience everything above is true. But I have only listened to black metal for a few months.

Maybe some bands for reference, most DM bands I know are from the early 90s though.

Death Metal: Entombed, Edge of Sanity, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Morbid Angel, In Flames, (early) Amorphis, Bolt Thrower, Amon Amarth, Dismember.

Black Metal: Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, Mayhem, Cradle of Filth (some may disagree on this...BlackGoat!), Borknagar.

Hey BlackGoat: Have you heard Zyklon (feat. Samoth and Trym)? How would you classify them? I would say DM.

Okay, I pretty much agree with your analogies, except that I think the best DM comes from USA in Florida <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

I don't think CoF is black metal anymore, they were pretty much until after Dusk...And Her Embrace. I consider them a more all around metal band now.

Yeah, I've heard Zyklon, I've got their debut, World Ov Worms. I would classify them as death metal too, with a small touch of BM style riffs thrown in there. If you like Zyklon, you'll like Myrkskog as well. They like started almost the same time as Zyklon, sound a hell of a lot like Zyklon, and even Destructhor from Zyklon is a guitarist in the band. They're also on Candlelight with Zyklon too.

Yeah, Carnivore was Peter Steele's band before Type O. They were a lot like Type O's first album, Slow, Deep & Hard except a bit more thrashy. Their second album was a bit more hardcore, but still metal. They don't put out albums anymore, they disbanded around 1987-1988. Road Runner did reissue both albums though at the beginning of this year.

back in the day I used to listen a lot of Florida DM, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation etc. That was a long time ago, then I discovered Amorphis and never really went back to the old classics until recently, and it is more of a novelty now...to listen to the stuff I did 8-10 yrs ago.

well, well...metal...hmmm...Igot a problem and maybe you guys can help...you all seem terribly keen on catalogising (I bet that isn't even English, but hey, who cares)...

Where would you guys place Dreadful Shadows...they're gothic, but not that gothic...sound a bit like Oktober Rust by Typ-O-Negative, but faster...and better (although that's my humble opinion)...were on the CD "Death is just the beginning IV" with one o they're best songs called "Chains"...(my all time favourite is "Mortal Hope")

so where would you guys put them???

(and yeah Val, Wagner surely IS metal)

I have never heard Dreadful Shadows....

German metal...the only good german band I have heard is Blind Guardian. Most of the others were kinda wussy...splitting the difference between accoustic alterna-rock and metal.

"Denmark, no Scandinavia..ahhh Sweden" --cryptic quote found in the liner notes of the Entombed CLANDESTINE album. (the best DM cd ever)
