Boy, you've opened the floodgates here! You're probably going to get half the posts telling you they're great and the other half saying they're trash.

But in my humble opinion they are definately worth the time to read them. McCaffrey has a real talent for writing characters that you come to care about. When a couple of characters die together (whose names I won't reveal), one in the series from the very beginning and the other only in that later novel, I wept for them both. And the series concept is very good.

However, the series is uneven, so that while most of them are worth rereading again and again, a few will probably not be reread again. One irritating quirk is that while she seeks a lot of advice on technical matters and on the whole handles them well, in same instances you will have to reread them a few times to get them clear in your mind, she will still make a simple blooper that will have you shaking your head. For example, in the latest book, "The Skies of Pern", she writes of a planet ROTATING around its sun rather than REVOLVING. Sometimes it seems as if her editors get a bit lazy.

Still, I'm always eager to read the newest book when I see it on the library shelf. I just read the latest last week.
