Parm's Pleasant Pondering Place at TORC: Ever Summer!

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

Parm, what a dreadful thing. A shame it often takes such an awful event these days for people to allow others in - and to remember to show love and care themselves.

I hope your family and church can hold out God's love and forgiveness at such a crucial time

One Month Ago Seems Ever Near...Yet Far

Postby prmiller » Fri May 16, 2014 11:30 am

One month ago, five candled souls,
were snuffed by unknown rage and pain,
we who looked on, saw nothing wrong,
until we stopped...and looked again.
A young man flees, police are called,
a sparking cry ignites far more...
one month ago, all was at peace--
till death strode in our neighbour's door.
We all have wept our instant tears,
have prayed our prayers for soothing calm,
but now we need a deeper strength,
and will forgiveness be that balm?
New grass appears where there was snow,
our barren trees are fresh with green,
the world is full of life and youth,
but five young lives shall not be seen.
Indeed, the world is full of crimes!
Thousands die as time tramps on!
This does not change the bane of death...
thus we look hard to see That Dawn
when none shall fear, no soul shall die,
no sickness blight, nor age make dim
the once keen mind or skillful eye.
Oh haste, haste, haste that blesséd day,
when pain and sorrow, grief and death,
shall be no more, and in their place...
such beauty! in a single breath!

Hoping, ever hoping;
Looking, always looking,
Parm :)

...and the trial soon begins

Postby prmiller » Mon May 26, 2014 10:11 pm

The young man who was charged with the deaths of five youths
is fit to stand trial...and it will be an event unlike any other.
May wisdom, grace, and justice prevail.
...oh, yes, may these great gifts prevail.

I ache for the students
who look emptied of all
passion
filled with
angry
raw
questions
stinging the skin of heaven
there shall be a trial
shall there be justice
shall there be grace
shall there be wisdom
shall good come
out of evil
these are the questions
that fall as hailstones
on the grieving gardens
of our placid communities
hammering
lilac lavender
tulip crimson
daffodil yellow
into grey pulp
Oh Great Gold of Heaven
Shine
that we may find life again
love again
hope again
seeing colour
and rejoicing
in that true blue dream of a sky
and all that is green
alive
and
yes!

Hugging my aching students,
Parm :)
...with much love to e.e. cummings
and how he makes me love
poetry...and words
so deeply, richly
dyed
into
our skins.
I love the worldI am in...

New Experiences in My Life

Postby prmiller » Sun Jun 01, 2014 8:55 pm

Beginning from tomorrow, June 2, I am being coached and prepared
to take on a much bigger responsibility in our English Language Foundations
program at SAIT Polytechnic. A few days ago, I was asked to be part of
a photo-shoot to develop a campaign to promote something called
Student Support Services. Working alongside of the E.L.F. Manager,
(don't you love the acronym?) I will be developing resources and an
environment for five to six different areas of student growth:
1) Career preparedness; 2) Cross-cultural awareness;
3) Campus culture awareness; 4) Academic remediation;
5) Language skills remediation; and 6) Life skills (this name will change,
but this is the working concept: helping students learn about banking,
transit use, student insurance opportunities, and on it goes). All of this
came from the day-to-day work I did to take the fledgling tutoring program
and create remedial methodologies that are starting to help students.
Bottom line: Boy, am I going to be busy!

My dear friends at TORC...you will not have lost me;
TORC will not have lost me, but I will be in and out as best as I am able.
This place has been an important creative outlet, and I do not want to let that go.

I look forward to spending my spare moments here, but I am not anywhere near
retiring or slowing down for awhile. Life, at least for me, is certainly picking up
the pace. I can only hope that as I am now entering my 60s, that I will have the
vim and vigour for posting as well as for life.

Blessings on you all!
:)

Spend it with Mrs. Parm before you crawl yourself in here.

Luck to you, friend.

What a delightful surprise!

The faucets gladly gush and and fill
some handy kettle primed for tea,
the biscuits left for, "special guests",
fill china plates most daintily.
Then out I come, with Mrs. Parm,
to welcome you within our walls--
for should not tea and other treats
be de rigueur for all our halls?
There...that's a lovely chair to find,
all cushioned with a quilted throw,
or try the rocking chair a bit,
just feel at home, and let us know
how we can welcome you aright...
a treasured star to bless the night.

Enjoy your day,
Parm :)

From you, a wordsmith of renown, my heart is man-in-the-moon full

Renown:
ORIGIN Middle English: from Anglo-Norman French renoun,
from Old French renomer ‘make famous,’
from re- (expressing intensive force) >> Did you notice the "intensive" tidbit?
+ nomer ‘to name,’ from Latin nominare .

Yes! May your name echo within our halls,
wrapped in the music of joy and praise;
Yes! may your presence ever bless--
form legacies of years from days.

