portia, what did you think of "Dragon Harper"? I have it and haven't started it yet. It smacks of "Moreta" though.

Did anyone like the Crystal Singer books? Or The Ship Who........., books?

I can't separate "Dragon Harper" in my memory. It is possible that I haven't read it.

I LOVE "The Ship who. . . " series.

Hey Portia. I have to see what the new book is as well. I did read Dragon Harper, it is good. But it seems that now there are rehashing of some of the old story lines. I like the idea of expanding characters into books, like AM did with Moreta or built on F'lessan with Skies of Pern.

And "The Ship Who....." series was WAY fun to read. I think there were like five of them. Someday I will have to dig them out and re-read them.

I must admit that I found "Dragon Girl" boring. It was long and didn't seem to me to go anywhere. Half the length, however, would not have given it a plot.

Here is a list of "The Ship Who" books and related:

The Ship Who Sang
The Ship Who Searched
The Ship Who Won
The Ship Who Saved Worlds
PartnerShip
BrainShips
The City Who Fought

There might even be more. From the co-author with AM.

portia. I didn't read Dragon Girl. Maybe I will give it a pass.

On a recent long car trip, I listened to "Dolphins of Pern" on disk. I liked it, and I think it would be good as a regular printed book.

The Dolphins of Pern is one of my favorite books. Very sweet.

I am half through Dragonheart by Anne and Todd McCaffrey. I am liking it very much actually. Still a rehash of old story line (Moreta) but in a different time. This one is set just before the 3rd fall. (before the main story line and before Moreta).

Re: Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series

Postby siddharth » Fri Jul 05, 2013 10:22 am

First of all, thanks rwhen. On your suggestion I started the series. And I LOVE it!!!!!! :D

I have only read dragonquest and dragonflight and about to start The White Dragon. And honestly, I can't recall reading anything as beautiful as this since Tolkien!

The first phase was a bit difficult to get by. It was vague of what things were going on for the first 4 or 5 chapters. And the style and rythm was a bit different and took time to warm up. But once Lessa becomes the Weyrwoman, the plot and the set-up unravels beautifully!
And I like dragonquest even more than the previous one. OF course, more science so more happy! :D But all the characters are so lively and the socio-political structure of the world REALLY well-planned and well-explored.

In short, Dragonriders is definitely on my top 20 best novels list and on my top 5 best fantasy series, second only to the Middle-earth series.

And I hear there's gonna be a movie soon! So excited!

I will soon start The White Dragon. From what I read in book 2, he's gonna be quiet a lovely character. And I'm suspicious about Ruth.

P.S.: R.I.P. Dragonlady Anne McCaffrey. :rose: One of the best female writers. you deserve all the awards you got.

Sid. I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you found the books and are reading them. Another one hooked. Easy to do really. I will miss Anne McCaffrey for a very long time I think.

The White Dragon. Do not be suspicious of Ruth, he is THE white dragon. And you will come to absolutely love him. After that, read All The Weyrs of Pern...those four round out the first of the Dragon Riders series.

Let us know what you think of The White Dragon. :D

sid, I read the first 3 books, (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon) in four days.
Then as I found the others it took me about a day and a half to read them.
Totally love the series and I know you will, too.

Postby rwhen » Thu Jul 11, 2013 10:48 am

I will have to check, but I remember waiting for the books to be published....meaning like the last two of the first four. If that makes any sense. They are an easy read, but so good you can't put them down. Once I read the whole series starting with The Dawn of Pern...right up through The Masterharper of Pern. Then? Turned around and read them again. To me they are that great.

Calma, I remember that you were/are also a McCaffrey fan. Do you have a favorite of all 21/22 books of hers that are in the Pern set? I THINK mine IS The White Dragon, it has so much involved in it, rather than just Jaxom and Ruth. Then again, Canth and F'nor....they are really special and anytime the Master Harper shows up, you know there is going to be good reading. I get muddle headed just thinking about them all. Maybe it is time for me to take a trip to Pern again, it has been a good while since I have read them.

Sid...keep it up, there is much more to come!! Surprising things. :D

Rwhen, how long did YOU take to finish it all?

Of the first two books I have read, I think I like the second more. Perhaps because somethings were so vague in the first half of dragonflight. But also, the plot is more complex and there are more surprises in the second. And, oh Fnor-Canth's voyage to the red-star is so exciting.
I plan to finish The White Dragon this weekend and hope so! Very soon there'll be no time for plenty-full reading.

