I drank a latte
Pumpkin spice I think it was
How I love autumn.

The Dreaded Journal 26

Postby prmiller » Wed Oct 07, 2015 4:09 pm

In our English Language Foundations program
ELF for short
(can you see the fun about ready to happen already?)
our students write,
among other things,
26 prescribed journal entries...
and as they write them
from 1 to 25
all is sunshine,
roses,
buttercups,
picnics along the banks
of an easy-going river
for while there is
feedback,
suggestions,
abjurations
from students
to renounce
lazy writing habits
there is no harm
no foul
lots of risk, little
grade-point-average danger
until...
the sun rises on
that day
Journal 26 Day
for
on that day
it
Journal 26
is graded
and
etched in stone
like the laws of the Medes and Persians
no tutor shall give aim
whether by
suggestion, hints,
wink, nod, cough, nudge
or sigh
anything
any means
by which
a student shall change
wrong to right
faulty to faultless
pitted to pristine
Behold...
clouds roll into
the learning hub
thunder, rain...
well more like curses and tears
some requests for help are surreptitious
Mr. M...I have this sentence, and...
Is it for Journal 26
yes
well, enjoy writing...and see what happens.
grrrr
Mr. M...should I be using present perfect here
Is it for Journal 26
y...e...s....
ah, I see...if you feel confident about it, send it on...
(guttural growl)
Mr. M...?
Journal 26?
...silence...
heads fall to chests
it is, happily, Wednesday...
we still have Friday
and the sun will come out
(oh, please let it come out!)
I can hear Annie singing...
"A- Day- From... To-mor-row
Yes, Fri-day is com-ing...
it's on-ly two days...a...waaaaay!"
(I wish it were today.)

What happened to your autumn poem?

I love autumn, too. :) We have less pumpkin-based drinks over here, though. :D

Mrs. Parm and I looked at it and thought it was...well,
not all that kind.
Sometimes I write things and upon second thought
I think they are best removed...hence the removal.

I still think autumn is a great word...the poem, I fear, was not
a good thing to write.

My apologies...
but please, enjoy the latte!

Crunch Time

Postby prmiller » Thu Oct 08, 2015 3:05 pm

Oh, those leaves! those brilliant leaves!
Strewn on lawns and filling eaves,
draw out memories sublime:
I inward shout, "It's crunching time!"
Some connoisseurs (I know a few)
will any softer crunch eschew,
hunting for a louder sound,
grinding leaves on harder ground.
I fear I do not have such skill
to find those leaves whose crunchings fill
the crisp and sunny air with noise
that summons up my autumn joys.
No, I, with sheer abandon race
to piles of leaves most anyplace
and crunch away with childlike glee
enjoying this, my autumn spree!

Blessings,
Parm :)
...and Mrs. Parm liked this one, too.
Thank you, dear.
Now celebrating 28 years of sharing
tea and toast, highs and lows,
ins and outs, rice and potatoes...
my friend, my sweetheart-- still,
My Mrs. Parm.

Ah, I see. Yes, I guess I can see your point.

Perhaps you just need to try again. ;)

It is a great word, though, "autumn". :)

Edited to add after you've posted: Huzzah! I love that one. :) And congratulations to you and Mrs Parm. :) :yippie:

Remembering Thanksgiving

Postby prmiller » Fri Oct 09, 2015 2:49 pm

In Canada, as many know,
before the fields are decked in snow,
we pause, before enjoying feasts,
to give our thanks for grains and beasts,
for water, shelter, freedom, food--
we pause to voice our gratitude.
Each day I work with varied sorts
who entered in from varied ports
and oh! The stories that I hear
that never fail to draw a tear,
remind me of the blessings bought
from blood and sweat, with much...or not.
Despite the poverty and pain
the beating hail, the flooding rain,
the pests and pestilence endured,
that wealth and health may be secured,
this land, that day, to pray and bless
the wonders of much fruitfulness.
I am most glad for living here,
and give great thanks, each day, each year.

Blessings,
Parm :)

Look! 2016!

Postby prmiller » Fri Jan 08, 2016 2:23 pm

Happy New Year,
to each one and all,
though fewer footsteps
roam down each hall;
may those you love
and treasure best
join you here
for play and rest.

Blessings in 2016

Three updates:
1) Becoming a grandparent a second time;
first daughter having a child very soon.
2) Given a much long contract than having 4 eight-week cycles.
3) Have "new digs" for tutoring, our previous language labs
turned into tutoring centre called "The Learning Hub."

Yes, I am quite busy; no, I shall not forget you; yes, I shall come
as often as I am able.

Blessings and blessings,
Parm :)

Happy New Year PARM and Mrs. PARM!! Congratulations on grandbaby number 2! How special!! My two grandkids are now both teenagers, how the time flies!!

Sounds like your classes are going well and that they are loving having you since you got a longer term and new classrooms. You are still in our prayers and thoughts continually!Sorry it took me a few days to get here to see your post, I was off taking care of my mother who was in the hospital. We finally got her home last Wednesday but I stayed with her continually till Friday evening when my sister came home from work and I finally got to come home to my hubby and Furbaby China! I was gone for a whole week and sure am glad to be back and have internet again.

