Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

This is the best explanation of the Electoral College that I ever heard. I saw it on a MAD TV skit years ago. It's not verbatim but went something like this:

"You and I live in a large house with twenty other people. We're both trying to get elected leader of the house.

Fifteen people vote for you and only five vote for me, but I win, because those five people were standing in the kitchen."

I think that sums it up nicely. :P

No rain here but the temps are in the 70's and the humidity is very low.

Which makes me very happy. :D

That...sounds about right. Whenever YouTube finally gives me an ad that isn't political, I watch it all the way through to encourage the algorithm.

I did not know about "encouraging the algorithm." I may start doing that myself. :D

So.

Been doing some thread diving.

Here is a gem. A jewel. The j00l of all J00lz!!!!!

Here is the post that gave birth to MoME:

Post by Ethel, Sept 17 2002

from Raddy's "What Cometh after Celeborn?" thread NOTE: In September 2002 the m00bies forum had a Celebrating Celeborn thread. It is a h00t too!)

So... Mammo and I were chatting last night via TORC's Buddy message feature which, though lame in many ways,
sort of works... if you're very patient. Anyway, here's the idea we came up with. For October, instead of
having ONE person to celebrate, how about having a Males of Middle-earth (MOME) "pageant"? The idea would be
for each participant to take a different person from the movie (except Arwen) and represent them. At the end
of the month, awards would be given for: best looking, best hair, best costume, most charisma, kewlest,
talent, congeniality. Or whatever - suggestions welcome. We'd also need to designate some judges.
There could be a mega thread where we would each argue the case for "our" participant. Obviously premiere
members would want to fully utilize their signature features to promote their candidate.
I do think the candidates would have to be allotted, though, or everyone would just choose Legolas, Aragorn
or Boromir. And I think it would be a lot more fun if people were forced to make the case for Barliman,
Haldir, Lurtz, Bilbo, Gwaihir, Bill, etc.

Am I crazy? Would this be too much trouble? Would it be in bad taste? Does anyone else think this is a good
idea?
In case I'm not crazy - I think the jury's still out on that - here are some of the 'candidates' I think we
should consider:

Isildur, Frodo, Bilbo, Mr. Proudfoot, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Farmer Maggot, Barliman, the Ringwraiths (group
entry), Gandalf, Elrond, Legolas, Boromir, Gimli, Saruman, the Watcher, the Balrog, Lurtz, Haldir, Haldir's
"friends", Celeborn (or should he be disqualified?), the Eye, Gwaihir, Bill the pony... any others? What do
you think? Or were you all really set on Haldir?

Happy 47th birthday Jason David Frank. The best of the best of all Power Rangers

Have a picture taken with him at a convention a few years ago. Though I don't like crowds such as these, Tommy was totally worth it !!!

Never did get into Power Rangers, Ninui but it's always fun to meet your favourite characters at conventions (even though they are scawy, crowded places)

I've been lucky enough to meet a few: Karl Urban (Eomer, Bones) Craig Parker (Haldir) Aaron Ashmore (Killjoys, Warehouse 13) David Giuntoli (Grimm) I could have lined up to meet Jason Mamoa but the line was humungous. My friend did though and got a hug and photo.

My poor country has been divided by state borders until covid cases get under control in Victoria. Hopefully there is an end in sight as the state premier gives a press conference today telling them when they can leave their homes. We have 16 active cases in my home state. I think they are all dreaming if they think we can go 28 days with no community contact because the insidious disease just won't die. NZ had about 100 days without any then boom! 6 cases...from who knows where. But we can hope for a vaccine soon!!

Some peoples have met lots of famous peoples. (looks pointedly at nl)
Some of us have not. *sniff*

:thppt:

nl, you have a lot fewer cases than the rest of us. PA is happy just to have daily new cases around 500. Of course, with students going back to school, those number have gone up. :P

Just a little brag if you don't mind.

Have met James Doohan, Grace Lee Whitney, George Takei, De Forest Kelly. For those that know who he is, I traveled far to meet Joe Kenda at an IDTV convention.
Missed out on Meeting Norman Reedus and Scott Wilson from the Walking Dead cause they confirmed late and too late to get tickets to go. Met Mark Lindsay from Paul Revere
and The Raiders too. Four of the above have passed on so I still feel blessed that I got the chance to meet before they left us.

And I must get this in before he sics the Jaffa on me for forgetting ......

"Happy Birthday Cliff Simon ..... Ba'al ...... 58 and ever lovely ....

See. Ninui met lots of famous peeples too. :(

I did see William Shatner in person once, though I did not 'meet' him. Does that count?
He did a lecture/talk thing at my university. This was even before the first Trek movie came out. Like, eons ago. :D

A Shatner sighting certainly counts.

Where I used to work, I saw Billy Connolly wandering the hallway, sat in the audience for an interview with Kevin Costner, Patrick Stewart and Robert Llewellyn from Red Dwarf.
In my current job sat in the audience for Isaac Hempstead Wright from GOT. (that was full of scary Thrones fans) Also saw Katee Sackoff and Joe Flanigan at my first ever Comic Con audience. And at the Opera House they had an Audience with Joss Whedon but I was very far away from him. And last but not least, sat in an Audience with Peter Jackson. He showed us some very fun LOTR bloopers.

Man, those names were heavy and needed to be dropped... ;) :D

Nichelle Nichols presented me with a door prize at a Star Trek convention in Texas. I met superfan Bjo Trimble (who authored the Star Trek Concordance) at the same con. That was around 35 years ago. Years before that I met writer L. Sprague de Camp at a Rochester, NY con. Just a few years ago (2016) I had a nice conversation with author Keith R.A. DeCondido at the last EerieCon at Grand Island, NY.

Welcome to the TVM, Oktau. You may not have realised it but you have stumbled into a web of duct tape and weirdness. It's like the Hotel California here. You can check out anytime you want but you can never leave. :P 8) :D

I read an article today that said Diana Rigg has passed away. :cry2:

She was a wonderfully talented actress who had films, plays, and awards to her credit, but I will always remember her as Mrs. Emma Peel from the old British TV series The Avengers.

I loved that show although I didn't get to watch it a lot. When I was a teenager there was no cable, no BBC America. Occasionally, but not nearly enough for me, I could catch a few episodes on the PBS station.

I always wanted to be Mrs. Peel (or Wonder Woman but I wasn't born an Amazon.) I think that's why I took martial arts lessons when I was old enough to pay for them on my own. I took fencing too, but didn't get too far with that.

I wish I had met her at con or book signing or something. Now I never will.

She was a great lady and she will be greatly missed. <3
