Role Play 101

Pull out your pack and head on down to the Prancing Pony for some great Role Playing (try to stay in character)!

Postby erinhue » Thu Jul 18, 2002 8:50 pm

folks get so hung up on the writing that they seem to forget the Play in Role Play. Have fun with it folks, live another life in another place and do things you most likely never will in real life It's "play pretend" all over again. That is the spirit behind RPing here at TORC. The rest will come if you are earnest in the desire it is true, the more you write the better you get. Now mix that with your wildest imaginings and your ready to strap on that sword and buckle a swash with the best of them<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

A stranger wanders into the classroom. Cloaked and hooded in forest green and gray, noone can see the impressed smile that crosses her face. She draws her hood back and reveals her strikingly pale, creamy skin, large brown eyes, and long, deep-brown hair. She smiles but does not speak. Her right hand raises, and on her finger is noticed a small ring fitted with a white stone. The ring glows until a bright light fills the room and all close their eyes against its radience. The ring flashes and the light receeds, and the class finds themselves on the first page of the forum.

The stranger begins to take her leave but turns.

Oh Master Erinhue,
bard of great skill.
Meet again soon,
I indeed hope we will.

To be a bard is my wish,
yes, my one wish and best.
My A, B, C's I will send,
to the Pony with all the rest.

Bright Blessings to you and everyone here! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

...and BUMP!

Great names are often passed on so there is no reason that your Master Samwise (or a Frodo or Gandalf ect)must be THE Samwise Gamgee of the books. Or he can be if you want and living the life he had between the end of the adventures and his sailing into the West. Or he can be someone completely other.

I have no idea who was the Captain of the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth but I invented Beliran and now he is the intrepid captain. Neither Leander nor the El'Al Loth exist anywhere in Tolkien. He is a Fourth Age character and his history and that of the El'Al Loth are my creation and the background is woven into the projected Fourth Age Middle Earth of many of The Pony's RP's

Whatever the name, the characer is yours to create as you wish. If you wish to take the shortcut of using one of Tolkien's characters you already have a background and history to work with in you writing if you choose. the more background you have established, the deeper your character can grow to become and the better you will be able to utilize that character's history to shade and enrich your writing.

The point is take the time to think about who your character is and what aspects of his or her background do you want to bring forward when you RP, in the end the character will become yours and will have a little of you mixed into them no matter who they were named for originally.

Good grief!! I just spent some time going over some of the new threads, looking to see if any would be good to join. I'm stunned by how bad some of them are. I'm no great shakes as a writer but at least I can use proper punctuation and spell correctly and construct an actual paragraph with real sentences. Heaven help us. No, come to think of it, Erinhue help us because heaven won't have any of this. Please for the love of Eru EVERYBODY READ THIS THREAD!!

Galhadrim - I feel your pain and that's exactly why I started this thread and its companion piece Role Play 102-the Advanced Class. I just wish there was a way to make some of those substandard posters read it and take note.

Wow, I am in love with this thread! I hang on everyword you guys wrote, you all bring out several good points to RPing. =)
*cough*MICROSOFT WORD*cough* don'tcha love it? I mean it has spell checker, the thesaurus, and all those little hints on addin comma's and semi-colons and even tell you when you write meaningless fragment sentences.

I had this great idea of making a real board because my bravenet one was getting to small and I brought along the splendid world of rpg. Unfortunantely I have one other author - who's a journalist - as for the rest this is their first messageboarding experience. (ugh) I started off a party from my point of view writing like this: *walks toward the scene of the party*
*prepares to get groove on*
"oh, yeah, baby!!"
*discos*
And the whole stinkin' post was like that. Obviously I got my just payment: now almost all my boardies post like that (with the little *astric* marks and a ton of ...'s) and for dialogue they go like this:
Laurëlin Mallenuial: blah, blah, blah
*she walks over to drink some water*...*does something else*...*comes back over*
Who'sYourMama: well blah to you to!

Get what I'm hinting at? Arg, and my and the only other person who's had RP experience are trying to start some really good, creative rpg's and I get people posting like that; then we have to 'carry' their character because even they don't like the way they are writing.

What a mess! I practically disected these seven (yes, all of them) pages and put it on my board (with your names of course <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> )
I am as much in your debt as I am in high hopes that this will raise the standard of posting at my board.

Elf Shade I am flattered that you would think enough of this thread to use it to help out at another board. I do hope it has good results for you.

Writing is a good part of how I make my living although the dull reports and grantsmanship proposals I write do not excite me like a good RP can. I too suggest that people type out their parts on MSWord it has excellent tools to assist with the more mundane but necessary things such as spelling and punctuation.

Good luck on your board and if you have time post here as well we can always use consciencous posters in The Pony and The Dragon. Erinhue, and all others who have offered such wise advice, I am deeply in your debt! I have taken the RP'ing 101 class, and I feel much better about RP'ing.. yet I am still hesitant to just barge right on in to somebody's story. Are they going to mind? Especially since I haven't done RP before? And if I mess up because I'm amateur, I don't want their thread to get locked. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> Help!
--Alassë of Númenor

This is what I've found being just a newbie myself.

