Parm's Pleasant Pondering Place: Welcome, Summer!

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

This Day is Ever Summer

Postby prmiller » Tue Jul 10, 2018 12:40 pm

With friends the days are summer,
all fresh and cooling green;
there are both shade and sunshine,
and wonders to be seen.
My time at TORC is summer,
with joys that are sublime;
though I shall bless the autumn
as well as wintertime.
What fullness come with summer,
as needful storms appear,
Content I feel in summer,
when I am with you here.

Blessings,
Parm :)

Christmas joys to all

Postby prmiller » Tue Dec 25, 2018 2:54 am

The time is well-past midnight,
thus Christmastide is here,
I shall awake in daylight,
to share in Christmas cheer.
For those who wake find this
my kindest thoughts to you,
and to this place and aegis,
a welcome word or two.
May you enjoy the gladness
that I have hoped to leave,
to find no trace of sadness,
nor cause to ache or grieve,
for it is my intention,
to leave my Christmas prayer,
in rhymes of my invention
my thoughts to show I care.
Let all the joy around you,
enwrap your heart with bliss,
and as a bard of Eru,
leave hug and smile and kiss.

Blessings,
Parm :)

The Quilt of Life

The threads of time pierce in and through
the memories we gather in,
each piece, distinctive from the rest,
evokes a sigh, a tear, a grin.
I have, this year, such memories,
that are as flowers, multi-hued.
Thus, when I seem my quilt of life,
what comes to mind when it is viewed?
I find a scent wafts through my mind,
I may hear music, feel the the rain,
taste the spices from a meal,
or touch the nettles from some pain.
The quilt is precious, but to me,
it has a power I hold true,
it gives me moments when my heart
can spend some time with friends I knew.

Blessings,
Parm :-)

The Journey

Postby prmiller » Sat Mar 23, 2019 10:25 am

Imagine then, that three-score pounds,
and then add ten, have left my frame,
I have good friends to thank for this,
(and one would blush to see his name),
but thanks to them, my less is more,
less strain, less, stress, more strength and speed,
less girth, less weight, but better heft,
farewell to foods I do not need.
Though I have said goodbye to those
who helped me travel paths unknown,
who need to leave me, for their paths
are roads they need to tread alone,
I honour them within this rhyme,
a poem I can send to bless,
for they have helped me love life more,
by helping me embrace much less.

Blessings,
Parm :-)

The Mother-Heart

Look not to find a mother-heart
in pillared halls of arms and shields,
in portraits left as legacies,
for stellar skills in varied fields.
Look not to bronze nor figured stone,
to honour those who care and keep
the whispered secret, cherished dream,
from nightmares comfort those who sleep.
The mother-heart is well acclaimed,
'tis lauded boldly throughout time,
but I shall join my voice with those
who say, "Amen" throughout this rhyme.

Blessings,
Parm :-)

Despite all Snow and Rain

Postby prmiller » Thu Jun 20, 2019 8:31 am

The forecast calls for snow and rain,
the sky is overcast,
but one thing true of summer's heat,
the snow will never last.
Despite all snow and freezing rain,
the callous sleet that stings,
the flowers bloom, fruit ripens well,
and songs grace darting wings.
The moisture blesses farm and field,
the skiers have their day,
but summer shall begin its reign
and warmth shall bless my way.

Blessings,
Parm :)

Intrusion pardoned,
Compliment accepted.

The Absence of Friends

Much like a train that should arrive,
a bus we need at 9:08,
there is a sense of not-quite-right
when ,unlike wizards, friends are late...
or worse, like me, get drained by life,
and find that naps that turn to sleep,
are our reward for endless toil,
to dream in woods, still, dark, and deep.
We miss the rhythms friends create,
the quip that quickly follows post,
but more than this, the fellowship,
the being-here we miss the most.
I carry names deep in my soul,
and think of them when drinking tea,
when raking leaves or playing ball,
then sigh, give thanks, that blessed they'll be.
So, absent friends, who shall not read,
this tribute here, until you come,
know well how you are welcome here,
without a calling pipe or drum.

Blessings,
Parm :-)

Awed by Storms

Postby prmiller » Wed Aug 07, 2019 3:09 pm

To think that air, that gentle breath which sings,
could swirl with might that homes are ripped and torn,
the puff that puts out candles, gives kites wings,
leaves plains grass-bare like sheep-kind newly shorn.
Such breath, that pipes with lullabies caress,
and soups, all piping hot are swiftly cooled.
With breath-born joy we cheer and gladly bless,
but calming nature's storms showed how Christ ruled.
I may be called to pray and quell a gale,
for signs and wonders, use the Spirit's Wind,
but on my own? I know that I shall fail,
and make a pious heart more than chagrined.
So let me be in awe of stormy might,
and know they too shall pass like joyless night.

Blessings,
Parm :)

The Wonder of a Seed

Postby prmiller » Wed Aug 07, 2019 3:24 pm

Held in my hand
smaller than a period,
heavier than river-washed stone,
wrinkled like aged skin
wrapping newborn promises
useless
until
earthen shrouds wrap up
each sign of life
and we
watching wide-eyed
think our hopes of life
lie swallowed up by
greedy ground.
Death, too, thought this,
when Eden's Promised Seed
was entombed
stony shrouds
tuck way all hope
of restored life.
But we
wide-eyed see stone
like soil,
split wide by the seed-life
bursting forth
into day
into dawn
farmers rejoice
hallelujah
for the wonder of
earth-seed life
followers rejoice
hallelujah
for the wonder of
heaven-seed life.

Blessings,
Parm :-)

I like the parallel. Straight out of John 12:24. Beautifully expressed. I like the line “heavier than a river-washed stone.” Good gravitas there. Thanks!
