OOC: The Quest to Retake Moria: NOW ACCEPTING NEW CHARACTERS

Postby Lothloriel » Mon Dec 29, 2003 11:21 am

EDIT: Bumping this back up to see if anyone is still interested, or if we can find new characters. As far as I can tell, there are only 3 of us that have not sailed West. If any of you are interested in continuing or possibly starting afresh, post here or email me at rconleytechie AT aol DOT com. New characters are welcome, or you may pick up an old character.

First, let me set out the basics of this RP.

The year is 3215, 76 years into the reign on King Eldarion, the son of Aragorn and Arwen. The time has finally come to re-take Moria and restore it to its former glory.

There are no elves left in Middle-Earth at this time, but there are many with elvish blood in them. Be creative in working out your character, but try to stay as close to Tolkien as possible.

Dwarves and Men are the most likely to come on this quest, but anyone is welcome.

Here is the basic layout for what we will do.

The companions will meet on the Glittering Caves beneath Helm's Deep, and there discuss this quest for a short while.

We will then set out towards the Gap of Rohan, passing through Rohan and the edge of Fangorn Forest, picking up travelers on the way.

Passing through Lorien, we will meet a large band of Dwarves and then enter through the East Gate of Moria.

Guidelines and Rules:

Please, no posts under at least 8 lines. If you have not read the guidelines for Role-playing, please do so. This thread will be locked by the Mods if we do not follow the rules.

Do not kill anyone or injure anyone without PERMISSION. Be courteous in your posts; if someone asks you a question, respond to them.

If you want to make a major change, i.e. a Balrog is rampaging through Fangorn, please discuss it here in the OOC before posting it.

Hope you'll have fun with this.

~Lothloriel

This sounds cool! I've got two bios for you to look at.

Name: Simbelmynë; Mynë (nickname)
Race: Half-elf
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Height: 5' 6"
Weight: Unknown
Hair Colour: Mid-back length, curly, red hair.
Eye Colour: Bright, rasberry blue
Appearance: Mynë has something of a rough edge from living on the street and it comes out in the way she walks and interacts with certain people. She has clear, detailed features and her brother often has to fend off overly arduous suitors.
Build: Kiara is both tall, and strong. Her former occupation as a street performer has given her agility and the ability to think quickly on her feet.
Marital Status: Single with no intention of ever marrying.
Occupation: Mercenary, but she will not fight for anyone unless they are for the forces of good.
Outfit: When performing, she wears all black with colorful sashes and scarves tied in various places. When she is 'off duty' Mynë refuses to wear dresses much to Lusar's, her twin brother, discomforture. Instead, she prefers brown trousers, black boots, and loose yet modest tops with billowy sleeves; and a forest green cloak guards her from winter's chill.
Weapons: Because of her profession, Mynë has acquired - legally or not - quite a collection of decorative swords and daggers. All are kept razor sharp along with a dwarf-made axe. An elven long-bow from Lorien rounds out the collection.
Brief History: Mynë and her brother were raised by their human father after their elven mother was killed in a Haradrim ambush. He was a warrior for Gondor and raised his children to be soldiers; they retained their sense of humour thanks to their uncle. He taught them all kinds of practical jokes and such. He also taught them what they know of woodcraft.

Hello, Arwen. I think Mynë would work best for this RP. Where does she live? If she still lives in Gondor, she may have gotten wind of this somehow and come to Rohan.

Glad you like it! The thread will be up hopefully later today or early tommorrow.

ok...I think I worked out a bio...

Name: Lindial
Race: of Rohan men, though her maternal grandmother was an Elf.
Age: around 35 years young
Height: 5’ 8 1/2"
martial staus: single, not really interested in looking
Appearance: strawberry blonde hair, hazel eyes
Weapons: A spear, a partizan, and 3 throwing knives
Clothes: weather worn tunics, black boots.
Personality: quiet, most of the time, spars and practices with her sword and spear any chance she can get. Her elven heritage is shown by her pointed ears and her fair voice.
History: an orphan, for her parents were killed when she was 3 years of age. She was taken in by one of the soldiers of Rohan, who had wanted a daughter, for he had 5 sons, but no girl child. She was raised as a boy, and learned to fight with the best and ride like a professional. When she wants to be alone, she’ll ride her horse, Hathgar to Helms Deep, which was only about a mile from where she lived.

