The Emporium - We are sparkly vampires!!!

Just as Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet at The Bird and the Baby, come in here to converse about whatever might be on your mind. This is the place for all off-topic conversation.

Okay well just making sure. :P You might still want to check with STA Travel, which is where I bought my tickets to England last semester. The good thing about their site is that they automatically add the taxes, which usually amount to just as much or more than the ticket itself.   They have some good deals on flights (under $900), if your schedule is flexible.

Unless I'm not able to attend school next semester, September-October probably won't be good for me, but we'll see. :)

$1,178? Good grief that's expensive. Where are you flying out of and into?

My flight from New York to Amsterdam via Dublin was only $635. Granted, that was in the winter....My May/June Netherlands flights were $685 and $700-something the other years.

Of course you're over west coast side, aren't you? Still...you should be able to do a bit better than that.

StudentUniverse.com is a reasonable place to check out as well, though usually I don't see prices as good on their site as through Kayak. They also deal in reduced train fares for students/young people so that might be useful to you.

Generally the best hunting time for flights is around 3 months in advance...but it's a bit harder to follow the market these days. All depends on fuel price at any given time. And sales being promoted by the airlines.

Random find: $999 return trip to Dublin from Seattle Sept. 19th to Oct. 17th. Granted, Dublin isn't UK...but so close, and would also be a lovely place to visit. ;)

Speaking of all this, I do have a question that I think you can answer more knowledgeably, Rune. When I was in the UK I only visited Wales, England, and Scotland. My bf seems to think that my passport alone wouldn't be enough - that I would need some kind of special visa in order to go to Ireland or any other European countries. Is this true? :(

Nooooooo, not as a US citizen. The only thing rules affect us in is how long we can stay in a given country. Three months is typical without further documentation (especially for countries that participate in our Visa Waiver Program here in the states) besides your passport and they may want to see proof of your return journey....I always have my booking information on hand in case they want to see it, sometimes hand it tucked in my passport by default.

Didn't need anything special when I was in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France or Italy. ;)

I'm going to Ireland too. I've been searching for flights out of Spokane, which is the closest large airport to me. Seattle is a five hour drive.

Yeah, if I was flying out of New York of course it would be way cheaper. :P It's WAY closer.

Also those one week return trips are cheaper. I'm staying for a month or more.

Elfy, any country in the UK or UN don't require a Visa from US citizens. Just a passport. I picked Sept-Oct because it's a lot cheaper to fly then. I was planning on July before that, but that's the peak month. :( It's still really up in the air though.

Well, I did search for four weeks...not just one.

How aboooooout....Spokane to Rome (outer airport, FCO/Fiumicino) for $1093!

Or $1082 to Brussels!

9/12 to 10/24 (43 days)

Gah. My travel bug is biting. Too bad I don't have monies. :P

*BUUUUUMP* :D

I was just in the Latte Lounge a moment ago, which no one had posted in for five months or so.. and of course, when I find the Emporium, it's been over six months since anyone has visited (well, aside from the lurking types.. which includes myself). ;) :P

Where is everyone?

Hey, wait a minute, Andu! I'm an Elf.. I don't sparkle! I may shimmer and glow a bit.. but I think it's much more pleasant. And currently, I don't see anyone else around.. so I think you're safe from the sparkly vampires, at least for the time being. ;) :P

The more things change the more they stay the same? That about sums it up Ugluk. ;)

My tech was in Kennewick a few weeks ago, made me think of ya. Good to see you again.

For reasons that escape me, I feel like we should revive this thread. I miss people, like Luthy, Elfy, Elsha, Birdy, BT, and many others who I cannot name for fear of leaving them off a list and then finding myself in the unfortunate position of not being able to name everyone while simultaneously being worried about accidentally leaving someone important off the list.

I guess my point is people should post more.

The Emporium! It's nice to see the thread on the first page again. Good times. Even though...isn't it aboot time to revive the thread? I don't know what the typical page count of threads are these days. After all, The Hobbit's coming out in a month! If things are ever going to pick up it should be now. :horse:

Wow, I haven't seen The Emporium on the first page in ages! It's been about a year since I last posted in here!

ELFY!! :D I haven't seen you in ages, either! How've you been?

Also, I completely agree, if ever there were a time to revive the thread, it should be now! I'm so excited for The Hobbit next month! :horse:

TORC looks really.....different.

It's weird, I still don't think the fact that The Hobbit is coming out has really sunk in yet. It's The Hobbit. THE HOBBIT!

I'm seriously looking forward to it, but at the same time I don't feel wild excitement and anticipation. I'm guessing this is probably due to self-loathing and bitterness.

Hey Lin! I've been good, I'm in England now with my fiance. :D It's not exciting as it sounds though, as he has no time off work, so my days mainly consist of cleaning something and playing Lord of the Rings Online. We're planning a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon this weekend, and even though we've been there several times already, I've since discovered that there's a Harry Potter-esque cafe there called the Creaky Cauldron that sells butterbeer and wands and the like. I'm perfectly aware that the place is just cashing in the HP hype, but I just think it could be a different experience. Anyway we'll see. And how have you been??

Agreed that TORC looks different, but just like the last few site renovations, I'll probably forget what it looked like before in no time. As for The Hobbit, I know that it hasn't really sunk in that I'll be seeing it in a month. For the longest time I really believed that it would never happen. I honestly don't think it'll really hit me until I'm sitting in the theater and the opening credits start rolling, and Howard Shore's music smacks me across the face like a beautiful waterfall of ecstasy.

I wonder what the chances are of PJ making The Silmarillion...?

Elfy!! There is my sparkly little English vampire!! Talking all Harry Potter on us!! I hope you enjoy the Creaky Cauldron *may I roll the eyes now?* Actually I wouldn't be able to resist either. :D I wish you and the fiance could see more of each other!! :D Are you home for Christmas? Miss you.

:hihi: to Lin and Ugluk and Valandil!! :hihi:

The Hobbit. I am totally into it already. I think about it daily actually. My calendar has the date circled twice in yellow and orange!! :D Also making a special day of it with my sister for the movie at the Saturday matinee at noon and then out for a lovely early supper to discuss it all. (I am half thinking that after the early supper we should go back and see it again) :D

I love the softness of the new boards. There are still some features missing a bit, but I should think that Jonathan will sort it all out soon enough.

Good to see the thread up again!! (where is Elsha, Luthy, BT and Sil?)

:hihi:

Hey rwhen! Sparkly English vampire? Is the vampire part on account of my soul-sucking nature? ;) And yes, I'll be home for Christmas. I'm going to missing Thanksgiving though. :( Probably a good thing in the long run. <_<

That sounds like a good plan for the Hobbit day! I'd love to see it twice the same day, but my fiance already thinks I'm insane for wanting to see the same movie more than once, let alone twice in one day. I don't know about Elsha, Luthy, or Sil, but I'd be willing to bet BT is probably with Ro.