I read Dragonflight and Dragonquest in the early 70's. The White Dragon (1979) wasn't published yet, so I was waiting for that and had to wait every year for new books to be published. So it took me as long as it has taken her to write them I suppose. And she was writing right up to her death. While Pern is my favorite of her books, I also love the Crystal Singer trilogy and the "Ship Who......" series. All by Mz. McCaffrey.

Yes...dear brave Canth and F'nor. The Harper Hall Trilogy goes much more in depth for that "ride". The Harper Hall Trilogy is set in the same time as the first four you are reading, but from the perspective of Master Robinton and Menolly. After the first four those should be next on your list I suppose. That would be Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums.

When you are finished with the first four....we can see from there.

For spoilers...at this point many of the books have been published now 40 years. Probably not too much to worry about there. ;)

rwhen, I don't know if I have a favorite of the series.
I love them all,
But when I think of the Master Harper...
I sigh and then I cry.
I just love that character sooo much.

I read somewhere that Ms. McCaffrey said that he wasn't supposed to be a main character
But he just kept putting his fingers in everything
And ended up being a very important part of the books.

Illiteracy is no excuse!!!

I have been reading McCaffrey since "Star Man's son" came out. It was in paper, so it was probably late 50s.
The Pern stories are, generally, better and "The ship who. . ." are maybe the best.

Calma, Master Robinton is also my very favorite of all the humans on or about Pern. Ruth is my favorite dragon of all the dragons. They both have made me cry and not on one occasion. Even when I re-read the books, I STILL CRY. Pfffffft. Ms. McCaffrey just wrote him awesome lines...How Lessa feels when he is having the heart attacks, how the dragons all won't let him go. I get a lump in the throat just thinking on it.

Sid. As you like. How are the books coming?

portia...I do really love "The Ship Who...." books, but The Crystal Singer had the first brawn and brain ship that I ever read and that is how I was introduced. The B & B in The Crystal Singer did make reference to Helva and that is what lead me to the books. But at the end of the day, my heart is still with Pern.

I did some research and SUPPOSEDLY last year a new writer went to work on the books to make them movies. But we have been teased so many times, it is hard to believe that it might actually happen. The longer they wait the better the CGI gets, which would only make the movies better. I think we already played the "who would they cast for what part" game. But it would be totally different ten years later.

This is nice...
Can't see the words sometimes, but nice still.

As for the movie...
Well, I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
It's been "in production" since God was a child
So, don't count on seeing it anytime soon.

Though with all the advances in CGI, it would be cool to see a Gold take to the sky.

When I first read the books, I pictured Mel Gibson as F'Lar
He's waaayyyyy to old now.

Hmmmm, maybe we should bug the poochies out of PJ to make them.

Calma, thank you. I hadn't seen/heard that before, but I see at the end it was written by Ms. McCaffrey. I like it very much.

For the movie....I think it will eventually get made. HUGE audience (maybe not a large as Tolkien fans) but still very large. This guy who has it now has no affiliation with the previous company in Canada. I think you are right and we are going to get our chains jerked yet again....but I am going to try and remain hopeful.

Hey if anyone is a song writer/lyricist I think there are some bucks to be made making songs for the movie.

Aw thanks Calma. I can't hear the song, my speakers are damaged. :( But the paintings are beautiful! :D

I'd really like to hear the opening song from the books in the movies!!! "Blower, piper ... "It's just ... epic.

Meadowforest, till what part did you read? I think I was having doubts about liking the books till I was halfway through Dragonflight. Everything was so, vague and the plot hazy. But after that the plot unfolded really nicely! I do think you should give another try! :D

Talking favorites?
Well, Ruth's the best dragon. But I also liked Mnementh from Dragonflight.

And for the characters.

Yeah, Robinton is really well-written. I was touched when the strife between Lessa and the Harper started, because of fire-lizards.
But I also like Jaxom. More relatable, for me, than any other character. F'lar was very good in Dragonflight. And so was Lessa.

BTW. Some confusion (and I may have been mistaken since I've read only once). But I remember Lessa being against Jaxom in the first book. She not liking him, to the extent of not even visiting him once. I think this was continued some way into book 2 as well.
And then when we finally see Jaxom and Lessa together halfway through book 2, she seems very affectionate of him. Mother-like.
Did I missed something or was it left on purpose?

True 'nuff. :D

Are they the kind of books where it is a really good thing to start with the FIRST book? I can't remember which book I had and I know it wasn't the first one. I read the second Harry Potter book before the first and found I could not get into it. Then I started properly and enjoyed the series greatly.
