PCE Thread of Denial--More Denial than ever!

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

So does a hot toddy. ;)

LK, have you ever seen the movie Major Payne (my husband insisted I had to watch it). He tells the guy who was just shot in combat that he can help him forget that pain, then breaks his finger. So, your knee said it would help you forget the misery of your sinus surgery... ;)

I have nothing to deny. I admit everything!

The misery of my sinus surgery is pretty much over. Tomorrow will make 5 weeks and the doctor said I should be fairly well healed by week 6. My nose is still a little sensitive to the touch, and I really should use the saline rinse more often than I do cause it does HELP, but I'm doing pretty good as far as the nose goes. :D :P

My KNEE however------and it isn't just my knee. I think I sprained my entire body, if that's possible.

So, what am I denying? Oh yeah!

Denying that I'm going to have to get serious about finding at least a part time job as my unemployment is about to run out.

When I had my "big" surgery three years ago, my doctor said you do most of your healing...90%...in the first six weeks and the other 10% takes about another year.

I hit submit before I meant to...

Anyhow, I'm happy you're doing better, LK. No more tripping, though, okay? ;)

Erinhue, it must mean you have reached the age of wisdom. It was doomed to happen.
Make sure you enjoy it. And much courage to Danimal who will have to handle a retired Dad who will want to do anything but sit down and rest probably :P.

I apologize I haven't been here in a while; I can't deny time flies by and yet feels extremely slow at the same time with a newborn at home.

One thing I can't deny for sure: I was never meant to be a stay-at-home mum. I have taken full advantage of the maternity leave and the extended paid leave that French welfare offers but I will be glad to resume work in June.
And I have treasured every instant with my little one - who turned 6 months on Monday already   - but I need adult conversation, adult time and mostly I need to exercice my brain.

I haven't been able to read or write in the past 6 months due to parental exhaustion :P . I mean I still sleep while he naps otherwise I barely make it through the day. I was only able to pick up the book I started a week prior to Calvin's birth on Sunday and I'm nowhere near the end (or even the middle  ); when you think I was going through one book a week before he arrived  .

I love him to pieces, sometimes it feels my heart will burst. Still I've been working since I was 17 and it's not in my nature to not be working. Mind you I've been helping my husband with his company's accounting and stuff since I started my leave but it's not the same.

LK I hope you get better. Good luck with the job search dear. Wishing you the best.

I still deny nothing. I'm guilty as sin !!!! I did it and then some !!

Good to hear all is going well, Eari and that the little one is growing and is well. Happy for you. I also went to work at a young age and so it was difficult for me to finally retire. (Sold the business retired in fact. The whole nine yards)!!! But still understand your need for adult conversation. It was very similar for me way back when. Continued good fortune for you my friend. May everything go smoothly. Stay happy !

It's strange how a job that's only supposed to be 2 hours a day can kill my day.

Of course, once I get more comfortable it should be easier...I come home exhausted from mental stress and just want to sleep. And mom says it's been a weird couple of weeks as far as business goes. Normally you don't see this until around Christmas.

LK, you should look into Post office jobs...not everything is delivery...there are part time and full time office jobs and distribution plant jobs and other things. it isn't hard, just involved. Leave it to the government to take something that should be simple and make it less so. :D

How does one go about checking out post office jobs? I don't imagine I just go to the local post office and ask for an application, do I? :?

Basic jobs...mostly carriers, clerks etc. are found at usps.com. Scroll down to the bottom and on the left you'll see "careers." The two areas for you to look at is Corporate and Delivery and Operations. The job I'm doing now is called PMR (post master replacement). The next step up is PSE (I forget what that stands for) and so on. Generally the hardest job is city carrier, because it is a LOT of walking...one of my teachers last week said one of her city carriers did eight miles a day...and I know the one woman I used to work with had very nice legs. ;) Rural carrier is a little easier...sometimes you need your own vehicle. The hard part about that is learning the route thanks to 911 addresses...when I learned they were just starting that and I learned on a route that went 1 Main STreet, 2 Main Street, etc. Now it's 51 Main Street, 65 Main Street and there are no houses between... (My house is 659...my parents, right next door, are 789.)

If you click on Delivery and Operations they list some of the jobs they hire for, like custodians and mail handlers. Then you click on a link that says "search and apply" and on the next page "search now." It will most likely take you to another website...usps.gov (I know, weird). You can search by state alone, or state and functional area. Search by state, you'll get the full list and look it over. And it changes regularly, so if you look one day and don't see anything, check again in a few days. Also, if you have a good relationship with your post office, you can ask if they would let you know if something is posted...if a local job comes up, they post it in the office as well as online. That's officially how I knew about this job. (Unofficially, mom told me.)

I clicked on the corporate link also, just to see what was there...and it brought up the same list. PSE Sales and services associate is like a clerk at the window, or working in the back in a large office. I see there is a listing for a post master relief, which is kind of what I do.

These jobs are open to anyone who is age 18 or age 16 and a high school graduate...the hard part for me is the details. Because the government always has to make everything involved. ;) When my mom started 34 years ago it was basically learn the route, case the mail (that's sorting it for the route) and deliver...also occasionally sell stamps and get signatures on certified mail. Then they started incorporating scanners, etc. I'm in a very small office, but I go in morning and bring in the mail that was left for me (we don't have a truck...the truck comes to the other town and then another carrier brings me my mail). I have to separate flats (magazines, newspapers) from letters, and packages. I have to measure how many we have, then separate out the Post Office Box from the rural route. My office is halfway along a rural route that encompasses three zip codes. One zip code office was closed years ago, but they kept their code. The other two offices are small, so they get one rural route. After I separate out the mail, I measure again because I'll need a record of that later, on the computer. In the midst of that I have to go outside and put up the flag and indicate with the scanner that I'm present and I'm checking the boxes for letters. Then go inside and finish sorting through the mail and the packages, I have to scan most of the packages to say they've arrived at the office. Usually once I've done that, I get a call from one of the people to see if they can come get their package :eyeroll: Then I sort the PO Box Mail and then go to the computer and record what I've done. There's more to it than that...but that's the basic idea. Since my office is two hours (3 on Saturday) I start closing stuff about an hour later...and that includes the financial report I don't quite have a handle on yet.

I know that is a LOT of detail...but if you want to try for it, it's worth the effort. You feel like you're signing away your first born when you apply. But starting wages are good, even for part time (I'm starting at just over $12...the rural assistant I trained with, who will also only be part time, will start at around $14). And if you start part time, and do your best, you can move up fast. They told us there are classes you can take for almost anything in the postal service and even outside, like MBA courses, totally free...and you're under no obligation to do anything after you take the test. If you are working as a clerk and take the test for city carrier, you're under no obligation to then apply for the job. Many of the jobs are union too...I'm not, I'm considered the lowest rung of management...I manage myself. And you earn every penny...it's not hard, okay? Just involved. They want you to succeed, and most people in the system will do their best to help you.

I'll keep my eyes open too to see if something is opening up in your area.
