HEEELLLLLOOOOOOOOOO the home alone thread

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

Weren't we just talking about an Oxford M00t? Last night Dean (Hobbituk) posted a 10 year Oxford tribute on FB. It's been mentioned that perhaps a M00t could be planned for Aug. 5-7, 2022 so start saving your pennies!

rwhen, that particular photo I did not take because I couldn't figure out how to get one of my photos the correct size and linkage to try to put in the signature. Hobbiton was so beautiful, truly a dream come true. It's hard to take a bad photo of the Shire (unless I was in it, grinning like an idiot). How about this one? Samwise & Rosie's place. The only hobbit hole with 2 doors. <3 <3 <3

An Oxford Moot in 2022 - this is one of those occasions where I'm very glad that I've got relatives who live in England that could have me over for a day or two. Hopefully they're still living there by that time, and haven't moved to some other far-off country! :D

Speaking of far-off countries, I have always wanted to see the beautiful hobbit holes at Matamata - talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience: that must be truly incredible, to go there.

Thor'n, Hobbiton (and New Zealand) is truly amazing. It was simply a dream come true. We kind of decided to go short notice with only about 3-4 months of planning. We went to WETA workshop and saw some of the filming locations. We found and sat in the tree that Frodo was sitting in in the Shire when Gandalf arrived. We had to search in a woods for that in a park in Wellington. The tree has grown quite a lot so it was not quite the same experience taking a photo in it. The woods there smelled heavily of eucalyptus, which I did not expect and the sound of the locusts or some insect was loud. We went in March and that is the beginning of their fall.

We went to the Evening banquet tour at Hobbiton. The evening banquet only serves about 36 people, so it's not overcrowded... more like a big thanksgiving feast. It was a dream come true. Even the restrooms were done up in a Shire-like manner. No cheap plastic things or fake stuff although there are no hobbit holes with full interiors, but the Green Dragon Inn is the real Deal. A full service pub/restaurant. The attention to detail throughout is insane. I cannot tell you how magical it was. Simply exquisite.

Hello all!!! I understand that someone (rwhen) has mentioned me a time or two.

So glad to see so many still coming in here.

Ooo Tooks I love Mexican food!! That looks absolutely delicious! Tell Louis to keep his paws out of the salsa!! ;) :nono:

rwhen darling I am sorry that you don't have any good Mexican restaurants in your area. We used to go out to Mexican fairly often but our favorite place sold out so we just don't seem to go our much anymore. But I am sure getting the hankering for chips and refried beans and salsa again. :D

How is everyone doing? I should be on here more since I am home body now. I will try to devote a little time each day to check in and see what's happening.

Tonight Ryan is treating our camping pavilion for mold and mildew. So far what he has done is looking good. It's a 16' by 16' canvas pavilion. We have another SCA event in a little over a week and I sure hope we can take the pavilion then. If we do not treat it I can't go into it because of my breathing difficulties. But it looks like if it is dry enough we can take it and use it. I will get pictures of it set up if I can.

I am a home body now because I got forced into disability last November. My aorta sprung a leak and it turns out it was in the place that was repaired 11 years ago. So I had to stop working and stay home keeping my blood pressure below 120 and my pulse rate below 80. Also placed on blood thinners and extra blood pressure meds along with what I was already on.
I was notified last week that my disability finally went through. So I now have some money coming in to help. I am so thankful for that!

Would love to go to New Zealand and see Hobbiton but I don't think that will ever be possible for me. But I can live through you all vicariously and enjoy it with your pictures.

Glad to see you again and look for me to return more often! Love you all!

Your trip to New Zealand sounds absolutely magical, Rose - I'm glad that the place is very clean and really immerses you in the experience: it's an experience I hope to enjoy someday soon! I almost started crying when I visited the Tolkien exhibit in New York this year: I can't even imagine what sort of emotions I'd be feeling, standing next to Bag-end, or sitting down in the Green Dragon Inn!

Gandalf's beard!! Rooting and raiding the HOME ALONE HOUSE???? Not again, last time it took a month to clean it properly. ;)

Tooks, I am going to send you an email. I am trying to remember how to log in as Mugsy and need to see a post on that thread that loved us so much we had to leave. =:) Do you remember the name of it in the Pony????

