Aside from the advice I gave in TVM, when you get to your privacy settings, set them as high as you can...friends only for most of it. And you don't have to friend or accept friend requests from anyone you don't want to be friends with online.

HHEEELLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!

All alone here in the Home Alone thread. It had dropped down quite a bit so I decided to drag it back up.

It's a little after 7 pm and I'm just finishing my last load of laundry. At least my last load for today. When I have several loads to do I usually take it out to my sisters, but I'm trying to not drive my car too much until I can afford to finish getting it fixed. It runs, but oil is leaking into the plugs because the gasket is shot. The mechanic said the more I drive it the worse it will get. and I just paid over $300.00 to have the point, plugs, and ignition wires replaced, sooooooooo......

Really trying not to drive unless absolutely necessary.

Enjoying the brief silence of our church's "War Room"

Postby prmiller » Sun Aug 28, 2016 8:43 am

I sit in a room where decisions are made
to guide and to strength and bless,
I sit in a place where lives are enriched,
and one sees one's own weaknesses less;
the team will soon come, the energy flow,
the laughter and wonder and jokes,
I sit in a place, a now silent place,
that soon hold remarkable folks.

Blessings,
Parm :)

After work today I needed to go to the drug store, and since I'm trying to spare my car any more trauma, I walked.

Wasn't too bad. My feet haven't been bothering me anywhere nearly as bad as they were, for which I am very grateful.

And I certainly need the exercise.

The weather around here has been great lately. I haven't had to use the AC for the last three days or so.

We can stay cool with just open windows and fans. I LOVE IT!!

Wish it could stay this way the rest of the year.

I didn't get my wish, big surprise. The humidity has been miserable these last few days.

I repotted my plant today. Yes, the dear little thing is still hanging in there.

I hope it doesn't die of shock from my ham-fisted handling.

Leaving behind echoes

Postby prmiller » Sat Sep 10, 2016 8:50 pm

There is only me who is posting right now.
Some folks are resting somewhere and somehow
despite all the struggles and strains and events
that leave some less eager to share their two cents.
So here are some coins that I leave for such folks,
missing their laughter and riddles and jokes,
glad for the visits and stories and such,
and those are the reasons I love TORC so much!

So far so good plant wise. I'm thinking of naming it "Kathy."

She was a friend of mine who not only had a green thumb, but ten green fingers.

If she were here, the little plant would never die.

I hope it sticks around for me.

Well, I'm back, LK and I'll try to help you revive the thread!

I need to make a point of cleaning out my email regularly. I let it pile up, then miss things.

Today I actually put on flannel pajamas. It rained all day and kept the temperatures down. It's funny how 70 in June feels different than 70 in September. And in just a few days it will be October, and I'll be officially another year older. Pooh.

I'm with you, LK. Technically I'm unemployed, but with all the help I do, I'm almost as busy as when I worked full time!

Once I figured out that the corporate mind was evil and my job was going to literally kill me I realized that leaving was not enough I had a family to support so I would have to get anther job. I had taken the job I had because it suited my talents, I realized that I could make a lot of money if I was smart and good with people ( :cavetroll: I am both) I did make a lot of money with that job but I also knew that job was going to be the death of me so why take another like it? OK so what then?

I figured out that the same talents/gifts that helped me do so well with the Corporation, could be used for something I might really want to do. Long story short (Too late for that, 'Hue) I did some grantsmanship research and created the plan for the community center I now run. I love the work, mainly because with the dire exception of the dread M&M's what I mainly do is sit around and talk to people, in my office, in their office and on the phone. Perfect for a lazy cuss like me.