Has a goatie.
Eye Colour: bluish-green
Appearance: Aerthos is well built and strong, with a fit masculine figure, however he is trained in stealth and his build does not hinder him. He is quite attractive and has the look of one with a charming personality, however he his ears tend to stick out more than they should and he is teased because he is uncomfortable wearing a helmet, and needs his tailor made.
Personality: Introvert. Charming and sensitive with people he trusts, but rather shy and quiet. Tends to be a bit rash at times. Can be irritable with people thinks are trying to use him.
Occupation: Rider of Rohan
Marital Status: Single, not looking
Clothing: Brown common pants or dark green tunic. Wears Rohhirim armour when fighting.
Weapons: Proficient with longsword, short sword and spear, and can also use a longbow. Can duel wield weapons. Knows how to fight on horseback and owns a Rohan steed called Elfstone which he named after Aragorn.
Brief History: Aerthos was brought up in Gondor by his father. His mother was from Rohan, and died shortly after he was born. He trained as a Knight in Minas Tirith and was an honoured man. Shortly after he was made Tower Guard, his father died, so he got leave to go Rohan to look for his mother's family. He is now a Rider of Rohan, but his heart is set on seeking adventure on his own, however he is not a very skilled healer, but a good figher since he was trained from childhood in Gondor, and also on his arrival in Rohan.

good enough? If there is a problem tell me and i'll try work something out.

...and yes, from the charachter depth, one can see I play Neverwinter Nights alot...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Sounds great, Andu. You're not jumping in, the thread isn't even started. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I'll put y'all up in the first post in just a bit. Here's my character:

Name: Frorí
Race: Dwarf
Gender: Male
Age: 123
Height: 4'6"
Looks: Frorí has so dark brown hair and beard as to be almost black, braided in parts. He is always clad in heavy armour and helm, and carries 4 to 7 axes at all times.
Personality: He is mistrustful at first, especially of Races other than dwarves, but once you earn his trust he will stand by you through death, darkness, and beyond. He is something of a scholar, though if you call him one he'd probably severely injure you.
Brief Bio: He was born in the Lonely Mountain, but has lived in the Glittering Caves for most of his life. He was something of a favorite of Gimli's, and is in possession of the Book of Mazarbul. The rest will come out along the way. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> (and no, he is not married)
If you guys wouldn't mind, I'd like to start my first RP on this board here. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Name: Telrunya Took (after the elf-friend of his father)
Race: Hobbit
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Height: 4' 0"
Weight: Unknown
Hair: Dirty blonde, curly and down to lobes of his ears
Eye Color: Light brown
Appearance: Is always seen with a smile on his face and usually dawns some sort of a green or brown vest with brown or black cloth pants that reach just above his ankles.
Build: Average height for his kind and isn't too heavy or too light, skinny build but can be strong in a pinch.
Personality: Introvert. Believes he is ready for a rough adventure but keeps all thoughts and feelings mostly to himself. Although, once he believes he is good friends with someone, he will become an extrovert and tell them more than want to know.
Occupation: An average solider for The King of Gondor.
Weapons: A small elven dagger that was given to him for his 30th birthday.
Brief History: Was born in The Shire but his parents were from different worlds, basically. His mother, Goldilocks Gardner (Daughter of Mayor Samwise Gardner) lives in The Shire and ran into Faramir Took (Son of Peregrin Took, Thain of The Shire) by chance. A hobbit from Gondor and a hobbit from The Shire. Whereupon, Faramir moved to The Shire once he knew of Telrunya being born. Telrunya fit in just fine with the other children and was nothing of interest. But he always had a reason to tell a story about some adventure he went on or one he should like to. And since his mother's death, he and his father moved back to Gondor where they repledged their services to the King. Finding nothing of importantance (or adventure-wise) in Gondor...he heard gossip of something stirring in Rohan, and made his way there.