Vanadarlin', very happy to see you post.....and also that you are able to still make it to your beloved SCA events!!! I know Guru is a huge part of that organization. Now that you have your disability, let me know if you are ever planning a trip down this way, we could perhaps meet in the middle or some such. I think we tried that once or did it once. LOL my noodle brain!! Would you be interested in an RP VERY light? Tooks and I .... for the moment the two of us.... have two charries, Louie and Mugsy that are going to start a quest....I'll start an OOC today if you are interested. It will be set in ME and TolkienISH...I hope....but it should be silly and just for fun. If you are interested, let me know. Nothing heavy or requiring too much thought, I mean consider the source and that goes...

For anyone else who might be interested as well!! Please think on it.

Rose!! I got my mail today from you and it will be framed and hung under the painted oval of the beautiful bird you made me!! *preens* Thank you so much!!

Okay.....gotta put myself in the head of a huge red macaw!!

Vana, I too was glad to hear you are still doing the SCA. I would imagine that is a lot of fun, once you have most of the gear. I had thought about joining our local chapter but hubby was not interested. I have to content myself with going to the renn faire every once in a blue moon. I'm sorry to hear of your health woes.

rwhen, glad you got it. I hope it made it there in good condition. ;) I saved one for myself.. I hadn't thought of framing it.. but it's not a bad idea. It would look nice here by my desk rather than stuffed in a pile of papers. ...Red macaw??

The weather here is pretty nice for mid-summer, although we could use a bit of rain. What's it like where everyone else lives?

rwhen I will think about it but for the next couple of weeks I am really busy with SCA stuff. Trust me I will surely think strongly about it. I do miss light RP.

Rose so glad to see you too hon. Ah the health stuff is what it is. I could be so much worse off, like 6 feet under. But I am breathing with oxygen and doing okay. I can still do for myself most of the time.

Vanadarling, great to see you here! Have fun at the SCA and come back with your tales.

Rose, I'm the same way - a Ren Faire every few years is as much as I ever do. Long ago, we had friends who were really into it, and we used to dress up and go have fun. But they moved away, and I never found anyone else with the matching level of commitment.

You know, I never had the oportunity to get into any of that... yet? I’ve always sort of watched and yearned from a distance. Don’t have a lot of Ren Fairs going on in my area and its not easy to travel abroad from here. No just jumping in the car and having at it. Oh well.

Vana! I’m caving in to my curiosity here. What is “SCA?” I have no clue, and instead of going to the “googles” for some sort of dissipationate wiki article, I thought I’d ask. Is it fun? is it cool? Should I get involved?

HHHHEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL da house!!!

Vanadarlin, get sick of YOU.....HA as IF!!! I am sure I am already grinding on everyone's last nerve.....but *preens* that is sort of a specialty for me, isn't it!! <---not a question. :P And I know I am and many are totally thrilled that you are back and stretching yourself into fine form. Get those fingers worked up!!

Frelga Lady!! Tis to laugh!! It is ALL about Louie...he just drags Mugsy into trouble. =:) I have never been to a Ren Faire or an SCA event....I have to admit, the costume thing and outdoor thing is just past my years at the moment, I'll leave it to the young (like Vanadarlin'. :P ) to carry on. But in my MIND I go to all events. Howzat work for ya?? And oh, BTW good silverware???? That thieving raccoon can't leave ANY shiny object alone and from his tiny sticky hands. We use plastic utensils about here....nice ones to be sure, but nothing shiny. ;)

Quill. Society for Creative Anachronism. Okay...now chew on THAT until Vanadarlin' enlightens further. The SCA moniker always confused me as I actually do know what happens at SCA events. But she can explain it better than I. She and Guru have been involved for a very long time and Guru holds a very prominent position in their area SCA. Congrats Guru!! (hey he needs to post here too!! Just Sayin!!) Have away Vanadarlin'.....

Digs out the HELLO credit card and orders up an Italian fest. ENJOY. :grouphug:

Nobody here but this weirdo at this time of night!

OH!!! Italian!! My other favorite food!! (along with Mexican, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, American, Hawaiian, Slovakian, um... and so many others!!!) :D

I did not realize/remember Mugsy was a macaw. A red one at that. Silly me.

Ages ago we used to belong to a Civil war group. I made a prairie dress and a big fancy ball gown, both which used a hoop skirt. Hubby had a Union Army outfit with all the trimmings, muskets & carbines, etc.. etc.. We were part of a group that would go to places like the Ford Museum or outdoor living history museums and they would have skirmishes and sometimes teas or balls put on by historical societies. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work and it can be expensive. So, when I had thought about getting into the SCA, I had a good idea what it might all involve. I like to dress up and have made many costumes. My daughter & I have had 2 different matching Ren. faire costumes and I made her a 'princess' type gown. I've thought about making another for myself, even though we don't go often. It is so much (more) fun going dressed up. We have a Ren. faire about 2 hours drive from here.

