JOIN US! Book pass IS ON! (Magician and Mrs. Quent)

Postby Wildwood » Thu Dec 17, 2009 8:41 am

(In case you're wondering, I have just changed this post to fit better with what we are up to!)

History: I bought a book called The Magicians and Mrs. Quent. Forget the author's name. Cool book, sort of SciFi/Fantasy meets Jane Austen and Brontes. Not an instant classic, but a decent read, and there is another one coming out this year. So it occurred to me that it would be fun to actually pass this book around among ourselves, via snail mail, to share!

At present, the book is on its way to Tookish_Traveler, who will read it and then pass it along to Jewelsong. We're making notes in the book, or tucking them into it, before we send it on. We aim to have a ton of fun with this, and some hijinx has already ensued, between me and the post office! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I may just go find another one to start through the chain. We could make this very very cool, I do believe! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Here is where we stand right now:

Wow! this was actually a decent little read! :D:D:D It took a while to get off the ground. More than half the book still felt like it was setting the story up, but the pay off was pretty good, at the end. Plus, there is a promise of another one coming out in 2010. I feel interested enough to look forward to that, so it must be ok, right?

Gotta get in touch with Diamond, though, and see if she'd like to read it and then pass it along. No bites yet....lonely little fish in the big big pond!

You might have to give Di a nudge by e-mail or on lj, I don't think she peeks in here a lot these days. :D

I like the idea of the book pass, though there's the risk of the book getting lost in the mail. I was nervous already last time I passed on a greeting card. Still, esp with the idea of leaving notes, it sounds great. Would make it particularly interesting to get it really late on its round. :D :D :D

Tooks, I believe I will take you up on that! Drop me an email with your address in it, and I'll send it on.

I was fixed on Diamond as the first recipient, but that's really because she has always been an especially good friend to me, here on the board. but I think she may like it even better if it arrives to her, eventually, with lots of comments from others in it.

What we really need is a list of people who want to get in on it. TrueHobbit - I think we need you on the list. I will dare the mail. And if it gets lost, then I'll go get another copy and try again! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

As it arrives to each person, perhaps he/she could make copies of the notes, thus far, so as to be able to keep that part of it, while still sending the book and the original notes forward to the next recipient. I think this sounds like fun! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

It has to be at least as much fun as that traveling gnome that got nabbed from somebody's garden, and dragged over half the globe, with pictures being taken everywhere and sent back to the original address, right?
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I really did like the book. The first part felt very Jane Austen to me. Plus - the author did something I like, in that he did not dumb down the alternate reality elements. There are special words that apply to days and nights, for instance, but he didn't take time to explain it. He let the contextual meanings come through, as the story moved forward. Love that! It's great when an author trusts his readers to have enough intelligence to suss these things our for themselves.

The second part felt very Bronte to me! Equal parts Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.

The end was pure fantasy, though, and very satisfying to me. I think you would like it. I am happy there is a sequel coming sometime this year.

Right - so get me the address and we'll get this thing moving, shall we??
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

True, do you want to be in on this as well? Let's be brave hobbitssesses and dare the mail to do its worst! I know where the bookstore is! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I do hope some more people will take you up on this - I agree it sounds like fun. :D :D :D

And we're off! :D:D:D:D:D

Just waiting for Tooks' address, adn we can get going. Jewel, would love to have you in on it!

I remember hearing about that gnome prank on CNN years ago. Made me laugh out loud! What a clever idea! Even the people from whom it was taken couldn't hold a grudge once the postcards started rolling in. What sort of mind came up with it in the first place, though? Clever!

Happy hobbitsesses! This is gonna be fun. spread the word! And I will add you to the list!

Thanks for the links, Jewel. :)
Hehe, I did have a brief image of the gnome in "Amelie" when I heard the story, but I didn't think it was actually related (been a long time I saw the movie, too :) ). :D

Good, three people is a start. I'm sure more will join in. :D

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, Tookish! I've had one heck of a new year. Why must January always be so difficult? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Threw my back out. Wanna know how? Wasn't shoveling snow. Wasn't moving furniture. Wasn't picking up my 2 year old grandson. NOPE...it was something really difficult and strenuous. I was.......DRYING MY HAIR!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

That's right. Lifted my hairdryer up to my hair, felt a nasty spasm, and off to the ER we went. Lost two days to a muscle-relaxer induced coma, and am trying to get over it now.

And we've had a ton of snow. I hate snow. Resent it! It should move off to Hobbiton where folks appreciate a bit of snow! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

anyhow - no harm sharing the addy on this thread. I thought my addy would be public on my profile, but I must have done it wrong. Go figure!

Can I get in on that too? I would love to do this sort of thing. And I am good at not dropping the ball, and keeping this sort of thing moving on to the next person.

So the book is on the way to you Tooks? And then heading overseas? Germany, then England. And then back to the US after either JewelSong or Di reads it?

This should be SO much fun. :D

Wildwood. :( I am so sorry to read of your accident. Glad you are better and don't do that again!!

Sign me up. I love the idea of comments or cards or such in the book for others to see what a journey the little book made. Excellent fun.

ACK....and the saga continues....restrained my back thursday, and missed even more work. Ugh.

anyhow - planning to go to the post office this afternoon! So the book will be winging its way toward you soon. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I was thinking...you know how you can mention the name of a book you've read, and someone pipes up and says "I've read that book too"? Well, once this adventure is off and running, we can say it and truly mean THAT book! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

YUMMY! That would cheer up a wet cat! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Ok - so on to the package saga, for saga it is becoming! :D:D:D:D:D

I wanted to mail the book out to you yesterday, but ...surprise surprise...it was a federal holiday. Post office closed! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

So went to try again today, and forgot to take your address with me! No problem, thought I. I will just check my email on my handy dandy smart phone, and get it that way. BUT I couldn't get a signal.

So then I figured, no big deal, I'll just have them weigh the package, once I got it all sealed up, and put the postage on it, and then I'll toss it into the first obliging mailbox I pass, right?

EXCEPT...it weights about half an ounce too much for a regular mail box. I HAVE to drop it in at the post office. Only way to go. Plus - the postage depends on where it was going. I said "PA". Apparently that was too vague. So I told her to pick the farthest away place in PA from where we are, and put that on there.

Of course, we couldn't use the automatic stamper thingy. We had to have actual stamps! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

So I have it here, in my office, stamped and ready to go. But I have to drop it back by the post office - when someone is there to receive it from me. So I'll drop it by there tomorrow lunch time! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I swear...I could complicate breathing! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D It's already fun! I have a story! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

This already too much fun! I started a list on the original post that shows the order that the book should go. You can check there to see to whom it should next be sent. (If that's ok??) :D:D:D:D:D:D

Just want to keep some semblance of order and fairness, just in case we get a lot of folks wanting to join us. So far, it's just the four of us, so its not that big of a deal. Hopefully we'll get more though...

I am about 3/4 done. It is an entertaining read, unfortunately I don't have as much reading time as I would like.

*sigh*

Anyhoo... I hope to finish it up in a few days. Don't want to give away any spoilers for future readers, but I think you'll enjoy it. :D:D:D:D:D
