Class of '02 v4: 2017 - now we are 15

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

Class of '02 v4: 2017 - now we are 15

Postby Bardhwyn » Thu Mar 22, 2012 2:27 pm

Welcome!

With the release of The Fellowship of the Ring in late 2001 came a flood of interest in the Professor's works and a flood of new posters to TORC - the majority of whom joined in 2002.

The result was a significant shift in the messageboard's culture - and I believe we, the Class of 2002, are the shapers of the board we see today.

This thread is a place for the class of 2002 to come and hang out, reminisce and share news.

And now we're entering into our FIFTEENTH year!

We've all been through a lot, on the boards and off, since those heady days in 2002 and this thread and this message board is a testament to the magic that is simple, human friendship.

The road goes ever on and on...

Everyone is welcome here. Please join in!

In 2007 the Class of 2002 thread was awarded the prestigious Mellon Award for being a friendly and inviting place.
:D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So welcome all especially those with a joining year of 2002.
Just post a message here and we will see your name goes on the roster!
Honorary Members Always Welcome!
(Special invite to those mid-December 2001 Torcers who arrived just before the December Demise of Torc. :D
Torcers like Leoba! ;) )
*drops into a comfy chair with a steaming mug of cocoa and hopes to meet some old friends and make a few new ones. :) *
A short time ago, near the old '02 Clubhouse....
"Is that it?"
Bardhwyn crawled up to the lip of the ridge, next to where Thar, her lieutenant, lay sprawled on the ground. She peered over the edge and there, below, despite the deepening gloom she could make out the impressive structure that was 'The Clubhouse'. "Yup, that's it." The last few inhabitants had left some hours before and the manse sat, dark and silent, behind it's low stone walls and ornamental front gate.
"It's bigger than I thought," Thar muttered. "Are you sure we can pull this off?"
Bardhwyn grinned. "Damn sure; you forget - I built it."
"Yeah, but an entire building?"
"I have an acquaintance, his name is Hue and he taught me a trick or too about demolishing buildings," she said, still grinning.
"All the clansmen are in place, Number One," a thickly accented voice called out from behind a holly bush. "Waiting on your signal."
"Deso, get over here!" Thar hissed. The Haradrim clansman crawled over, out from his hiding place, his thick arms bristling with tattooed snakes.
"Where are the orcs?" Thar asked.
"All on the northside, upwind, with strict orders not to move, no matter what," the Southron answered, motioning northward.
"Good," Bardhwyn said with an air of satisfaction. "If any of the locals show up, they'll not fare very well at all."
"You said the place was deserted," Thar hissed.
"Oh, it is but some of my 'classmates' can smell an orc three forums away and wouldn't hesitate to take up the hunt at a moment's notice," the Barding replied. "We all know what to do? We have exactly fifteen minutes to get in and take everything of value before the place comes crashing down. Deso, go! Get ready! Thar, you're with me…"
"Why?"
Bardhwyn waited for the Southron to be well away before replying. "There is a strong box," Bardhwyn answered finally. "In the small closet off the study in the back."
"Ah, right." Thar rubbed his bristled chin. "Heavy?"
"We can manage, " she said.
"And?" Thar asked.
"And what?"
"What's your other angle?"
Bardhwyn furrowed her brow. "What do you mean, ' other angle '?"
"You're up to something," Thar said menacingly. "I can tell…"
"You can't tell squat," Bardhwyn retorted. "There is no 'other angle'. We're here to take whatever isn't nailed down and bring the place down."
"Yea. All right, Number One; what ever you say," Thar replied, shaking his head.
Bardhwyn pressed her fingers to her lips and with a low whistle, mimicking a birdcall, the signal was sent and the mayhem began.
Sixteen minutes later, with a loud, low rumble that reverberated into the night the V3 Class of '02 Clubhouse disintegrated into a pile of smouldering rubble.
She slipped off, into the dark, her Clansmen heavily laden with spoil, and she knew, full well, the '02 class would build a new clubhouse, somewhere...
Vana comes dancing out of the woods and sees nothing but rubble where the clubhouse for the gathering of the class of 02 stood.
She stops and stares in disbelief. "What the heck happened to our house?"
Vana glances around and then shakes her head. "I never even heard or felt that earthquake. Wow!!"
Then slowly Vana catches the scent. "ORCS!" she hisses. She crouches down and heads back into the woods follow the scent of the enemy.