Don't get me wrong here. The job is tough. I keep a constant supply of tissues as I have had that many people cry at my desk. I try to cheer them and listen to them and offer what meager help that I can. I love my kids but I can see the dead end sign over too many of them already. I put band aids on bullet wounds and try to staunch the misery but there is actually very little I can do to solve the real, deep problems. Every now and again someone will have a serious issue and I actually can find a way to solve it for them or help them work it our for themselves. Those little victories are oh so very sweet I will stay here and keep the doors open for as long as I can. It gets harder all the time but I keep trying and manage to keep it going. when I finally fail to do so, which is becoming more and more inevitable, then I might retire

Hue, my husband has often said if he were still in the job he had at the state, he'd be making over six figures and probably also be dead. ;) He was the only computer maintenance person for the six or eight county Department of Transportation district we live in. Constantly on the road. Constantly getting crap from people who didn't know what they were doing or talking about. But very good at his job. Anyhow, some very bad things happened (he was a cause of a couple of them, unfortunately) and he ended up arrested and put on trial for some things he actually didn't do, but the AG wanted a victory in order to get reelected and railroaded our tiny county court...ultimately, he spend 2 years in state prison and actually is probably living today because of it. So, blessings sometimes come from bad things.

Oh, and he's now stuck with me. ;)

I actually enjoy being a part time reporter more than full time. I miss my coworkers at The Progress...I miss our silly discussions and being in touch with what is going on in the county, but the stress is less. And I enjoy taking care of Bob, my elderly friend. It's also low stress and can be fun at times...like when he recently was recognized as one of the few living WWII vets in our area recently. And in pretty good health at 93.

My GodSmack came when after a night of wining (mostly Vodka) and dining (very little of that) some clients, I did the stupid thing and wrapped my car around a tree. Had to cut me out of it and I was a total wreak for a long time. I was thinking about making a change and that much like ex Pres GW. was the decider

Hue: I wish it was that simple. The job I work for, the corporate masters are tremendously evil and we're (Mrs. H and I) are beginning to realize that it's untenable, but it's also unchangeable since there's no other place to go that's better. It's not as if we can just accept lower paying positions, we need the money to survive (NJ is an expensive place) and we need the Health Insurance (as much of a joke as it is).

Really, we're actually starting to look into what it would take to move to England permanently and even Naturalize there. Or Sweden. This place is just killing us in a slow and horrible way.

But, that aside, everything's great!

Hamlet: move to Alaska: no income tax, no sales tax...and lots of elbow room. ;)

Today was one of those days...I had a meeting that went four hours, two of those in executive session, very tense the entire time...I just wrote the article and I had to relive the whole thing. Ugh.

Alaska is COLD!!! Well, unless global warming has its way I suppose.

Today is just one of those quiet days, though I hesitate to jinx it that way. Just have to get the nice gentleman who's here for an interview through Security, and then step back and watch the chaos go by.

Tomorrow, our department here is having a little "say farewell to summer" picnic, and we're looking forward to that. Some good-ish food, eaten outside on the lawn, and at least a little conversation.

My late brother-in-law lived in Alaska for about 10 years.
He didn't mind the cold he was unnerved by the moose.
They would just wander about your yard leaving moose droppings
One actually ate his tree. It wasn't a very tall one, but still...

Small moose or small tree? Or both?

Parts of Alaska are quite temperate, especially in the Juneau area I'm told. It's a big state...easy to get lost...hmmmmmm...

I've considered moving to Antarctica just because of bugs. But I'd have to have a useful contribution to a scientific team and I don't think being a geek with word skillz qualifies me.

Antarctica with the understanding that I'm not paying the heating bill and not setting foot out the door but maybe to go on vacation? Maybe. But not likely.

Nah, actually, I've begun to ponder Montreal and the wonders of a summer that doesn't break above 80 or so I'm told. Just not sure I want to imagine the winter heating bill. That's kind of why I like New Jersey. Yeah, it gets hot in summer, but not TOO hot. Yeah, it'd cold in the winter, but not TOO cold. It's that happy medium. It's close to NYC and Philly if the insanity ever strikes to go there. It has lots of nice country and burbs and etc. and lots of variety. I never have to go too far to get something. And it's close to the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo Park (about an hour drive for us). So, good all around. It's just a couple of issues right now that are killing it for me.

Today is one of those perfectly lovely days. A bit sunny for my tastes, but lovely otherwise. I hope that this means we're going to have a nice autumn around here. So very tired of sweating like crazy in 90+ heat. Could really use some rain though.