I hope that's okay. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Indeed, I have read the guidelines and I can make my entrance one of two ways.

On your journey, where you said you must go through Rohan, pick me up there. Or somehow, I find a reason (maybe there is a notice about the adventure or something) and I go to the Crystal Caverns at the beginning of the adventure. Whichever suits you all best.

We'd love to have you, Qwertymoo! Just come up with some stuff about him! We definately need more Dwarves, we only have two so far, and this will be a mainly 'Dwarf' quest, although quite a few men of Gondor would like to have Moria retaken simply to make all of Middle-Earth a good deal safer.

Here's my character, just for the record.

Name: Farin
Race: Dwarf
Age: 152
Gender: Male
Height: 4'7"
Hair: Dark black
Eyes: Black
Bio: Related to Dain, the King under the Mountain. (at least, who was. Enormously important Dwarf. Regarded the best warrior since Thorin Oakenshield. Very rich.

I'm going to be putting up my first post and starting the thread in a bit. Just start posting along, as your character comes in. Some hints:

Make sure your character has a REASON for being there - and have him explain, if you can find a way. Why would a Hobbit want to go to Moria on a very 'fighting' Quest? Well, he could have heard a tale from his ancestors, passed down from Merry and Pippin, and been fascinated by it. For an Elf or Man, the want of Mithril could draw them, or merely to go and help regain the halls of Khazad-dum.

Ask questions of this thread before posting. The actual thread should read just like a novel.

I've noticed on some other RPing threads people often repeat exactly what the previous post said - except from their character's point of view. If you want to show you're character's reaction to what was said, that's fine and good, but always try to have something new happen in each post. (or something new said)

Expect the Dwarves to be extremely critical of you. Don't take it seriously, to heart. That's their nature.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS stay true to character. Hobbits don't race around giving orders and charging into battle, Elves don't crack jokes, Dwarves are extremely stubborn and very sarcastic.

During a battle scene, don't 'end' it until everyone's had a chance to have heroics.

I hope that this RP will go well and we'll have a good time - as well as succeeding in retaking Moria.

Basic RP layout: The companions are meeting at the Glittering Caves because many of the companions are from around there. They will spend a good deal of time talking and discussing their plans, and finally go to pack. Early the next morning they'll set off riding across the Riddermark. (Dwarves cursing and Men cracking jokes) They will journey around the Forest of Fangorn, staying outside the forest yet near its borders, all the way up, between Lothlorien and Fangorn until they reach the Misty Mountains, and then they will journey along the base of the mountain until they reach Dimril Dale, and then up through the Moria Gate. That's getting a little ahead of ourselves, but it's just so you have a clear idea.

Also: You don't have to join it right now, your character can move in at the borders of Fangorn or anywhere else.

Our party (depending on how many people join) will be about fifteen people, mixed races. When they reach the Doors of Moria, a little before, perhaps, they will be joined by Farin's younger brother Grimir, who has journeyed from the Lonely Mountain with 300 Dwarves. They will be our 'fighting men'. Our group will be the strategizers and generals, although we can do our fair share of the fighting.

So off we go!

-Ugluk

His tales from both of his grandfather's families (Sam and Pippin) and their adventure is what sparked his adventure-some quest to lead him here, as it is.

Hello. May I join this RP? I'm still figuring out my character, so I'll edit my post later. I think I'll be a dwarf, though.

Edit: Okay, I've got a bio. I am terribly ashamed to say that I got the name from the Barrow-downs Name Generator <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> but I couldn't think up a Dwarf name.

Second Edit: I am stupid enough not to have included the character's name and race! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> I'm adding it now ...

Name: Mârdin

Gender: Male

Age: 65

Race: Dwarf

Apperance: He is rather short, even for a Dwarf, and on the chubby side, which makes him look even shorter. He prides himself on his long, light brown beard and his thick, braided hair.

Clothes: Dwarf-crafted mail and helm over leather tunic, leggings, vest, and boots, with fancy gold embroidering and Dwarvish runes. On his thick black belt he carries a broadsword and a long knife. On his back is a round shield.