So, what's new with me? Well, work is evening out a pace and I'm due for some serious holiday time in April. I'm staying local and planning to do lots of reading and pottering about town. My new music project is going well and we're gaining traction, as it were, with every rehearsal. We have our first gig planned for May 11th (w00t) so hopefully we'll be well received. We'll be a duo; we have hopes of finding a third guitarist/vocalist to join. 'If we build it....'
I've made a promise to myself to do more writing; I'm slowly making progress (hence the dramatic opening post!). I think I may try to re-institute my 'early morning writing practice' which means, conversely, going to bed early - which, all in all, may be a good thing to do, again.
I've finished the Hobbit, again, recently and reading The Sil, again... great stuff. I am again drawn to the myth of Ulmo. Why?? I have no idea.
What a lucky young lady - to be meeting the wonderful world of Middle Earth for the first time and to have you there to share it with her. Yeah, that's nice.
I just put up a plug for the Reading Day on FB; thanks Vana.
How Great this Host of Names
Did you know stories, mythic tall,
birthed from this place to bless us all?
Have you walked with these noble friends
to places where the safe road ends,
out to adventures large and wild,
where lore and treasures have beguiled,
where words create the hills and dells,
the inns and castles, gates and wells,
swords and helms, banners bright,
where words are wielded well with might?
How great this host of well-loved names,
as fond of legends as of games.
I am most blessed to join you all,
within this grand and splendid hall!
Blessings,
Parm :)
A time for remembering
When old friends meet, they celebrate
though dates have passed, and cheers seem late,
but with good friends the past is now
and joy is wreathed on each friend's brow;
thus when I come to bring my cheers,
though months have past, and not swift years,
I cannot help but cheer anew
for all the goodness wreathed on you!
Hooray for gems, for banners, shields,
and all the gladness that it yields.
Hooray for you! For you are why
such fireworks dance in the sky!
Blessings,
This World of Wonders
Our worlds and paths may never meet,
yet how we rush with eager feet
to join our friends her in this place,
as if we knew each voice and face;
so when a time of joy arrives,
the wonder of this convives,
and all our festive, song-filled praise
echoes on for days and days.
What world of wonders is this hall,
when one is loved so much by all,
when shields and gems engender cheers,
words of gladness, joyous tears,
happy thoughts, that strength whereby
a faery heart can truly fly.
To you, dear friend, for friend you are,
look up and see that distant star,
and notice how it gleams so bright,
defying great and mighty night,
for I, beneath that star-bright sky,
rejoice with you, as stars dance by.
No End to Gladness
Perhaps our sentiments repeat,
when time has made ten years complete
the moment when a lovely gleam
adds a bit to our esteem.
Yet, whether we have just begun,
there shall be songs, most gladly sung,
when swords appear, and jewels fair,
add to that name we notice there.
Thus for today, our feting hall,
gathers and a voice shall call,
"A Toast! A Toast! A great big cheer,
for this our friend, now shining here!"
Look now the banners are unfurled!
No end to gladness in this world!
Blessings,
Parm :)
A Noble Word for a Noble Friend
I read our list, and wait to see,
when something shimmers regally,
a sword, a gem, an ebon shield,
a horse upon a verdant field,
and then...yes then...a shining ring:
and while that causes halls to sing,
it is that jewel, bathed in tears,
to signal ten most splendid years!
For in this cyberworld unseen,
with your imagination keen,
you have created mythic tales
which bard remembers and regales.
To you, then friend, of noble name,
may you have more than fleeting fame,
may you leave legends in each heart,
fashioned by your craft and art.
Blessings,
This Raptured Day
New words should be created here
to shape our songs of lasting cheer;
to incarnate the wonder felt
from Saxon lore and songs of Celt,
from Elven song and Hobbit glee,
prepared for parties 'neath That Tree;
for words rhapsodic, splendid, grand,
for all the beauties in your hand --
such rings and shields and swords and gems!
ones fit for queenly diadems,
and now this Evenstar, that gleams --
the stuff of grand romantic dreams --
now yours! For ten full years now past...
for friendships made, and bonds to last.
Blessings,
Parm :)
For GwenElf, Now Glistening and Reminiscing
Postby prmiller » Thu Mar 22, 2012 7:40 pm
GwenElf wrote:Yaaay, reminiscing time! :grouphug:
Arwenelf was the one who introduced me to TORC in the first place -- she'd be looking for info on the movies, I assume, and came across the site and we both joined. By that point, I'd probably seen FOTR half a dozen times (I saw it in theatres 11 times!!) and was mostly a huge Aragorn fangirl. :whistle: I remember that we had just watched Princess of Thieves, a movie about Robin Hood's daughter Gwyn, who is the reason for my screen name (for some reason I thought GwenElf looked better than GwynElf).
I spent months in the Reading Room, mostly reading, then writing (about Aramir and co), before I actually stopped by the forums. I had absolutely no idea how a messageboard worked, and I recall jumping into a thread in Tom's that was an attempt to write out the entire script of FOTR, one line at a time. Someone had gotten a line wrong and I tried to make a post in the middle of the thread, correcting that person, and then was just plain confused when my post ended up at the very end of the thread! :rofl: I honestly don't remember where I went from there, but of course I found my way to RP, the Bard's Guild, the Rings Guild, and then some. :)
Luthy was the first person I met off-board; she'd commented on something I'd put in the RR and we discovered she lived about an hour from where Arwenelf and I lived at the time, so we arranged a meeting, complete with a whooooolllee lot of parental supervision -- her mom's telling of this story is pretty hilarious (I believe Luthy was 13 and Nen and I were 16). :D We actually met at Nen's church where her dad is the pastor and then did archery in her yard--nothing brings TORCers together like having to hunt for arrows in a large field! After that we would meet halfway at the same rest stop every time -- her parents would drop her off there to come to my/Nen's house, or our parents would drop us off to go to her house. I still drive past that rest area and think about all the rendezvous we held at that McDonalds. :D
kaya -- Staying up for the WCAs, such good times! My parents just could not fathom what I was doing and why anyone in the world would want to have an online awards ceremony! :rofl:
I also remember joining in the evening, so until tonight, I will anxiously await the arrival of my shiny!
Brightness Arriving
At first a day must past and then,
a month, a year--then swiftly ten;
but unlike gifts from posts we send,
a day must dawn, a year must end
so that new brightness we shall see
that grace our friends' TORC finery.
Thus when the brightness does arrive,
we feel our festive heart revive
and once again the heart burns bright,
and songs ring out throughout the night.
How glad! How glad! How glad we are,
to see your gleaming Evenstar!
Blessings,
Parm :)
Telta still familiarizing herself with the forums she used to call home came to a halt. A noise some distance away caught her ear and she listened. The ground shook a little and she headed in the direction of the commotion.
No sound did she make as she slipped from the cover of the trees and came to a stop at the crest of the ridge. Keen eyesight aided the elf as she searched the area for any signs of whatever it was that had left the building below in ruins... nothing. All was clear.
A distinct odour drifted on the evening air a scent she was all to familiar with. One that she would never forget nor could she as she had fought with them before. Sky blue eyes burned with the memories of those times and one word crossed her lips...
"ORCS!"
OOC:
Whoa! Not sure where that came from. It seems I had a little spark of the old elf still in me. :blush:
Bardy! :yippie: Hope it's okay to still call you that. It has been many a long day since I last saw you. And I do mean many. Glad to hear that you will get time off in April. And to think it is almost upon us too.
And I do like my Dale blue. :)
For Crystal-Seed Who Glints Ever Brighter
Actually, it is ONE dust bunny wad in particular, an ancient and engorged tangle of flotsam, jetsom and detritus, cobwebs, old popcorn, a cheese puff... you name it (though why you'd want to name a cheese puff is beyond me..?), and what is more startling, astounding and well, just awe inducing is that this particular dust bunny sits up, blinks and starts to speak....
If Bliss Could Shine
I see your name, and smile with bliss,
for shining things, I one ought not miss,
for there, beneath name most fair,
a brighter gem is shining there,
but more than gem, a thing of grace,
once looked upon by Elven face
and mortal eyes, who vowed that day,
with passion words could hardly say,
now yours, and oh! How like that star
that shines in realms where wonders are!
If bliss could shine, then friend, behold,
what craft has made, that joy can hold.
We celebrate his splendid day,
and hope for stars to bless your way.
Blessings,
Parm :)
Whoa...what happened to the old thread? Did we hit 2,000 already?
Telta, hello there! You and I are about to gain our sparkles as Bardy said.
