Rose: He has the whole regalia, at three levels of formality: very dressy, daytime and casual. He also has a good supply of snappy answers when people ask him what he wears under the kilt! Our son and daughter-in-law had a Scottish wedding.

Years ago, we went to an event at the Beverly Hilton, as it was then, in Scottish dress, and the people in USA formal were turning heads like mad to look.

See if you can find a Burns Dinner. They should be later this month. Search "Burns Dinner" and your town. You will have as many bagpipes and kilts as will hold you for the rest of the year!

On the topic:

I do NOT like "Celtic Woman." That group seems to me to be too plastic, too manufactured. I also do not like "Celtic Thunder" for much the same reason.

Anna Russell, an inimitable music-commedienne called folk music "the uncouth vocal utterance of the people." I guess I like Celtic music that is more like that.

I love the Celtic sound; I probably should call it the Gaelic sound, since it seems most in evidence in Irish and Scottish music. (Well, I love folk music anyway, traditional or modern.) And I'm also quite fond of Middle Eastern music. And in recent years I've discovered I'm far from being the only one! Most people I know who like one form like the other as well.

And I've come to the conclusion that it's the modes. It's also why I'm so fond of the blues. Anything but a plain major scale!! :D

And I swoon over bagpipes; I always have. I remember one year my parents and I were at a major fair and a Scots piper wandered through playing, and I turned off to follow him automatically, leaving my parents standing there sharply calling my name!

Great Big Sea has a new tour schedule. If you've not heard this band, you should check them out. They are among my favorites! And they put on the best concert I've ever seen. :)

Here's an old song (quite traditional Celtic sound):

Mary-Mac

(Okay, the video is weird. :| )

And here's my favorite song (I think!):

Sea of No Cares

Wicked Tinker was here for our Scottish Highland Games back in 04' that was when I first heard them play. It was free at the games to hear them play and we just love them so we bought one of their CDs.

I recently bought a CD by Mychael Danna and love it. It is A Celtic Tale "The Legend of Deirdre" I so enjoy listening to it when I go to sleep at night.

The bagpipes stir my blood as well. I love each late Spring and early Summer when they come to the Scottish Highland Games and we can hear them playing 150 strong. Oh what a sound!!! The first games will be in Bellingham the weekend I am out of town I believe but then in July the second weekend we will be going to the games and listening to some new talent as well as the pipe and drum bands. So much to enjoy!! Then in August if we can go there to another games on Whidbey Island. So we actually get three localized chances to go and listen to the pipes and drums.

The Wicked Tinkers are funny, and very good musicians. They accurately describe their music as Celtic Tribal music.

Has anybody heard of Eluveitie? They are a Celtic Folk Metal band from Switzerland. Majority of the music is sung in Gaulish.

They are melodic death metal, with Celtic theme, and with folk metal.

I have all their digital collection and own two CDs. If you want to borrow them (Death to those who lose them  ) I shall give them to Ryan. :)

My love for Celtic music stems from me being part Irish.

Few things stir my blood the way bagpipes do!

Aye, I know the feeling! I kinda feel sorry for people what hate the sound of bagpipes.

The song "Mary-Mac" would be very good to have people sing, on the highway, as a sobriety test. It is hard enough, cold sober.

"Sir" Harry Lauder recorded my favorite version. I have tried to find a video of him doing anything at all, online. So far, nothing. A still picture or two, but no moving pictures.

See what I mean about it being used as a sobriety test?

I think I had heard of Great Bg Sea, but I had never seen or heard them.

Ok here are some Celtic Metal you all may like.

Cruachan This band is from Ireland. They are a bit more traditional Celtic Irish style. For example Flogging Molly but a bit more heavier. Also they are also Tolkien fans as well.

This discussion made me realize I didn't know--couldn't understand--all the lyrics to "Mary Mac." So, here is the traditional version:

There's a nice wee lass and her name's Mary Mac
Make no mistake, she's the miss I'm going to take
There's a lot of other chaps that would get up on her track
But I'm thinking that they'd have to get up early.

Chorus
Mary Mac's father's making Mary Mac marry me
My father's making me marry Mary Mac
And I'm going to marry Mary
To get married and take care of me
We'll all be making merry when I marry Mary Mac

Now this wee lass she has a lot of brass
She has a lot of gas and her father thinks I'm class
So I'd be a silly ass to let the matter pass
Her father thinks she suits me fairly

Chorus...

Now Mary and her Mither gain an awful lot together
In fact you never see the one or the one without the other
And the fellows often wonder if it's Mary or her mither
Or the both of them together that I'm courtin'

Chorus...

Now the wedding day's on Wednesday and everything's arranged
Her name will soon be changed to mine unless her mind be changed
And we're making the arrangements and I'm just a bit deranged
For marriage is an awful undertakin'

Chorus...

It's sure to be a grand affair and grander than a fair
There's going to be a coach and pair for every couple there
We'll dine upon the finest fare I'm sure to get my share
If I don't we'll all be very much mistaken

Chorus...

Practice saying that at speed.

:D Definitely a challenge!

It seems like Great Big Sea has altered the lyrics in several places (or at least used an alternate version). I think it's a big naughtier, really.

There's a neat little lass and her name is Mari Mac
Make no mistake, she's the girl I'm gonna track
Lot of other fellahs try to get her on her back
But I'm thinking that they'll have to get up early

Mari Mac's mother's making Mari Mac marry me
My mother's making me marry Mari Mac
Well I'm going to marry Mari for when Mari's taking care of me
We'll all be feeling merry when I marry Mari Mac

Now Mari and her mother are an awful lot together
In fact, you hardly see the one without the other
And people often wonder if it's Mari or her mother
Or both of them together I am courting

(Chorus)

Well up among the heather in the hills of Benifee
Well I had a bonnie lass sitting on me knee
A bumble bee stung me right above me knee
Up among the heather in the hills of Benifee

(Chorus)

Well I said, "Wee bonnie lassie, where you going to spend the day?"
She said, "Among the heather in the hills of Benifee
Where all the boys and girls are making out so free
Up among the heather in the hills of Benifee."

(Chorus)

The wedding's on Wednesday, everything's arranged
Soon her name will be changed to mine unless her mind is changed
And making the arrangements, I'm feeling quite deranged
Marriage is an awful undertaking

(Chorus)

Sure to be a grand affair, grander than a fair
Going to be a fork and plate for every man that's there
And I'll be a bundle if I don't get my share
If I don't, we'll be very much mistaken

(Chorus)

There's a neat little lass and her name is Mari Mac
Make no mistake, she's the girl I'm gonna track
Lot of other fellahs try to get up on her back
I'm thinking that they'll have to get up early

(Chorus)
