How to avoid the dreaded One Line Post in an RP STORY and getting the Pony shut down.

Be literate!
That dont mean every word has to be spelled correctly, but it does mean some effort needs to be put into what is being typed.

find a thread to join.
Many Inns and tavern threads are already started and can be used to post a characters entrance and work on interaction. This is a great way to get a feel for writing RP. No need to start a thread for every thought.

Think about the RP as a whole.
If you are going to start a thread, then put some thought into it. any person starting a thread should set the scene well with some description. Its a tavern... Ok where is it located? what does it look like? Is it in town or a remote roadhouse? Is it a respectable place or a dive? Etc.This is also where you build your characters basic descriptions. You have to go in with a fair idea about your own character.

Set the scene.
Your character is arriving at said tavern. Is it raining or sunny? Day or night? Is there birds singing or it hot and flies are biting? Etc. Ok, goes inside the tavern. Is it dark and smokey, or bright and cheery? Is there lots of patrons or a few? Is there entertainment or not, and is the bartender a handsome man or old codger? Describe the room.

Character description.
This is where you use the things you compiled on your character. It is not necessary to describe your character all in the first post, but some details are essential. Tall or short, maybe hair length or such, or maybe a defining scar or type of stare... other things like eye color and such can be added after they start to interact with other characters, etc.

Character enhancements.
These are the things that define the character's demenaor

There are more, but this is an example. using the above, lets see what we can come up with for a basic tavern's opening post and a subsequent characters post... (the post will be in italics and my comments will not)

First, a lousy first RP post:

The woman came to the tavern and walked in. She went to order a drink and sat down at an empty table, looking around at other people.

Now, lets make a good first RP post:

The rain was cold as it blew hard against the door of the tavern. (Scene) The tall woman wrapped in the dark cloak (character description) dismounted and secured her horse to the railing.(Scene and character enhancement. The character has a horse, and the tavern has a railing outside) She looked around before pushing open the door to enter.(Character enhancement - she is wary) The creaking hinge announced her entry as it does everyone who enters the Dog Bone. (scene enhancement - gives the place character of its own) She looked around at the grim faces that sat about the tables and lined the bar (more scene enhancement - the place is rather crowded) but soon they turned away and carried on with their business. (The NCE's (non-controlled-entities) activities are stated in a general way to allow alttitude for other characters to join by being in the Tavern) Dahrla (character building - her name is given to the readers) walked slowly to an open section of the bar and threw back her hood to let her golden brown long hair cascade about her shoulders, (character description - tells reader of her hair) hoping it would get the attention of the bartender. (Character enhancement - gives the implication she is pretty) She gets a mead with her copper coin she found in her cloak pocket (character enhancement - she is poor) and she looks around for a place to sit. (Character action) An empty table in the middle of the floor is all she sees and prefers to stand and lean on the bar where she is. (scene setting and character enhancement - The place has little room, and the character dont wish to be in the center of things) She sips her mead and her eyes drift about the room, taking note of people that interest her. (character action - character settles in and opens up the RP for interaction).

Ok.. short but it will do. The more you can add to the scene setting like locations and such the better.

Now, poster #2 reads the above and thinks of joining. His lousy interaction post would be something like this:

The guy turned to the woman and offered to buy her a drink. He said, 'You are beautiful, can I buy you a drink?

Now, lets look at poster #2's good interaction post:

The tall man had been drinking most of the night. He was thinking of leaving when the door was heard and he looked over to see a cloaked stranger enter. He could tell by the eyes that shone form under the hood and the size of the person there was a good chance it was a woman, so he slowly moved over closer to the guy next to him to make room at the bar. He knew the place was crowded and hoped she would find the opening. It worked! she came as expected! Her hair brushed agains him as she removed her hood, and he watched as she fumbled for a coin, and only affording a mead. He looked at her as she ignored him and he said, 'I could buy you something better if you wish m'lady'

I wont break it all down as I did the other as its late for me, but it has the same things as the opening post, for it is in effect the opening post for poster #2. He uses what poster #1 threadstarter wrote to good advantage, and enhances poster #1's character in ways #1 may not have seen. example, she went to the bar next to a man who was just an NCE to her, and she showed no acnowledgement to him which is fine. One cant acnowledge every NCE... so #2 used that man to introduce his presence in the tavern and show she was used to such places by ignoring most people. Note he did not introduce his character because he is only described as 'a tall man'. This leaves room for future posts. He also picked up on things like the door squeaking and such.

When written this way, each post adds depth and character to the scene, and others who join have ever more material to use as they join.

Hopefully this may help in showing what is expected in RP here in the Prancing Pony vs what has been happening. Give it a read please! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

A traveler, in a dusty cloak, strides up to the school. He enters, curious to see what goes on. After looking into several classrooms and observing for a while, he heads for the office. There he spies a list of all the available classes. Though he had noticed that it was no longer actively occupied, he knew that all the notes in the Role-Playing 101 classroom were still there. He certainly found them usefull. And even though he had seen the Role-Playing 102 class, which seemed to be still in session, not all the information covered in RP 101 was covered in RP 102. When he saw the list of classes, he was depressed to see that RP 101 had fallen off the board, and was lying, seemingly abandoned, in a pile at the bottom. After a moment, he picked up the RP 101 plaque, placed it on the board, and Bumped it into it's proper place, high up, where newbies could easily spot it.