Well, the best place to get your feet wet seems to me to be The Lucky Fortune Inn. Newbie friendly, and lots of interesting things happening. Right now there is an orc sitting at the bar talking to a dwarf, several characters have just wandered in, there is a group about to set out on on some sort of adventure among other things.

There are several nice threads besides this one to give you ideas. On how to create a character and don't forget to read some successful threads like The Bard Wedding of Hobbituk and Turelie_Lurea which ended with...um...lets say "a bang" and The Gathering Storm

I find to write a follow-up it may take me many hours to think things through, even in the LFI! So don't despair <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Then it may be several days before others have a chance to reply or it could be hours...you just never know <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

This thread once again needs to be brought up for some visibility. I've lurked around some various storylines and it seems like Role Play 101 would help some people tremendously. I always want to do whatever I can to encourage writing and to have fun while doing it. There are some great ways the Pony can be used to further that aim.

You can write in different styles, you can practice a plot device, you can force yourself and others to think on their feet, and you can gain ideas to use in other areas of your life. You can do all this and get advice from erinhue as well. It's a perfect world!

For some of the newer threads that are trying to find the mark, best of luck to you.

<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I just wanted to say... This was posted over a year ago, but... "I know of only one thread that actually ended with a ride off into the sunset and folks heading safely home to live... well you know the drill. That was Elbren's Challenge, a really great ride". <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> A RP I was in was finished, Quest for the Coisar... It was because we were getting bored, but we all decided to finish it up. We got it locked when we finished so nobody would post on it anymore. It was a lot of fun, and very satisfying once it was finished... After we finished it, we made a sequel, Company of the Coisar, because we missed it... It takes place 500 years later, with our original characters if the characters were immortal, or their decendents if they weren't, and a few new characters. It's incredibly satisfying...

This thread deserves a bump <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

No, thank you. I am flattered that you would wish to post this at another board<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I worked hard on this thread and on Role Play 102 and I truly thank you for offering to give me credit in the new thread at the new board. My monster ego thanks you very much. I post on a few boards if you give me the url I might drop in on that one.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I really am happy to see that this seems to have helped a lot of people.

I must say (again) that this thread is very informative and is chock full of useful information, not only for those that are new to Rp (or collaborative writing), but also for those who have been hanging around the Pony for a long time (as I have.)

One important point that I cannot stress enough at the moment is this:

If you have found a story that interested you and you started posting to it and later found (for various reasons) that you no longer wish to continue PLEASE inform the others involved in the story; post your intention in the Aside or OOC thread. If you don’t have time to write your character out, someone else in the story could handle it for you in way that will keep within the flow of the story (it has been done before).

This has happened in a thread that I am involved with now and it is one point that hasn’t been discussed before in great detail.

I am of the opinion that if a character is left in an ongoing story thread, it opens the door for the other writers involved to use that character as they see fit. I know that it can lead to anger and hard feelings if the original writer/creator happens to stop in sometime in the future and reads things that his character has said and/or done that they do not agree with, but they should have taken into consideration the feelings of the other writers involved in the story in the first place at having a character around that no one was writing for.

What are some other opinions on this matter?

Oh, and btw, Elbren’s Challenge was a very good story (I enjoyed reading it), but it is not the only thread in the Pony that has come to a satisfactory ending. Since luthienelflover has informed everyone about Quest for the Coisar, I thought it only right to add the ones that I know of that came to a conclusion.

Awakening Fyre (started in 2000 and ended over a year later)
Heritage (started in 2001 and ended Jan 2003)
In Search of Hunters Rest (started in 2000 and finished a year later)

It takes commitment and cooperation to finish a story….that’s my nickels worth. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hunter darlin I couldn't agree more. When you join and RP thread you have indeed made a committment. People are depending on you and waiting on you for your contribution to the on going whole.

Real Life always comes first but courtesy is due to everyone because all your friends in cyberspace are real folk in Real Life too. If for whatever reason you find you can no longer post to a story thread you should at the very least let the other posters know that you will no longer be posting.

I am stuck in a thread right now where I have no idea if the character I was supposed to be traveling with is ever gonna post again. Im about to write them out myself but I hesitate to do it incase they do return.

If you are leaving you should also be considerate enough to do something with your character. Kill them off, have them leave to go elsewhere or decide to stay behind or return home or whatever. It is extremely impolite and unfair to leave your character hanging for others to try and move about or write out of the tale.

Cooperative storytelling depends on cooperation....and consideration.

Everybody! read everything on this thread!
Ugulz chased the two warg pups down a darkened corridor. "Incorrigible brats!" the sweating orc thought, "when I get my claws on you!". Charging into an unused classroom, that was even more unkempt the the orc itself, Ulugz looked around for it's truant charges. Dust covered every surface in deep drifts, except for in one corner were the play-fighting wolf cub's were stirring it into choking clouds. Cobwebs hung like curtians from the ceiling. Ulugz squinted up at the chalkboard, "ugh, no pictures" the orc grunted, and proceded to carve a crude and rude image into the board's surface. "hah! better now!" Forgetting the dire punishments previously treatened the new artist shouted to the pups,"come on were going home!"
