The Island Of Misfit Toys

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

<BR><BR>Oh Goodsam .... it will be ok. I'm just pointing out some very relevant things that need to be made clear about those elves.<BR><BR>BUT ..... I didn't say anything about Santa being evil!!!!!! Whoa! What is that all about....<BR><BR>Repeat after me....<BR><BR>A select few of santa's elves = evil<BR>Santa = Good<BR>Santa = Good<BR><BR>Santa is good......now lets get this talk of Satan Claws out of here! You are to go and read "The Polar Express" twelve times and listen to hear the darned bell. I hear the bell....you will too.<BR><BR>A few bad elves does not an evil santa make. (hey, there is a song in that isn't there?)<BR><BR>Tooks...you are in here because you are a hoochie mama, simple as that. And....you, being a lady of class and good character, love Young Frankenstien...one of my favorites too. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><BR><BR>

Ok, so tell my sister Santa's not evil! <i>I</i> know, but you know how older sisters are, they won't listen to a thing their little sisters say, no matter how old they get. <BR><BR>I told a few people of this startling revelation about Santa's elves, and all I got out of it was a couple of weird looks. I guess no one really wants to delve into the deeper meanings of Rudolph. I say they're snobs.<BR><BR>Anywho, I'll go with the gliding theory. It's much safer for my sanity <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

GW, this is my FAVORITE Christmas special! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I believe that the magic of Christmas was able to make the bird fly. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> (does that help GoodSam?) <BR><BR>Durin, I swear a few years ago, they DID show the "Extended" Edition on TV. I think my parents taped it, but I STILL haven't watched it. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> <BR><BR>

<i> Tooks...you are in here because you are a hoochie mama, simple as that.</i><BR><BR><BR>This is no mere hoochie mama.<BR><BR>This is a hootchie kootchie mama, and you owe her your……..your……..hmmmm….....the analogy seems to break down here.<BR><BR>Must re-think. <BR><BR><BR>I just bought a copy of ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ on Ebay. I’m talking the ORIGINAL animated one narrated by the great Boris Karloff!!! The only one capable of satisfying a Dr. Seuss purist such as myself. They never show it on network TV any more, and I MUST see it. (in case you are wondering, I don’t have cable).<BR>

My son and I watched the Grinch last night, and he started telling me things all about how the Grinch was raised by Whos and all that. I was confused thinking that’s not on the show or in the book. I realized he was referring to that other movie. I tried to explain how much better the animated cartoon (done by Chuck Jones of Warner Bros fame) was, but he said he liked both. Now the cartoon is word-for-word adaptation of the book, while the movie changes things like having elves present in Whoville, doing way with the Scouring, and making Cindyloo Who do the flight to the ford. Wait a second I think I am mixing things up.<BR><BR>Anyway I realized last night that I was more of a Dr. Seuss purist then I am a Tolkien purist. What they did to the Grinch movie bothers me more then anything done in Lord of the Rings, except maybe Faramir I am getting more forgiving about that.<BR><BR>We don’t have cable either …. satellite is the way to go with Tivo.<BR>

<BR><BR>That’s It !! They weren’t the real elves…they were the minions of Satan Claws himself throwing that poor misfit swimming (and might I add FLIGHTLESS) bird to his death somewhere over Finland. Just go back to the moment of the crime…the “elf” takes the bird in one hand and grabs the umbrella…looks at bird…looks at umbrella…tosses bird into Finnish oblivion…I knew that elf with the glasses was trouble…I knew it all along !! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Looky there.....my husband posted here a year ago. :) Man this was a bear to find!

OK people....my entire family (minus me, as I had to watch LOST) just saw this silly show again and the consensus was.......

THE ELF is a MURDERER. My sweet children just took incredible delight in re-enacting the whole sordid scene.....he passes the umbrella to the parrot (WHO CAN'T FLY!) and then takes it away......and tosses the poor thing to his death. I am somewhat disturbed at the glee my kids had in relating this to me....but hey, they are my kids, what can I expect.

Er..... I was watching LOST too.

....looks about guiltily.....

edited to add:

You know, LOST is sorta like an Island of Misfits.
Hmmmm..... I may be on to something here.....

...retires to ponder this development...

you know I have not yet wandered into this phenomenom called Lost.

Gilmore Girls are humiliating enough.

GW, I still get a giggle every time I think of that poor bird being thrown to the mercy of the waves and your horrification..

I'm sorry. I can't help it :D

A bird that can't fly? I guess Rankin-Bass never heard of penguins and ostriches. :?

Hey! That kinda reminds me of the episode of WKRP in Cincinnati where Les Nessman throws a bunch of turkeys out of a helicopter...with disastrous results.

Anybody want a Charlie in the box? :D

Now wait a minute!! Didn't the elf throw out a plane that couldn't fly?

Could that be the plane that crashed on the island in LOST????

Yes... it could be!!! I think I have solved the mystery!!!!

Either that, I need to get a second cup of coffee.
:P

EDIT: Wait. What was the matter with the plane? Did it have square wheels? Or was that something else? See, I shoulda watched Rudolph last night instead of LOST.

Oh Tooks.....I am so glad this has you thinking....very glad. Your a genuis. :D
Yes, I agree.....we can take this someplace. Now, on LOST, didn't they shoot a polar bear? Well, I think that was definitely a misfit....a polar bear on a tropical Island? Yup, I think that as this series moves on....they will incorporate the Island of Misfit Toys into it very nicely. I'm sure that is where the writers are heading.....yup. And that one chick is going to have her baby soon.....where are they going to get their toys for the goo? Hmmmm....

Oh...and the train had square wheels....not sure what was wrong with the plane.

Elwe Goldwing.....your signature picture is just hilarious! I love the Grinch.

Spirit....yes, tell everyone.....I think people should know the truth about some of these elves. :)

Harvestar....keep hoping....but I think the bird is just....dead.

Ha! Lookee what I found here..... Rudolph Q&A.

"Here's a question that has puzzled me and perhaps you can find the answer. On the island we learn that one of the toys is a bird that can't fly--he swims. But at the end, one of the elves grabs the bird, looks at the umbrella that the other toys have received to ease their descent, and shoves the bird out without it, presumably to certain death, squashed on a rooftop.

"Was this an oversight, or bit of dark humor interjected for the amusement of people like me who spend too much time analyzing things? In either case, it does make me laugh each year."

Here is the response:
RICK REPLIES:
If you look hard, the misfit bird appears to be making a flying motion which leads the viewer (at least myself) to believe that the bird always could fly ala THE WIZARD OF OZ. OZ was, of course, fresh on the minds of Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass after the premiere of their first GE Special in early 1964 called RETURN TO OZ. I believe the song lyric goes "Oz never did give nothing to the Tinman, that he didn't already have."

Umm... still can't remember the plane's problem. Will keep looking...

This thread came to mind as I watched Rudolph with my youngest last night. If Tooks hadn't dug it up, I would've.

I'm still wierded out about the masochistic elf in Santa's sleigh. I hope Santa fired him.
