I got a sword!

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

Woo Hoo!!!!

Ten posts! I got a sword under my name!!!!

IGOTASWORD!IGOTASWORD!IGOTASWORD!IGOTASWORD!

Ok, enough of that.

Seriously, I thought the icons under the names were a pretty cheesy idea at first, but the process of getting more of them really is quite addictive.

Blackeagle

That's really great. The icons are really cool and all, but hear this: remember that post number isn't as important as post length. That's why I always like to add the letter "a" 1500 times to the end of every one of my letters- it makes people think I've taken the time to write something long, and it eats more server space that way.

No, seriously.

Welcome on Blackeagle. If you want something really addictive, you ought to step on over to the Prancing Pony...maybe check out Jon Goatleaf's "Middle-Earth Tours" thread.

... and post length is not necessarily an indicator of quality.

Personally, I think there is too much importance placed on post count, and on those icons. I would be happier if no records were kept of this, and no icons were given out; heck, the page would probably even load faster that way.

I put absolutely no importance on post count, or what symbols may happen to be next to my name. If such things are really important to your feeling of self-worth, I suggest you look into getting counseling, or maybe a friend, or maybe get a puppy.

I'm rather proud that I average under 1 post a day here, even though I read many more.

Well, not necessarily, MadMonk. I do agree that quantity is no substitute for quality, and somebody could pop on here right now, posting their very first one and make a point nobody here had made before, thus adding to the total intelligence expressed. That's true, but one thing you can definitely conclude from seeing a wild variety of icons under the name is that this person has been around here for quite a while. So if that person makes a comment about demeanor, rules of engagement, principles of discussion or some arcane reference, you can be pretty sure they have a fairly good grasp of what they're saying.

The moderators here don't boot people here, so far as this ordinary poster knows, and posters do come and go, but if you see someone post with more than a count of about 300, you're probably reading a TORC vet's opinion, one that is being written from the perspective of likely having read a goodly chunk of what's been written here. And I've got to say it: a goodly chunk of what's been written here has been fantastically original and deeply thought-out analysis of Tolkien, his themes, his world, the implications and even real-world referents.

So, yes, on balance, I'd say the list of icons isn't just a pretty little incentive to post wildly in the hopes of being seen to have spent a lot of time at the terminal and hitting this site.

Sorry, I didn't mean to infer anything about Blackeagle, and I'm sorry if it seemed that way. Welcome, Blackeagle! Sorry if my often cynical/bitter side bothered you.

But you have to admit, it does seem like certain people put a bit too much emphasis/importance on the post count, icons, and accompanying title that goes along with their name. (not everyone, just some) I think to spice it up a bit, that the titles should be completely random (from one person to another, and random with the # of posts) and often instulting! Like: "hey, this is my 500th post!... wait a minute... why is my title now 'lord of the jack@sses' when so-and-so got that other, cool title when he/she got to 500?" ... but that might just make people post more low-quality stuff, just to get to the next title/whatever

But now you've gone and made me post twice in one day! I guess I'll have to take tomorrow off, or something. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
It's no offense, really! I hope my normal posts are a good deal more thoughtful and insightful than the one atop this topic. I was just feeling a little spastic and I thought I'd post something fun. After all, isn't that the kind of thing the 'Talk' Forum is for?

Blackeagle

I recall my first blade so long ago. I was so very happy at first then once I had it began to yearn for a shield. In my opinion a person really can't say that the numbers do not at all matter. I agree with Beleg that they show more demeanor. Perhaps it is true it is an indicator of all the time we have on our hands but then again I have had little time lately. If a person is serious about Tolkien and the message board they usually will tend to have much more posts. If a person does have many posts then there is no way they could not be a devot poster. That already tells you about the person. Now I for one also support quality over quantity. But I also want to add that not every post of mine is some Pony Role Playing Quality post. I have had many duds and pointless things. In the long run all I can say is this. Do not judge. If a person has afew bad posts it could be a bad streak. If they have a lot or a little they could be serious either way. Just post and have fun. So I am rusty on posting okay.

Beleg, I agree with most of your post with the exception that the stuff under the name denotes a vet. I have seen people start posting long after me (and I consider myself new) and have triple if not more posts under their belts...so alot of times I'll go check the profile of the person. I'm not saying people are posting needlessly to try to obtain the numbers..I can see how some would really rack up the posts in the Prancing Pony for example (one place I havent felt comfortable in visiting yet)...but new posters may still have a fairly good grasp on what they are saying, perhaps not so much as it obtains to the functionality of this board..but alas, I'm starting to ramble. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hmm I remember when....lol..<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

I was the first to cross the 1000 post mark.I was all excited... I left for about 2 weeks, and WHAM!! all kinds of people were over 1000.Posting alot doesn`t give your opinions any more wieght than a new person.Number of Icons (while kinda nice...)dosn`t really mean much.

The first person to hit 10,000 gets a golden ring(the one ring)as there icon.I think maybe some people are posting to just rack up some numbers.... I will admit I did, when I was nearing the 1000 mark, just to get over the top. But I am seeing new people, with over 2000 posts...... that is a little much....

On the Topic though... I just got a REAL Sword. I ordered a Replica of Stormbringer... Cost me quite the bit of change... but it is an awesome sword.....

OOOoooo, my shiny sense is tingling! A real shiny sword! Too cool, Shadowjack. Will you use it?

I just wanted to add that I think the random title thing is hilarious, MadMonk! I'd love to log on the board and find a new title everyday, most of them ludicrous (I wouldn't want to be saddled with the same title the whole time, I'd shuffle them around randomly at regular intervals)... the more I think about your idea, the more I like it...

Magpie Jen
Once a Queen in Narnia, always a Queen in Narnia!

Magpie Jen
My kind of scum!

Magpie Jen
A Knight who says "Nee"

Magpie Jen
Makes Wormtongue look suave

I could go on all night. Uh-oh. Magpie Jen likes one of my ideas. That can only mean one thing: the men in the white coats, with the straight-jackets are going to come and pay me a vist soon, and take me away for another "vacation". I didn't think I had gone that far off the deep end. Witchwench, I entirely agree with you there (my comment on those lines got a bit buried in my post, I guess). I am as guilty as anybody else here for posting incredible nonsense, outright insanity, and even scurrilous tricks to up my post count.

I've also posted a few items I rather think have proven a bit useful here and there on various topics. So, I'm with Wandering on this: every kind of post can (and usually does) happen here and sense and sensibility can break out with just as much unexpectedness as a new HTML from Adam (okay, well, maybe that can't happen anymore..oh, well), or some new way of teasing Nienna mercilessly for posts on end.

And, one does have to face the fact that one can show up and find nothing about which one wants to talk. I know that's rather a rare experience around here, but it's happened, and will happen again.

Beleg
Shivmaster to the Stars

Well Magpie....

If it really sucked out the souls of those it killed, and fed them to me....... Yep.. I have me a list waiting... but as it is just mundane steel.. Probably not... Just a very nice show piece. The steel is blackend so your shiney sence is off...LOL..<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> the only shiney piece is the Blue crystel set in the pommel. It did come RAZOR sharp though.. so I guess it could have some uses....

The only sword I use is a Katana.I take classes on swordsmanship using oriental weapons.. I think the Katana was the best sword ever made...cutting edge, sharp point... etc...

Ok.. I have lots of icons/swords/shields.. etc... I guess you all have to bow down..lol.....