Personality: Slightly condescending to others, snobby, and very much dislikes anyone he thinks is lower class than he is. However, he likes and admires Elves very much.

Bio: Mârdin is a Dwarf from the Iron Hills. His brothers were killed by stray Orcs before he was born, making him the apple of his parent’s eyes, and more than a little spoiled. He rarely leaves home, as his parents are very overprotective of him, even though he is of age.

This is one of the few times he is allowed to venture forth, on a trade mission to Rohan, with only a small group of companions. Mârin begins to realize that there is more to the world than the mountains of his home and now longs to explore lands to the West. He is determined to change his parents’ minds once he gets back to the Iron Hills.

However, on the way there, he visits his kinsfolk in the Glittering Caves, where he may find adventure sooner than he expected . . .

Also, I am a quiet, not so rich female writing from a snobby, rich, loud male's perspective so I don't know how well that'll go off <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

--Silmi

OK--my idea for this character's entrance is that she is from a family that still worships the White Hand and sees itself as a rival of the Eye. Though both powers are gone in this RP, the feuds between Eyeists and Handites still are strong. She wants to see this stronghold of Eyeists destroyed, but she knows that there are far too few of her kind still alive to take Moria themselves. So, following the old adage, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," she's decided to help you guys retake Moria. She can be a guide of sorts, as she has spent quite a bit of time sneaking about in the passageways of the mine.

Name: Chasga Grund, Chas for short (I made that up. I don't know much Black Speech.)

Race: Uruk/goblin--she's a smallish uruk, in other words.

Appearance: mottled green/gray/black skin, black hair (which she keeps brushed) down to mid-back, prominent fangs, and large, pointy ears that stick out to the sides a little. She resembles her goblin mother as far as build and stature go--she's short and not quite as burly as an uruk.

Occupation: currently a blacksmith/armourer's assistant in a particularly shady part of town in the outskirts of Gondor. The blacksmith/armourer doesn't have Dark leanings, but is more than willing to put up with an orc if it means having an extremely strong assistant who will work for pennies because she doesn't know enough to ask for more. He is not the only human ever to have done this--several have been found sheltering orcs and using them for manual labor in exchange for food, shelter, and silence. Chasga has a lot in the way of brute strength, but her goblin side shows in her nimble hands, and thus she is often put to work detailing blades, armor, and other things so that they will fetch higher prices.

Bio: Until recently, Chasga lived in a small band of fellow uruks and goblins living in the foothills of the Misty Mountains. A lot of time was spent in skirmishes with the goblins of Moria, and because of her small stature, Chasga was often sent inside the mines to spy. However, several years ago, the Rohirrim and Gondorian armies renewed their campaign of orcish extermination. Chasga's band was caught offguard and, having no stronghold like the Moria orcs, most of them were killed. Chasga managed to get away on warg-back. Eventually, she was captured by slavers and sold to the blacksmith/armourer on the outskirts of Gondor when it was discovered that she had experience in metalworking.

Companions: a very dark gray/black warg with yellow eyes named Sweetie who now lives in a shed out behind the smithy (mainly because the blacksmith is too scared to go near enough to dispatch her), muzzeled and chained at all times. Also a fell-hawk (something I made up, feel free to dismiss it) named Critter, kept in the shed on a leg-chain, who is about the size of a crow and looks a lot like a dark purple ramphorynchus pterosaur with feathers everywhere except on its wings.

Clothing: grubby secondhand cotton blouse that may have been white at some time in the distant past, brown leather breeches tucked into well-made hobnailed boots (the smith's son grew out of them), a brown leather apron for metalworking, a rope belt, and a leather thong to keep her hair back. Wears a hooded brown weatherstained cloak, a rough gray woolen scarf, and brown leather gloves when she ventures outside the smithy.

If that's not acceptable, i can certainly change to a different character, ugluk and Loth. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

--Aiwe

I noticed the first post of your in-character thread, and I thought I'd help you fix a few inconsistencies. You might have Ugluk edit his post and change a few things.

Firstly, Gimli did not simply tell other Dwarves of the Lonely Moutain about the Glittering Caves, he led many of them away to settle there, and they did many works there. Gimli was their lord, the Lord of the Glittering Caves, until he passed into the West with Legolas in 120 F.O.

Secondly, Dain was not the King Under the Mountain during that time. Dain died in the War of the Ring, in the Battle of Erebor. His son Thorin III Stonehelm, became King, and he died before King Elessar did. So whoever is the King Under the Mountain is either a son or a grandson of Thorin III.

P.S. 3215 is not sixty years into the reign of King Eldarion, it is 76 years into his reign.

Hi Aiwe. I think that'll be o.k., as long as Ugluk doesn't mind.

Telrunya, don't worry, it happens to the best of us. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Elf_friend, that sounds pretty good, but why would a Dwarf carry a sword? Is there some strange happening that would provide a reason for that?

Arwen, go ahead and take your time. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Elessar, I believe I said "about sixty years". Thank you for giving me a exact date. Ugluk also only stated that his character was related to Dain, 'the King under the Mountain that was' here, and in his first post, he said that he was the 'third in command' and the 'greatest fighter since Thorin'.

I am quite aware that Gimli was the Lord of the Glittering Caves, in fact I am writing a fanfic about that very happening at the moment. Why do you mention it? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>

Well, Thorin had a sword, didn't he?And in the Hobbit, it says, about Dain's people of the Iron Hills, "In battle they wielded heavy two-handed mattocks; but each of them had also a short broad sword at his side and a round-shield slung at his back." So it is basically correct. I hope. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Also he has this weird un-Dwarf-like admiration for the Elves. (ie, he wants to be graceful, beautiful, immortal, etc.)

I believe Elros meant that Gimli is no longer Lord of the Glittering Caves by the time this RP takes place.

And elf_friend is really bothersome to type out, so please call me Sil or Elfie, if you like. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hello hello...So this is the Moria RP, eh? Mind if I join? Or is it too late? I have a Dwarf character in the works (Káin Stormbringer...who is a male...very different stuff for me <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>) so if it's ok, I'd post the bio a little later on.

_Mith

Mith! You are very welcome. Please, join our humble RP.

Sil, you're right. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I'd completely forgotten that! Maybe you're right, but I don't see why he felt he needed to say that.

Couple of questions

This party we’re forming I assume is going to enter Moria on the western side as the dwarven army from Lonely Mountain enters from the east?

Is our party trying to enter on stealth, or is it possible to have a larger contingency enter with us?

Here’s my idea for a character.

Graint (known as Slitter)
Dwarf (85) Male

Appearance: Shorter than the average dwarf, stout and rather agile for his size and build. Short ragged trimmed beard, helm, wears no metal armor (leather). Carries with him throwing axes, a battle axe (usually strapped to back) and numerous knives - no shield.

Bio: Descended from a group of outcast dwarves that regarded Balin’s attempt to retake Moria sheer folly, and deserted his party. They were found out and looked down upon by the race of dwarves ever since. Graint wears his beard short rather than completely shaven as he believes that he isn’t to blame for his ancestors faults. Much of his generation believes the same. Most of their group (some 700 - including women) have spent their lives training in hunting, guerrilla tactics, and stealth in order to eek out an existence. They look to redeem themselves through helping in this venture and hopefully be restored as part of dwarven-kingdom for their efforts (if their help will be had).

Knowing that many of their clan will likely perish on such a sojourn, they are willing to take that chance for the sake of those that would remain.

Would this work in the story line (to the three putting this together)? Graint is coming as the one chosen to represent the outcast clan to accompany this group to the East side of the Misty Mountains.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch: An aide also accompanies Graint to take news of this to the remaining clan in an attempt to create a diversion from the Western end of Moria. I guess it means coordinating two different forces (which is probably not what you had in mind). For all I care the whole of the clan could be forfeit in an attempt to soften up the enemy within Moria, with ‘very few’ remaining to be considered back into the fold of dwarven-kind.

Too far fetched? If you don’t like it, just Graint will be there and forego the rest of my gibberish above.

Qwertymoo