Blessings,
Parm

Postby prmiller » Tue Jun 24, 2014 10:06 am

Something completely different from my ESL students:

One of them brought a whimsical "connections" piece.
One thing leads to another, as in "for want of a nail, the shoe was lost...
for want of the battle the kingdom was lost, all for the want of a nail."

Here is my student's submission. I hope it gives you a little grin as it did me.
Thank you "Ahmed"!

For want of a pen, no notes were written;
for want of the notes, no study was done;
for want of study, a test was failed,
for want of the test, the course was not completed,
for lack of a course, the program was discontinued,
for lack of a program, no diploma was given,
for lack of a diploma, no career was possible,
for lack of a career, no money came in,
for lack of money, no food could be bought,
for lack of food, how your handsomeness failed you,
for lack of handsomeness, you could attract no sweetheart,
for lack of a sweetheart, no marriage was possible,
for lack of marriage, no children could be expected,
for lack of children, there could not be much companionship,
for lack of companionship, there could be no encouragement,
for lack of encouragement, there could be no health,
for lack of health, there could be no life...and all is lost.
Lesson: Don't lose your pen!

And that my dear ones, ends our fable for today.
(...and I'm hanging on to my pens!)
Enjoy your day...and your pens,
Parm :)

Journey out, Journey in

So here is the day that my heart knew was coming,
The change from time to another...seems numbing.
For out of the teens, then the twenties, beyond...
I have left behind scrapbooks of thoughts that are fond.
Through the thirties, the forties...soon five decades passed,
Now what needs discarding? Yes, what things will last?
This journey I trod made of fifty full years,
Has brought with it hopes and those typical fears:
How then shall I live? What then shall I do?
Will all of these poems much matter to you?
My peregrination through this sixtieth year
Coaxes me in to write some poem here.
Not all will fathom this motive that spurs
Nor grasp every qualm that I find that occurs
When I take the time to enjoy one more breath
To think more of life and not fixate on death.
Each day that comes in, then, thus given to God,
Will nudge me well forward as onward I plod.
So, hooray for some time I can celebrate, too
For living life's journey, being faithful and true.

Onward to August!

The Twelve Years of TORC

Postby prmiller » Wed Jul 09, 2014 6:44 pm

My memory is gently nudged
with note-like hints, regarding twelve,
of leaping lords and milking maids
and rings of gold that miners delve.
Twelve Years of TORC! I look...'tis true!
This month, this day to celebrate.
The first few posts? With awkwardness,
then accolades felicitate:
"Lighthouse of the Boards" I'm called,
a symbol I have gladly used,
Red Pencil, Starbrow, then one year
a verb appears...I was bemused:
"Be Parmed" I learn, is how one feels
when I, with poetry, bring cheer,
and like the dawn proclaiming day,
my role among you shines most clear...
I am the one you count upon
to fill the skies with sparkling praise,
cause earthquakes of delight to break,
bring fulsome gladness to your days.
In truth, like rice, my head bows low,
filled full by all your thankful hearts,
and should my name beyond here go,
know this: you honed poetic arts.
Thus should great accolades pour in,
get wet with all the joy they bring,
and should the world with gladness shout,
my poems, with your notes, they sing.
Thus twelve full years seem swiftly gone,
and I am here, soon sixty...too!
My happiness in life has grown
from goodness given here...by you!

Blessings to you all,
Parm :)

Hi Parm!!! :hihi:

I missed your torciversary!!!! :(

Here's a poem to make up for it....

There was a Torcer called Parm
Who never sounded alarm
He was calm and serene
And never ate beans
Except from the local farm.

For that? In here? Oh, never fear!
There is at all times time for cheer!
Now find a sparkler and at night
Spark your joys with splinting light!
I am most glad winds blew me in,
And I watched lovely things begin!

Blessings..ever,
Parm :)

I'm a bit late I'm afraid....as usual.

But there you were, with blessings on,
a lovely gift, as night needs dawn,
as moons need stars and roses rain.
Thank you, thank you once again!

Shocked to discover I could read 7000 posts very soon!

Coming to Another Fork in the Road

Postby prmiller » Tue Jul 22, 2014 7:21 am

Why do divergent paths appear again
when I was all content with this road trod?
I know the words I'd hear should I complain;
I recognize the foolishness of chiding God.
So here I sit alone with Book and pen
with journals to review and hold my quips;
with further sheepishness I notice then
my pen takes over from my whining lips.
The No is ev'ry bit as hard as Yes;
the changes ev'ry bit as big as suns,
what rushes in to keep me from more foolishness,
is reading from that Book which stuns
and knocks some sense into my flapping soul
that life is for the journey...not the goal.

Being guided,
Parm :)