"Just for the record, I would hazard a guess that this could be considered a one line post in spirit, if not in form, considering all of the above was just to bump it (I had to search quite a bit to find this thread<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>)."

Well, I came here and took a better look, I glanced over and I've been following the rules, and such, yet I found I ran into a problem. In a thread, I violated the rules, that I knew existed, but only I thought as a preference, for most threads that I joined, put up the pool, filled it with water and said "Jump on in!!!" and so I did, yet lately I pulled out of a lot of them, (due to nobody posting) and worked on my own, which I did not mind, a LITTLE tiny bit of OOC, but not A lot....yet, I was scolded by one who is known well on here, and I feel very stupid right now, because I thought I had it covered, I guess not. I suppose I must set aside my pride and go back and hit the books. I feel like an adult who has gone back to kindergarten and looks awkwardly at all the children......(no offence to newbies!) This is a good thread to read, and if those who I might have offended see this, I'm sorry, I didn't challenge your rules, but the rules of the entire site. I walk away with minimal damage, but enough to teach me a lesson, even with a quiet one like myself...I wish I was as wise as Eriu my character.

Hi. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I'm Rose and I'm from Ringbearer.org. I was scared at first to venture outside of the special RB threads in Tom's House, but being naturally inquisitve and loving RPG's I decided to come here and have a look around. Let me just say that although the rather stern demeanor of the mods frightened me at first, once I read this thread I was very impressed. You do a good job of keeping the peace around here. RB doesn't have nearly as many rules about role-paying (no official overall rules in fact, just some for individual threads), but I can understand why with a huge site like this it would be necessary to cut down on the RP spamming. Although at first glance it seems harsh, I have read some of the existing RPG threads here and was amazed at the high quality of writing. Obviously your rules pay off. So I just wanted to bump this thread and say, Keep up the good work! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

To both Eriu and Rosie: Welcome!

Eriu, I realize by your date joined you're not much newer than I am, but it sounds like you came in the hard way. I was lucky in my adopter who has taught me well.Come on over to RP 102 if you feel you're ready. The class is fun -- and Master Erinhue makes the assignments hard -- which is a good thing. And remember, the first step to wisdom is understanding what you do not know! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Rosie, sorry about RB -- I read the FAQ's tonight and it looks like you'll be up and running again soon, though. In the meantime, please join us in RP 102 as well! Maybe we'll make a convert out of you!

Oh, and *BUMP*

Well, I'm pretty thick headed sometimes. I was adopted lol, by Crystal_Arwen, hmmmmmn, haven't stopped by her place in awhile, maybe I should, see what Murannon, Ashlei and the others are up to! Anyway, I didn't ask much about Rping, because I was already well versed from being at Playbyweb.com, dunno if ya'll know that. Well, I might have joined a bit before you Wisteria, but it took me a month to come back and understand it fully lol.
I know, that its stupid to go "I don't need to learn anything else but I know enough." It wasn't that, I thought I had the rules down, thats what. Still, I was being prideful and took the suggestion of coming here as a grave insult to my skills, which have been often praised. It wasn't the praise that went to my head, it was the fact too that I was doing good, with my character development, description, enhancment and enchantment lol, but, I guess I"ll head over to RP 102, just to see if I missed anything. Put aside my pride and stubbornness.

Hi all! This is my first time trying an RP, and I began with the Quest for Elven Swords. Sadly, this thread has been locked. I was wondering, is it my writing style that is lacking? I understand the originator of the thread has issues with the mods (I love ya, mods! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> ) but I just hope my writing hasn't contributed to it.

Guess this *bumps* the thread, too!

Huh, well, it seems either I've gotten alot worse, or the mods don't share your opinion. I'm inclined to believe the first. Frankly, I'm starting to think that if my posts have 'no content' as I've been told a few times, I have no idea what a post with content is. I always try to move the story ahead, and even when I'm confident I've done that, someone tells me I haven't. It's starting to scare me. I really, really, really don't want them to take 'further action', and I've got a pretty good idea of what that is. I don't think I'm a bad writer. I just don't know what a 'one-line' post is anymore! Can anyone help me out?

Well, lalatiel, since I'm also in one of the RPs that you participate in, I can say that the main thing is you seem to wait for others to add to the story and then you add dialogue. You don't seem to help carry the story, you just kind of...talk. I don't want to sound harsh, but rather encouraging. Go out on a limb and throw in an unexpected twist, add some spice to the story. You can have some control over what goes on. Just a tip from someone who's seen your work! You're not bad at all, just lacking in moving the story along.

ServantOfDarkness

P.S. I think I'd like to sign up for a class! I've been doing a little RPing, but I could use some help all the same! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hello! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I have been on TORC for a while, and I've only been in one or two RP's. I haven't thought about RPing in a while until Vana reminded me when she was directing newbies to this thread. So I wanted to sign up for classes to improve my writing, so I can enjoy this aspect of the board and just join in on the Role Playing. I already have much of my character's bio and backround, and I really want to do something with it! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

So...here I am. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Fantasy Girl and everyone else

Please read over the info in the "class" segments at the start of this thread. This is an overall view of the various forms of RP here at TORC but then I urge you to check out Role Play 102 the Advanced Class.

That one is ongoing and I am holding a class in it. there is much information that really should be read and a few assignments that will help you put the info to use. Come join and ask questions and I will do my best to help any one improve that wants to. Looking forward to seeing you all as interested readers or active participants.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