Who would have thought that so many of us would still be around 10 years later (with a few breaks here and there).
*grabs bow tightly*
"So are we hunting Orc or what!?!"
So True the Arrow, So Steady the Hand
No word in your quiver goes errant,
no thought from your bow is misspent,
no image falls short of your target,
so true are the arrows thus sent.
Your heart with a steady compunction
pulls the bowstrings few others could ply,
your story does more than just function--
your steady hand helps my heart fly!
Thank you Parm for your wonderful poem. :heart:
Wow, a new lair. And it looks good. :D
First of all, Parm, that's a wonderful poem. Thank you SO much. :)
Telta, Rho, Bardy, Vana, Heather, Evenstar. :hihi:
I've been very occupied with the house over the past couple of weeks. The tiles are in place now and it looks gorgeous. :D Now I'm browsing stores for a bookcase, kitchen cupboard, am clearing out spaces to reorganize furniture ... Weekends just are too short at the moment. Haven't even had much time to think about writing since too many weeks, and it's starting to mess with my Zen. And those sun filled days where I'm stuck inside at work while I see airplanes coming and going all day long don't help much either. I need a very long holiday. ;)
Talking about holidays, I have a list with possible destinations for this year that is an arm long and I keep changing my mind every other week. :roll: Flying to Vancouver, however, and browsing the area, is steadily moving higher on said list for a while now. Still need to do some calculations to see if I could pull it off financially but Vana, if I'm not mistaking, that would bring me close to your neck of the woods, not? :)
Friday, almost weekend, yay. Hope you all will have an easy end of the week, and a great weekend ahead of you. :D :hug:
RHO! It is good to see you. When I opened this thread this morning and saw you had popped in I was like wow. And then you mentioned my name and it made my morning. :yippie:
It's great to see so many of the let's just say more "mature" TORCer's are still around and some that have been absent are reappearing. I for one fitting the latter description.
A warm hello to kayla, Vana, prmiller, PatriotBlade, Evenstar_of_Imladris and especially to Bardy for opening up this new place.
Are you thinking Vancouver, BC, Canada? Or Vancouver, WA, USA. 'Cause y'know one isn't at all close to the other . . . ;)
:hihi: Hey everyone, great to see so many familiar faces in here! :)
Nice new place Bardy and LOLOL on getting Thar and the crew in on the hi-jinks. :thumbsup: Though I'm sorry to say, once the Scribe waded in, the ranks of orcs got pretty darned thin. :P:D
Lol, Scribbles, I'm sure the one in the US is lovely too, but I'm definitely talking about British Columbia.
Will keep you posted, Vana. :)
Anorast stares around at the ruins of the demolished building. Whoever had destroyed the place had done a very thorough job. But they'd left behind hints of their nature. The elf knelt down and picked up a heavy iron bar, pointed on one end and with a heavy ball at the other. Not unusual in form, the workmenship was clearly orcish. Someone had hired one of the rogue orc bands to bring down the '02 Clubhouse.
"Anything missing?"
His young sidekick looked up from poking around the wreckage. Synthia pushed some hair back from her face as she frowned at the old elf.
"As far as I can tell, everything."
"Everything?" Anorast frowned. Orcs took obviously valuable objects, but generally left plenty of other items behind. Including books. "Even the books?"
"Even the books," Synthia nodded.
"Scout out, see if you can spot any signs of a trail being disguised. Someone else is in need of hunting tonight. Take the west side, I'll check eastward as soon as I take care of some business here."
Pulling up her hood Synthia disappeared into the night. Anorast took one last look of the wreckage before pulling out a small pack of writing material. He quickly wrote out a note and gave it to one of the security guards who'd been hired to watch over the ruins. With luck, the message would find the local dwarf enclave quickly, and they would soon arrive to start cleaning up the site, and rebuild the clubhouse. With extra reinforcement this time. Quietly the old elf disappeared into the night, intent on discovering where all their stuff had been taken.
Rho, nice to see you around here! You missed the excitement of our last home. Nice corrupted thread...you couldn't post without errors. Good times. Lets hope this thread doesn't catch the bug the other one had!
Hmm...sounds like there may be a few people headed this direction...maybe some coordination is called for, so we can throw a nice little party. I've heard Vancouver is a pretty decent place for it...Anyone else interested in coming to our temperate paradise for a good time?
