Just to be clear, the speed was the sword, the strength is Paul's; as mentioned in his bio (perhaps augmented somewhat by the sword. I'm not sure if it does that). Also, Paul's decision not to kill in this instance is pure character development. Personally I would have liked nothing better than take some names, but it just didn't feel right for this character with his lovable naïveté and angst to do so.