I briefly thought of getting into Civil War reenactment, but realized that the expense was going to be prohibitive, so I just watch. :D We love going to Gettysburg during July 4 events, but it gets HOT and can be very crowded. But fun.

I have a friend who used to do reenactments...this was before we knew each other well...and was one of the extras in the movie Gettysburg. He said he and his friend thought about asking Jeff Bridges for an autograph (they were in the Little Round Top scenes) and decided they would play it cool instead. Now he regrets not getting his book signed. So after I heard that story, I watched very closely and I think I caught sight of him briefly in the battle scenes. He still wears period glasses to this day. :D

HHHEEELLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO da house!!!

Rose. No worries, Mugsy was an RP charrie from many moons ago that Tooks and I are playing with bringing back. Nothing but trouble those two, if they are around, best to find somewhere else to be, just sayin'. ;) I have only been to a Ren Faire as a spectator, never has a participant. But it was fun and there were many great good to be bought, all handmade of course. I am like you, I love all sorts of food...pretty much you name it I love it. Very few exceptions, but those exceptions are firm!! I love Greek food, I need to cook it more! Hope you are having some good days....do I owe you a mail??

Iris. Great to see you. I never went to a civil war reenactment. With the last name of Davis I often wondered if I did my genealogy back that I would find I was related to Jefferson Davis and that would bother me. ;) Hope all is well with you and Rob. :)

Not the perfect sampling of Greek food...but it will do as I am off to the grocery store for a major shop. Then lazy me on the couch the rest of the day!!!

HHHHHHHEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO all. We miss you here, it is comfy, large fluffy sofa's, reading nooks, large kitchen and pantry, cozy fire always burning. Help yourself. All welcome.

:grouphug: :hihi:
Love is as big or as little as a hug!!

Ahrefs.com is still here. As well as Iris. ;) And 2 visitors! A crowd! :P

A couple of years ago we went to Gettysburg. We stayed in a Bed & Breakfast that had bullet holes in it from the Civil war. We took a personal tour of the battlefield. The guy that took us was a retired History professor or something. He was fascinating and full of information. It was a really cool thing to do. The reenactment group we had belonged to had represented the 2nd Wisconsin Iron Brigade unit so he especially showed us where that unit had been. It would have been cool to have been an extra in the movie. I remember at the time hearing they were looking for extras, but we are pretty far away and I think you had to be on fairly short-notice call.

rwhennie, I have a few exceptions too. I cannot eat shellfish. I've had escargo --they don't taste bad but the idea makes me want to gag, so.. no. I'm not big on salmon, but I will eat it. I do not care for most sweet/sour foods especially if they are oily. Greek food. YUM. I bought a nice big piece of spanikopita at the farmer's market yesterday. Oh, so good. As far as relatives go.. you can't choose them. I think wwaaaaaay back many, many, MANY times removed I'm related to Dick Cheney. :( We're probably all related if we go back far enough.

I've been doing some Ancestry.com stuff and taking each thread back as far as to the country of origin...if I can. I've found I'm so Scottish (on my mom's side) that I should probably have a brogue. ;) A few German, one French (which is probably actually German) and some Irish and English. I'm very Anglo. No one famous, which is probably a good thing.

When we go to Gettysburg we try to search out Jeff Shaara. His dad wrote Killer Angels and he picked up where his dad left off and is quite prolific. I have several signed books. He's very nice.

Speaking of prolific, you guys realize there something to the tune of over 3 million posts on this sight?

Anyway, civil war reactions are awesome, always wanted to take part! My ancestors are came over long after that though, so I don’t really have any relational ties. Mostly German for me, with Polish thrown in for a little spice. I think I once heard we had a Nazi spy hanging in the family tree somewhere. Some great-great uncle or some-such.

Iris, good to see you! :)

:D Yandex doesn't even try to hide it.

Hey. They next time y'all go to Gettysburg, let me know. I live 1 hour away. notlistening and I went there back in... 2006???

A co-worker was an extra is the Gettysburg movie. He is an amputee so he got to play a realistic battlefield patient, but I think he never made the final cut. bummer.

So..... what's for breakfast?
