Older than 60 -- so there!

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

Older than 60 -- so there!

Postby portia » Fri Apr 12, 2013 12:46 pm

OK, so here it is.
Arthritis, poor eyesight, memory loss to the contrary notwithstanding.

The price of admission is to admit that you were born in early 1953 or before.
There are advantages. Just about everything that can happen has already happened.

I am getting close portia. Not there quite yet...but I can see it sneaking up behind me.

And I ain't gonna list all the things that started to break down after I turned 50. Crazy, the old adage, but for me, it is the truth. All downhill after 50.

My brother turned 60 this year and we are Irish twins...that should give a hint. :D

 Too true!

I will hit the big 6-0 on May 10th, and I am CELEBRATING!

I may not LIKE being that old, but darn it, no one says I can't have FUN! :D

Loosing the ones you love make you realize that none of us know just how many more years we'll have on this earth (RIP, Jonny! :( ) so I firmly believe the milestones should be celebrated.

Roger almost didn't reach his 70th birthday, and when he did, I had a feeling it was going to be his last, so I threw a big party. I was very glad I did, because it WAS his last birthday on this earth.

I do hope you all dont mind my popping in and visiting as the youngest so far here. I will be joining you all too soon and I do believe that we should celebrate!

I was told I would not live to be 30 and just last month I celebrated my 57th so I am slowly but surely gaining to the appointed time for the 60 and over bunch. Can I at least be an honorary member till I turn 60???

Hey yall.

portia said...

I was born in just past mid year 1953 and admit I wish I had been born earlier. I have thought fondly of and have said before that I wish that I had been born earlier so I could been a child with my aunts and uncles. Whenever I see them.... I see the childhood in their eyes..in their stories...and so much know I would have loved being a child with them.

I will turn 60 this very year on June 14th.

Then I will be older than I was.

But I will remain a child...with my aunts and uncles.

Thank you all for comments. I didn't realize we had so many who were creeping up on 60.
Actually, I passed the mark some time ago.
Getting older is not for wimps.

However, so many of the things and worries that gave us trouble are no longer important. Also, I am happy that a lot of things that could trouble me have been taken care of by medical science.

Creeping up?!

Oh honey, don't creep up on it.
Run through the damn thing at full speed yelling all the way!
Embrace the term 'Baby Boomer' and thumb your nose at anyone who says 'you're too old'.

Age is in your head.
Yeah, you may not be able to jump as high or as far as you once did,
But you were the generation that stood tall
And changed the world.

At this point I should add what my m-in-law used to say about her age:

"Age is just a number and mine is unlisted!"

(She is the same woman about whom we had to have a family meeting to decide what we would tell the newspaper about her age)

When I go to a ticket window and ask for one adult and one senior, everyone thinks hubby is the senior. Nope; he's only 57. :P I brag to him about the things he saw on TV as afternoon reruns, I saw first run in prime time.

I once read somewhere, the only way to keep from getting old was to find an age you like and stick with it.

So that's what I did. :D

Since I have no further use for my birthday, I gave it to one of my cats. :P

Just found this thread! I present my bona fides: I've been 60 for the better part of a year now. I don't get too fussed about it because I have always expected to live well past 100. Still, that puts me on the shorter side of things.

Saw this on Facebook the other day:

The best thing about my age is that I did all my stupid stuff before the Internet.
"And it is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance else that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen."

There is something profound about standing AT sea level.

As an over 60 person, I find I do not understand taking some of these drugs. There were various drugs around when I was in this age group (Heroin, Cocaine, weed) and probably a lot that I was unaware of. Aside from small amounts of alcohol, I didn't take any.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why someone, especially intelligent people, would take these ON PURPOSE? (Not if something is slipped into a drink secretly).

Is this merely under-development of the frontal cortex, or is something else?

I never had any trouble having fun while sober myself.

Hear; Hear.
Very often, Mr. Portia felt he had to drink to have fun (too much, IMO). I do not understand it either; I can be just as silly sober.

It seems to me that there is an often-overlooked result of Prohibition. That is that people felt they had to drink, or needed to, as the result of it having been illegal.(Think of the "Thin Man ' movies, and many others).
Maybe some of the drug use is some of the same sort of thing.
