101 Questions for Deathly Hallows Survey: CLOSING SOON!!!!

Postby TheWagner » Sun Mar 11, 2007 8:20 am

:eye:The 101 Most(?) Important Questions for Deathly Hallows:eye:
(and Possible Answers).

OK, folks, here it is! I am putting the instructions in this post, the main questions in the subsequent post. Note that there are some general demographic questions in at the end. My "answers" (responses, estimates, guesses, whatevers....) are in the 3rd post: that will show again the format for answering them Just follow that, and my computer (and it's person) will be happy.....

If it all seems to much, then post some of you answers initially. However, when you finish the survey, then please edit your initial post so that all of your responses are in one post!

If there are questions, send me a private message or post them on the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows discussion thread (whence this all started!). We want to go back to discussing the book there, however!

For those of you who were not following the prior thread, this set of questions and possible answers was put together by committee. Numerous people contributed to it. We have tried to allow for as many Harry Potter ideas as we can, even a few that none of the people putting together this survey buy. After all, our interest is, what are the general thoughts?

This also is going to be posted on one or two Harry Potter centric newsgroups. So, if you run into it elsewhere, then answer it only here or there. (I'm from Chicago, so I'm all about voting early and often: as in Chitown, it is an honors system!)

Here is the key to the color coding and any symbols, as well as how to provide answers.

Key:
  • Blue: "Chekovian" questions, where the books explicitly wave the questions in front of us or hinted at possible answers via clues or foreshadowing.
  • Violet: questions that arise naturally but not explicitly from the books.
  • Red: questions arising from Rowling's comments, interviews, web-page, etc.
  • Green: demographic questions that give an idea about the type of people who think particular things. (These do not count towards 101 total, so no wise donkey comments!). Do NOT check multiple answers there: instead, check the one that is "most" true or closest to being true if there is some question.

When answering:
  • for "MARK ALL THAT APPLY": do NOT contradict yourself!; those will be bounced.
  • &/ = and/or; that is, either or both might be true, but you think that at least one of them is.
  • to provide a single answer, type in one line (say) 1. b (number 1, period, space, 'b') to answer "b" for question 1.
  • to provide multiple answers, type in one line (say) 3. b c (number 3, period, space, 'b', space, 'b') to answer "b & c" for question 3.
  • if you are truly undecided on a question that does not allow for 2+ responses, then enter (say) "1. a/b" My program will read the '/' as an 'or' and tally this as half a vote for 'a' and half a vote for 'b.' Do not add any "or" or "either" or anything like that: '/' will suffice!
  • PLEASE DO NOT ADD COMMENTARIES! (I know how hard it is to resist, believe me; but it will make my life a LOT easier!) If you have comments, then by all means raise them on the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows thread! After all, good questions engender more questions! (Or so my old advisor once told me; that, and never bet on a pachyderm against an elf 8) ......)

I will post some now, and when I can I will edit to add more. I am basing these on what I hope, and what I think would make sense. I think and hope that a lot of the plot elements people worry about are red herrings.

Re: 101 (Most?) Important Questions for Deathly Hallows Surv

(Or so my old advisor once told me; that, and never take a wooden nickel from a house-elf......)

At the very least, save all your comments for the end. Thus, after filling in all the answers, add a coda that says "I really couldn't make up my mind for #x, and was caught between a and d...." or "I don't think any of the choices for #y are any good." Or something. But the  in the middle of the questions looks to be a nuisance for The Wagner, and we don't really want to make him angry, do we?

Also, keep in mind that no one knows what the heck you're talking about, because we'd have to go check which number you were on and what choice "c" was anyway. So the discussion will be....lousy.

(All this from someone who absolutely cannot take a multiple choice test without commenting, and generally wants to shoot the inventers of the Myers-Briggs test whenever I've taken it.)

Hobbi, please don't bounce this post to the ether - any off topic conversation can be diverted to the other thread, surely, but this kinda has to stay here!

Comments:
#4: I think that love will somehow provide Harry's Occlumency-substitute (choice d), but that more importantly, Harry has FRIENDS
#13 d has a typo - it should be "and is still there" But the real reason for Voldemort's interest in Hogwarts is that it is the only place he has ever considered to be home.
#47 RAB feels betrayed by LV, of that I am sure. I just don't know what form the betrayal took.
#52 - I just wanted my answer to be "nonsense" :)
#54 depends on timing - do they find RAB's notes before or after they get Dumbledore's advice from beyond the grave?
#56 - I think the Ring was Gryffindor's, so this object is narrowed down to something of Ravenclaw's.
#69 - I am not satisfied with these choices. I think we likely did not include the right answer here. Oh well.
#97 - I can't decide if the twins will have a shared fate, or if one of them will die. But I think they are the most poignantly expendable good guys, so they're doomed (or at least one of them is!)

Comments!
15: Should have thought of this before. The "brother wands" problem is going to force them to duel wandlessly in the end. Alternately or in addition, Olivander may have been abducted to make Voldemort a new wand to get around this problem.
18: And Fawkes! (and maybe the ghosts of V's victims based on the US cover)
32: If she's got the guts to write it, Snape should be killed by a vengeful Order member who doesn't know he's secretly good right after Harry tearfully forgives him.
96: What suggested that there is/might be a traitor? I missed that somehow...

Hey Folks! The books are in press, and there is evidence that leaks are starting. Zijester reported that credible chapter titles were briefly online, and despite all of the security, details are bound to start leaking out.

So, let's set a deadline of June 10th for responses!

I've just had another read of the questions, and am wondering about some of them possibly needing debate. I'd suggest doing so in the SPOLIERS thread...

Why don't we remove the ones that are still unanswered and open a new thread discussing them?

Indeed! I went back yesterday and checked my answers to what I now know and I put question marks by the ones that really didn't pertain any longer and then toted up how I did.

I REALLY missed some things...like I don't think anyone got what "Deathly Hallows" really referred to.

There were some that I got as close as the question would allow, but it really didn't have the correct answer anyway. Overall I was at about 78-80%, I didn't do the math on the calculator...but there ya have it.

There were three things that I just totally got wrong...SO WRONG. But it made for nice surprises in the book for me that JKR went a different way with it.

Still it was fun to do and see what the collective group figured out ahead of time, and it was quite a bit actually.

Kudos to all who spent so much time and effort on the quiz and for those who answered all the questions.

Yes, we just did not come up with the "right" answer in many cases. That being said, we pooled our ideas and personally I am impressed that we offered the right choice so often.

Of course, that might because X  Y was the right answer to 83 of the questions........ 8)

That, I think, is to Rowling's credit.

After a few other key peoples have finished, we should go through the questions and see what answers JKR gave. As Gilagar noted, we will find that there will be some debate on some, I think!