May your New Year be Blessed in more ways then you can count!!!

Living with Choices

Postby prmiller » Thu Feb 18, 2016 5:08 pm

Watch a movie with my wife,
sharpen pencils with my knife;
wash the dishes after ten,
think of something deep to pen;
play a game with eager son,
check to see if news is done,
send a friend a get-well box,
re-arrange my pens and socks...
choices! Nudged from here to there.
Some I need to show I care.
Others catch me well off-guard,
and I hit life's mat...and hard!
Then, a serendipity,
when a choice works well for me.
Thus I come because I can,
one step in...and how I ran!
What a lovely resting space...
TORC and friends! I love this place!

Blessings,
Parm :)

Fixing up the Place

Postby prmiller » Wed Aug 17, 2016 9:16 am

Five years have passed since we arrived
near riverbanks of distant youth;
weary, bleary, full of griefs,
working through each bitter truth;
now enjoying walks and talks,
laughing more and crying less,
building brand-new friendships here,
glad for older ones that bless.
Now I have more strength to write
time has brought a healing balm,
poems ripple through my soul,
while I savour prairie's calm.
Windows shuttered open wide,
cobwebbed corners now are clean,
flagstones near the hearth are washed
brown-leaved trellises now green.
Flowers bloom and ovens bake,
all is rubbed and scrubbed to gleam,
kegs of meaded joys await
those who share a tale or dream.
Find your way back to this door,
Bring your mugs and chalices,
Find a chair, some bread and cheese,
and sing of heroes saving palaces.

Welcome, welcome, welcome,
Parm is in the house.
:)

The World is Here

Postby prmiller » Wed Aug 17, 2016 9:39 am

I work where lips and tongues learn sounds
Canadians are trained to hear,
I sit and listen to the tales
of hopeful dreams replacing fear.
I am embraced and kissed and loved,
bear-hugged by tall and brawny lads,
laughing with bewildered youth,
guiding brand new mums and dads.
Culture chats of varied sorts,
talk me back millennia;
help me understand the sorrows borne,
bouts of schizophrenia;
angry tales of bigotry,
verbal jousts with "less-informed,"
opportunities to heal
hearts that politics deformed.
May I help their worlds, I pray!
The World comes in day after day.

Honoured,
Parm :)

My Neck of the Woods

Postby prmiller » Thu Aug 18, 2016 6:57 pm

Hi, Calma!
Ah...my neck of the woods,
for good or ill,
has shown me more goods
our larder to fill;
Muffets and Shreddies,
Coffees and teas,
Kraft foods (those teddies!)
mushrooms and peas.
My part of the world
has Purdy's and Tim's,
food from the world
to suit most foodies' whims.
I like where I live,
and most folk here do,
the snow I'll forgive--
if I can barbecue.

Summer...Alberta style

Postby prmiller » Thu Aug 18, 2016 7:56 pm

Glacier lakes trim inspiring peaks,
Trout flash and dash along swift mountain creeks.
Fields of canola swathe groves of great trees,
yellows and greens, paint the hillsides one sees.
Places where dinosaurs walked, swam or flew,
bones deep in valleys 'neath skies bright and blue
Tall prairie grasses with rich floral hues,
Rivers, long-winding, inviting canoes,
Wildlife at twilight that still can enthrall.
This is Alberta...and I love it all.

How old, Parm, are you? I am 62!

Postby prmiller » Thu Aug 25, 2016 3:39 pm

Oh, yes, I love birthdays,
especially mine,
with cake and some candles,
(and ice cream is fine!).
To laugh and remember,
to sing and take time
to listen to stories
with Nashian rhyme.
Indeed, I love birthdays,
but not just for gifts,
but for friends who are there...
how each memory lifts!
So should I have birthdays
(I look for lots more),
brings stories and poems
should you grace my door.

Blessings,
Parm :)

The day comes but once a year.
To most it brings much cheer.
With presents and cake
That loved ones make
Time to sing Happy Birthday loud and clear!

Happy Birthday!

On Being Happy Birthday-ed

Postby prmiller » Sat Aug 27, 2016 8:22 pm

I love the songs, the cakes, the noise,
the games, the gifts (I still love toys!)
and all the memories they bring,
that comes from Happy-Birthday-ing.
Sometimes the parties friends create
become the stuff of legends great;
the gift may break or fail or fade,
but one thing that each gift conveyed
was heartfelt love, affections deep,
and that a heart can always keep.
For all your warmth in rhymes you leave,
you make TORC great: that I believe!

Thank you, lovely friends,
Parm :)

Upon Feeling Autumn Come

Postby prmiller » Sat Sep 10, 2016 6:59 pm

While money may not grow on trees,
bright golden joys enwrap its boughs;
some blaze with fiery orange or reds--
a Pentecost above our heads.
Mild scents of autumn twilight fill,
Some sweatered couples stroll and sigh
at geese that call a brief farewell,
with signatures on sunset sky.
My candles are more swiftly lit
in places graced with potpourri,
while leafy wreaths appear on doors
in colours of fall's legacy.
My joy and melancholy blend
as savoury and sharp enhance
this feast for seasons come once more:
though I must sit, my soul shall dance!

Blessings,
Parm :)
