Indeed. And a local brewery used 'long neck' pumpkins (squash) to make their famous pumpkin beer for the season.

So. There is about 3 tons of acorns on the ground all over my back yard. The squirrels better not try to act like they are starving this winter!!! (yea, the squirrels remind me of Calma)
I expect that there will be oak seedlings all over the place in the spring too. :D

Speaking of pumpkin stuff, there are my delish pumpkin muffins. I shall have to make some soon. :D

Tooksey, I've heard the deer love acorns in winter. Do you have any of those roaming your yard?

notlistening... do they not enjoy pumpkin in your corner of the world? Pumpkin pie.. pumpkin pecan pie, pumpkin bars, pumpkin muffins. I'm not a coffee person, so I don't drink pumpkin spice lattes (or beer).. but I love butternut squash soup (which I thought sounded weird before I tried it). What about Halloween? Is that a thing down under? I suppose that all seems odd as it's the wrong season..

Cute Halloween gif rwhennie!

We went to the pumpkin farm, but we have yet to carve our pumpkins.

Ha ha ha ha!!!! Do I have deer roaming in my yard!!!????? They practically live here! During the day they hide out over the hill and sleep in the brush. They eat my tomato plants. Browse on my redbud saplings. And just forget about ever growing tulips in the Spring!!!!111111

rwhen!!!! It's you..or are you discussing just this thread and not the entire board.

I have been a one woman posting machine lately...then again, I do feel kind of lonely, although Ninui has been keeping up quite well..and Tooks.

We are missing Vana, Ladykat, Sunsilver will be out of commission for awhile I imagine, Thor...hasn't been back to the book thread, Parm popped in..that was good. Yeah, maybe it has been slow all over, if you look in any forum, it's me that's dominating the board right now..

Witchie.....go for it...we need the posts to keep it all running like a well oiled machine and if it is in your heart to do so, then DO so.l :D

Rose....I love the photo, but I have to agree with Tooks and Witchie....that looks a bit sketchy to me. Did you carve your punkin' yet?? ;)

Ninui...do you think that sheep is lonely? Ahhhhh.

A Halloween fun fact: Did you know this about your Jack-o-Lantern?

People have been making jack-o-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with it ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."

In Ireland and Scotland, people began to make their own versions of Jack’s lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits. In England, large beets are used. Immigrants from these countries brought the jack o’lantern tradition with them when they came to the United States. They soon found that pumpkins, a fruit native to America, make perfect jack o’lanterns.

OOoooh! Fun story Ladykat. I knew it originated in the UK and I knew about the carved turnips/potatoes, but I didn't know about stingy Jack. I love myths & such. I suppose most LOTR lovers do.

rwhennie, nope, not carved yet. Maybe tomorrow. I think our trick or treat is Sunday. I don't like to carve them too far in advance because they get moldy and it's been freezing here at night & I don't want to bring moldy pumpkins into the house. That pic looks like Totoro!

Tooksey.. nice costumes.

Here's a cool Halloween yard display I saw online.

Tooks---I like the Fall pics. The leaves aren't really changing here. At least not the trees close to me. I can't really get out and check out the Metroparks.

Will go and find more Halloween legends and traditions. I like to read about stuff like that.

More Halloween stuff:

In olden times, it was believed that during Samhain, (pronounced Sow-in) the veil between our world and the spirit world was thinnest, and that the ghosts of the deceased could mingle with the living. The superstition was that the visiting ghosts could disguise themselves in human form, such as a beggar, and knock on your door during Samhain asking for money or food. If you turned them away empty-handed, you risked receiving the wrath of the spirit and being cursed or haunted. Another Celtic myth was that dressing up as a ghoul would fool the evil spirits into thinking that you were one of them so that they would not try to take your soul. In the U.S., trick-or-treating became a customary Halloween tradition around the late 1950s, after it was brought over by Irish immigrants in the early 1900s.

*sings*

They see you when you're sleeping......

Baby jumping spiders....

:D :D :D

LK, that post explains quite a bit about the whole 'dressing up and going door to door for Halloween' thing that we do. When I was a kid Halloween was a favorite holiday. You got candy!!! You got to dress in disguise! We loved it. :D I remember one year my whole family (mom and dad included) dressed up and went trick or treating. That was the year I wore my Casper outfit. Yes, I had one. :D

Rose... awesome photo. Better you than me. ;)
I shouldn't laugh though. There was one year (2011 - I just looked it up) that we had snow for Halloween. A lot of the trees still had leaves, so the 5 inches of wet snow weighed down the branches and there were broken limbs everywhere.

Here is my photo taken yesterday...

Here is my submission, I took it last week (they eye picture)..it's kind of Halloweeny since it is of my black Arabian colt, Nykkon..who looks like a Nazgul steed here. Okay..not really, but hey..it's something :D This is me and Nykkon..Nazgul horse of the north..I'm decidedly hobbitty looking these days, I have turned into Kung Fu Panda..lol
