An Old Bard's TORCiversary

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

An Old Bard's TORCiversary

Postby erinhue » Tue Aug 05, 2014 7:28 pm

14 years ago last night an 8 month old baby boy refused to sleep and it was daddy's turn to sit with the confirmed non sleeper. After umpteen replays of the *&^% Hamster Dance Daddy sought to preserve what was left of his sleep deprived sanity by surfing up something, anything, else. The first of the first movies had not yet been made and there was already much buzz about the coming event.
I fell in love with LOTR when I was about 14 and have been excessively hooked ever since. I looked it up and found several sites devoted to the books and coming movies. I looked at TORN and was not very impressed so on to the next site in the search.

When I clicked on the link the first thing I saw was a request from the Reading Room for poetry submissions. Right then and there, as if it had already been written Treebeard's Lament popped into my head. I typed it up and submitted it and then went on to check out the rest of the site.

I was at home with my people. I felt like the Bee Girl in that old video I had found my place with like minded souls who loved the books as much as I did. I nosed around and discovered that RP was going on here not the stupid games of one upsmanship that some places were calling RP back them but real thought out tales and actions with an emphasis on story and not beating each other out in words. This was definitely for me.

I discovered that there were lots of Elven maids and warlords, wizards and dwarfs, an Ent or two, hobbit lads and lasses, denizens of the dark, servants of the Eye and even the Dark Lord's hideout Barad Dur ( miss ya always Big Guy) I say that there was a serious lack of good old MEN represented and I decided that is what my character would be a plain old man

Those that know me, know I could not be a plain old anything. Had to have an edge so I became a Bard. I always like the free wheeling roguish image of a bard and from other gamings I knew they were also clever and could be devious when necessary. They were mostly Good Time Charlies and that suited me just fine. I wanted to go into battle so a Warrior Bard it was.

A bard needs an instrument. OK I play piano but that would be impractical not to mention impossible to carry that around the countryside on horseback. Hmmm. I thought about it. What is a piano but a big harp in a box. I got rid of the box, shrunk the piano sized string structure to the size of a hand held Irish harp and I had my instrument.

It was pretty hard to break into the scene back then or so I felt. I knew no one and everyone seemed to know everyone. How was I gonna break into this close little circle. I just know or at least my :cavetroll: sized ego knew that if they could just see how witty and creative I could be that would get me in. To do that I needed someone or something to interact with so I could show'em my stuff. From this need Agarak my bad tempered and self willed harp was born. Once again if ya know me ya know I could not just have any old harp so Agarak became a dragonharp and the rest as they say.....

That baby is now a 14 year old who is nearly as tall as I am with a very fine but visible mustache. I never thought that first night that I would still be coming here these 14 years later.

I knew that I loved this place the moment I found it. What I never could have expected was that this place, these magical wonderful people would be what sustained me throught the darkest worst most horrid time I have ever had to live through. I will say it any time TORC saved me and helped me back into the light of life. This place and all of you are in my heart forever. I still have every single one of those wonderful postcards pinned up on the wall behind my computer screen. After all these years they are still a comfort

I have babbled here long enough I'm a bard and we tend to be long winded like that but I had to post not so much to mark my time here, as to express my great gratitude to TORC and to all who live here for having me for all these years. From one very thankful broken down old bard, I want to say Eternally Grateful

The finest rhymes ever seen
from the Bard of Old, Dragon's kin
With blades of words & arrows keen
A keystone of what TORC's been
But offer a beer, he won't be mean
drinks it all up in a single min!
A Glorious father, a gentle soul
Most of all, a great human being.
Aye behold! The Master's fourteen
and buy this bard a barrel of gin!

I AM A SPAMMER AND I AM TOTALLY CRASHING THIS PARTY.

Er... ahem... I mean, reformed spammer. In 13 years I've learned that maybe I don't need to say everything that crosses my ... wait, no, I'm a woman, when I think, I must speak. Shakespeare knew this; I know this; the deep, dark depths of these forums hold much evidence of this.

Happy TORCiversary, Hue! I remember you were marvelous.

I see I'm late to the party, as usual. But Master Hue, I could not miss the chance to give you a hug and an congratulate you. And also tell you that you have been a great teacher, inspiration, and friend. This place taught me to love writing again, at a time when I had been forced to doubt (and even deny) my calling. You in particular, Master Hue, not only showed me where my heart lie, but also taught me to be a better writer. Your story and the friends I have made here have gotten me through a number of dark, dark times as well. We are a family, in a very strange way. :-D

Hue! I'm very late to the party. Congratulations on your TORCiversary and happy birthday. :) I remember your first posts - all that poetry. I honestly thought you were a little odd - no-one else posted like that back then! (I was also a little intimated, since I am utterly useless at poetry.) However, you stuck around, despite people like me wondering what on earth was happening to TORC, and you have enhanced it. :) Well done! :D

Congrats again, and here's to 14 more! :drink:
