~ The Mists of Eriador ~ OOC and Character Bios

Postby RavenTinuviel » Thu Jun 21, 2007 12:39 am

The Mists of Eriador role play is basically a sequel to an earlier one that was written here in the Prancing Pony years ago by some fantastic writers called Shadow Over Arnor. This current tale of The Mists of Eriador began in the Forsaken Inn five years after the events accounted in Shadow Over Arnor. Some of the characters mentioned in The Mists of Eriador are active characters that participated in Shadow Over Arnor, and no part of their history will be written or altered without the express written consent of the original character writers. Building characters in relation to any of the original characters is permitted. Profiles of these characters can be found in the Shadow Over Arnor - Characters thread.

For now, Hunter and I are writing this, but other writers are conditionally welcome.
For any of the original Shadow Over Arnor writers who return and feels an urge to join, that would be great. Just post your intention to do so here first as it would be greatly appreciated.
For anyone else; Mists of Eriador is essentially a sequel to Shadow Over Arnor, so many of the characters and the events accounted in Shadow Over Arnor are entwined into Mists Of Eriador. New characters are welcome, but a good working knowledge of the characters and events in Shadow Over Arnor is a prerequesite to be able to participate in Mists of Eriador. I myself only entered into this after several thorough readings of Shadow Over Arnor and half the time I feel I am in over my head. But I have to say it is as fun as it is challenging to stay within the parameters of a previous RP story as well as keeping it 'Tolkien'. 'Keeping it Tolkien' means to me that no event written here would in any way affect the story as told by Tolkien. It all kind of fits in the empty spaces.

Mists of Eriador will recount events that happen as the shadow that has been creeping over Arnor and the rest of Middle Earth in the decades before the War of the Ring grows darker and deepens evermore.

This story may move slowly at times. Both of us (Raven and Hunter) lead full lives and although we love writing together, often the real world takes precedence over the time we would like to devote to this board and writing. Please keep this in mind if you are thinking of joining.

We welcome and invite any questions and comments. Please post them here or feel free to contact either one of us by email or private message (if you are able).

Thank you and enjoy reading.

~ Mists of Eriador - The Characters ~

Name:
Raven Tinúviel
Age: Unsure. Estimates year of birth as 1st age 305-315
Gender: Female
Race: Eldar
Height: 5 foot
Weight: 100 pounds
Build: Small, shapely feminine frame that masked her true strength.
Hair: Black with a dark brown tint when in direct sunlight.
Eyes: Dark brown, near solid black and sometimes with a silvery gleam to them.
Skin Varies from a pale tan to deep olive depending on the season and exposure to the sun.
Marital Status: Unmarried

Occupation: Many. She knew herblore and was an enchantress of sorcery. She had worked in many lands in many trades over the many years... jewelsmith, exotic dancer, metalsmith, bar wench, gardener, prostitute, cook, needleworker, thief, hunter, inn proprieteress, concubine, and learned to befriend animals while speding time with Radagast. She was a survivor for she did what she had to do to get by.

Skills: Small sword and dagger she knew how to use, but her blade of choice was a finger knife. Rarely she carried a weapon other than that, which she kept well hidden. She had learned unarmed combat and evasion as a child and furthered these skills when she lived for a time with a man, but when he was slain in battle, she learned no more but kept up with what she knew. She loved to hunt with a bow and was a fair shot with her bow of old. She could play a harp and had a few songs of her own, and had a small flute that she would play music for the birds to listen to. Lover or lore of all lands, Raven remembered knowledge especially if it interested her.

Personality: She was her own person and was sometimes headstrong. She could be passive but it was usually because she wished or had need to be. Sometimes she was too trusting, and usually her judge of character was good, but a few times she had gotten into trouble. She was subtle and found no problem weaving a tale or do what she must to gain her own ends. Having once been in love with Amras, son of Feanor, they planned to be wed, but before the wedding she fell in love with his twin brother Amrod. Wishing not to cause Amras grief, she left their lands in the night and Raven loved not ever another of the Eldar until the Second Age.

Bio: Raven was the elder child of Eöl and Aredhel, born premature and abandoned by Aredhel for she feared Eöl because she bore not a son. Aredhel told Eöl she miscarried and so the scrolls shown no record of her birth and her younger brother Maeglin was only child of Eöl, for she was forgotton. But Aredhel did for a time hold faint hope that her daughter may have lived, but she never would know for sure.

Raven was discovered soon afterward by a scouting party of the men of Bëor when they first came into the lands of Beleriand. It was they who found her, and soon it was apparent that she was not dead. They gave her the name of Raven for her dark complexion and black crop of hair, and it was a flight of ravens hovering about where she lay in the grasses that led the men to her.

She was cared for and nursed to health and soon gained strength. But she was always small, and her dark skin, hair, and eyes were always apparent to the men. As she grew, she had trouble getting along with all but a few of the other children. One incident that took place was some of the Edain children tried to drown her in a river because she was different, but she learned to swim and went across on them. She feared water from that day forward.

Since she was shunned by her peers, she would watch and talk and ask questions of adults as much as they allowed her, and watched them in their trades. She especially enjoyed the visits of ones that were called Eldar, and the dwarves who they had befriended from the mountains. In this way she began learning skills at an early age, and it seemed she remembered it all.

As she grew to womanhood, she went with her parents to a place where the dwarves come to trade with the Eldar, and the Edain would attend also. She was seen by one of Thingols tradesmen and he thought her to be Tinuviel. From that time she took that name as her last, for she knew now that she was Eldar, but she knew not her line and bent her thought to know of her birth parents.

One day she bade farewell to the families who raised her and set out on her own, wandering from place to place. Through the years she gained ever more knowledge, both by teachers and by experience, and in her wanderings, she did what she had always had done in life from the beginning, survive.

The years passing grew heavy upon Raven, and as the days before the War of the Ring grew darker, her involvement in the affairs of men, long a passion of hers, burdened her as they would age and die. She would move about the lands as a shadowed vagabond staying not long in any one place.... maybe a year or two at the most. She could not bear to see great men, young and strong, grow old and wither. Too many she had loved, and all would fade so fast. Too many times she longed to be mortal, but the chains of her immortality held her.

As this story begins, Raven was making her way west to Bree, having escaped captivity at the hands of a rough hillman of Rhuadur. She had lost her freedom in a drunken game of cards after walking into their encampment. Despite all her years in Middle Earth, sometimes Raven would do stupid things. But as the dark days gathered its storm clouds of evil, Raven could feel the great tummult brewing, but could not forsee all that was about to fall...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NAME: Khul Argarth
AGE: 44 years of age
GENDER: male
RACE: Men, mixed heritage, living in Rhuadur. The Argarth clan had lineage going back to the Dunedain prince Daúremir, youngest son of King Eärendur who after the partition of Arnor, became king of Rhuadur in the year 861. But through the centuries and generations, the blood of the Argarth clan was much mingled with that of the hillmen of the Ettenmoors, and also that of Dunlandings who had come north.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Taller and bulkier than most men that lived in Rhuadur, his wide eyes and bellowing demeanor gave him a forceful presence. Complimented by his use of ancient armor, he considered himself a ruler of sorts and many followed him. But it was his dealings with those outside Rhuadur that established his power.
PAST/BACKGROUND: Growing up a son of a hunter, he learned much of living in the harsh wildlands. After his father was slain by a wolf, he would work hard to feed his mother and sister. When winter’s chill and sickness claimed both their lives, Khul moved about, living with other families of his clan. Through shrewd methods, he gained defacto recognition as head of clan Argarth, and his voice drew other clan leaders to him. But the men of Rhuadur were few and fragmented, and Khul would go out into the lands west and south and there made friends with outlaws, shady men, and others of ill repute. Though Khul was considered a leader of men, the numbers of his followers in Rhuadur outside his own clan were small.
SKILLS: Khul was shrewd in business dealings, often submitting his service for that which could be gained for himself. His swordsmanship was fair and his bowmanship good, but skill with knives is where he excelled in weaponry.
~ Hunter ~
NAME: Morghan Lachlan
AGE: middle aged (by human standards)
GENDER:female
RACE: Her mother, Brieta, had claimed to have Noldorian blood and came from the Ered Luin region. Ruark Lachlan was her father, a Ranger from the northern reaches of Eriador. Both have passed away.
LOCATION:Morghan once lived in the Chetwood Forest near edge of the Midgewater. There she lived a life of solitude for many years, seeing few local people except for those that sought her out for her knowledge of healing herbs or those foolish enough to come seeking charms to solve their woes. Many whispered words have been spoken by those in the region; some claimed her healing potions worked, others spoke harshly of the woman who lived alone. She was known to have visitors from distant lands stop by her dwelling in the forest. As the story begins she is at the Forsaken Inn.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Fair skinned, but tanned, tall, with a slender muscular build. Her eyes are gray-green and her hair deep reddish brown. Morghan’s coloring is the same as her fathers.
PAST/BACKGROUND: After her parents death (her father in an ambush by orcs, her mother, bitter and lonely on hearing of his death, died from a wasting illness that Morghan could find no cure for), she traveled alone before settling in Chetwood. Friends of her father and mother have been known to visit her small cabin in the forest, bringing news of the outside world and herbs they have picked up on their travels for her to study. She has heard rumors of the darkness spreading across the countryside, but thus far it has not concerned her. Before the story of Mist of Eiador starts, she was found in Ost-in-Edhil by Ewen Thane.
SKILLS: Healing, skilled with a knife, has some of the in-born senses of the elvish races, but they are not sharply defined. Her father attempted to train her in the ways of the Rangers, but she showed no interest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NAME: Ewen Thane
AGE: 54 years of age
GENDER: male

RACE: A Dúnedain Ranger of the North, he was born in Hills of Evendim to parents who both belonged to a small clan of Dúnedain who resided there.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Ewen Thane is around 6 feet or so tall, broad shouldered with a lean, lanky build with dark, shoulder length hair liberally streaked with grey. His face is weather-worn and tanned with a hawk shaped nose and a strong chin. His grey eyes are hooded except when he’s amused and then they come alive.

PAST/BACKGROUND: Raised in a clan of the Dúnedain, it was natural for Ewen to become a Ranger. His father, Eton Thane was friends with Morghan’s father, Ruark Lachlan and was with him when he was slain. He has called Eriador his home and as stayed in those lands most of his life, though he has traveled to Rhovanion, Rohan and Gondor.

SKILLS: As a Ranger he was taught woodland lore and skills to survive, stealth, hunting, tracking and basic herb lore. He is knowledgeable in weaponry skills with sword and short blade, as well as a staff, but it is in archery where he excels, though he is not on the same level as the great elvish archers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NAME: Michrel Lachlan
AGE: 34
GENDER: Male
RACE: His mother, Brieta, claimed to have Noldorian blood and came from the Ered Luin region and his father, Ruark Lachlan, was a Ranger from the northern reaches of Eriador. Both have passed away.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tall and slim with a wiry build, his fair skin and finely chiseled features are so like his dead mothers with the same dark grey eyes that she had. His dark, nearly black, hair is worn long, tied back with a leather cord.
PAST/BACKGROUND: Trained in the ways of a Ranger by his father. He had just begun service with them when the group of Rangers that his father served with was ambushed by orcs. Young and untested in battle, he ran when he saw that they were outnumbered. In disgrace with the Rangers and himself, he had traveled for a time in the east, looking to prove to himself that he wasn’t a coward.
Michrel, having heard rumors of the Bloodcrows during his travels, returned to Eriador sometime in 2989 with the intention of infiltrating the Blood Crows. Once in, his plan was to learn their ways and then leave, reporting back to the Rangers. With this act he had hoped to regain their trust. The only other person who was privy to this was Ewen Thane, whom he met by chance in Bree. At the time of his meeting with Ewen, Michrel had already joined the ranks of the Blood Crows. Sworn to secrecy, Ewen has told no one of Michrel’s plan but the two have remained in contact whenever possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NAME: Olben Hawkins
AGE: 50 years of age
GENDER: male

RACE: A Dúnedain Ranger of the North, he was born in Hills of Evendim to parents who both belonged to the same small clan of Dúnedain as Ewen.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Olben Hawkins, a large, barrel-chested man is nearly 6ft tall but appears taller because of his well muscled, bearish build. He wears his wavy, reddish-brown hair long, pulled back and tied loosely at the nape of his thick neck with a leather thong, has a full beard to match, with eyes the same color. Though nearly the same age as Ewen, his hair shows little sign of grey. Normally fair skinned, Olben’s complexion takes on a ruddy hue during the warmer months as his face and arms become liberally sprinkled with freckles. He usually sounds gruff, but contrary to his physical size he is gentle natured except when roused to anger.

PAST/BACKGROUND: Nothing exceptional so far except for his long standing friendship since childhood with Ewen Thane. As this character develops I may add more.

SKILLS
: He has same knowledge of wood lore and weaponry as most Rangers; his weapon of choice is a heavy, double edged broadsword which he wields two handedly in close combat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NAME: Durham Allendale
AGE: 35 years of age
GENDER: male
RACE: A Ranger of the North from a settlement in Forlindon.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Durham Allendale is of average height and weight (on the lean side) and has dark blond hair with deep blue eyes. He likes to keep his face clean shaven (except for a small moustache) but when he can’t, his beard is light brown in color.
PAST/BACKGROUND: Born in Forlindon in the shadows of the eastern slopes of the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains), Durham has recently arrived in the eastern lands of Eriador. He has accompanied Olben and Ewen on their scouting rounds only a few times in the past to learn more of the threat of darkness that is slowly creeping over the land of Eriador. He is married with two young children back in Forlindon and hopes to return there soon.
SKILLS: He has same knowledge of wood lore and weaponry as most Rangers; his weapon of choice is a spear which he throws with deadly accuracy.
~ Galadwen Aranel ~
Name: Galadwen Aranel
Age: 155
Gender: Female
Race: Half-Elven
Physical Description: Willowy in stature, Galadwen is fair of face, despite her age. Her hair is dark, the color of the raven and falls to her waist. Much of the time it hangs in a soft plait down her back. She stands 5'7" and is seen wearing long flowing robes in many different hues. Her eyes are deep brown and her soul seems to shine brightly there. Child-like in demeanor, she can often be seen dancing barefooted in fields of lavender. She is wont to walk in the surf in the moonlight and rides her white horse, Moonstone along the river banks.
Past/Background: Galadwen, half elven, is the elder daughter of Cirian, a human, and Nanetha, an elf. She was born and raised in HexemShire, a quaint secluded village located just beyond the outskirts of Rivendell. Her lineage has a rich past, and can be traced back to the Druids. Her father hails from the Clan McEldrid and fought beside Elrond in many a bloody battle to save Middle Earth. Her mother is daughter to Nestoralim, the witch healer from HexemShire, who, for centuries was the matriarch of the village. Her sister, Nestriliel, also a witch healer, can often be seen with Galadwen strolling along the path to Rivendell's falls. Galadwen was present when Frodo and Sam returned from Mount Doom, battered and broken. She assisted Elrond and the other healers of Imladris in caring for Frodo and Sam and was instrumental in their recovery. She is a respected witch healer and extremely skilled in the ways of the cunning arts. Loved and cherished by Elves and Dwarves alike, she is frequently called upon to help the ailing and tormented with stone healing and herbal medicine. Her husband, Maethor, a warrior in his own right, fought bravely beside Aragorn in numerous battles, taking many a nasty blow from knife and club in Aragorn's defense. Maethor and Galadwen often frequent Rivendell to spend time with the Elves and to partake of their humble repast and warm hospitality.
Skills: Aside from her gift of healing, Galadwen is skilled in bowmanship, and attributes this to the patient mentoring of Legolas GreenLeaf. Legolas gifted her with a long bow, fashioned by the Elves of Lothlorien as a tribute to her swift learning skills. Much stronger than she appears, she is known to wield a claymore sword as deftly as any of her male cousins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ Claymore ~

Name: Eradan Goffan although the folk of Bree know him better as Claymore
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Race: Dunadan Ranger with a few drops of Rohirrim blood mixed in the lot.

Physical description: Eradan has rather broad shoulders and stands 6'2" tall. He's lean and lanky. He has short-cut brown hair but it bleaches to some sort of dark blond in the summer. He has sea-grey eyes which seem to be constantly alert. He has a tanned skin and many little burn scars on his arms from the countless hours he has spent working in his father's smithy when he was younger. He has strong chiseled features though still softened by youth. He usually wears practical clothes in dark green and brown tones. He owns a little recurve bow and his long claymore he called Song because of the musical sounds she makes when you strike her. He also wears a long dagger and a little knife he uses for eating and carving.

Past/Background: Eradan is a Dunadan of the North and was born in the same Dunadan settlement as Ewen and Olben in 2973. His father is a smith who makes weapons for the Rangers, his mother is a healer whose abilities are often sought out by injured Rangers. He has an older sister, called Mairen, who became a weaver. His father tried to teach him his craft but it soon became clear that Eradan was more interested in wielding weapons than making them. He began training at sixteen and was taken under Ewen's wing. At the age of twenty he was considered skilled enough and he entered the Rangers ranks.He soon became known as Claymore among the folk of Bree because of his claymore,Song, he always wears on his back and the skilled use he makes of her. Song was a gift from his father when he became a ranger. Eradan is a rather quiet and withdrawn young man who seldom speaks unless he has something useful to say. He's rather shy in the presence of women. He hasn't much experience yet but he is a clear thinker and doesn't let his judgement be clouded by emotions. He's cautious and he's doesn't let his emotions show. He doesn't make friends easily but his few friends can count on his undying loyalty. He usually tries to solve quarrels with words but when words are useless he fights with a mindless efficiency.

Skills: Eradan is a good woodsman, like all rangers and he can survive in the woods for weeks. He’s a good tracker and he can walk through the forest without leaving a trace. He’s a very skilled swordsman and he wreaks havoc with his long claymore. He’s a decent archer and a good rider. He knows a bit about herbs and learned the rudiments of metalworking from his father before he began training for a ranger. He loves to carve things from wood and when he has nothing else to do it's usually what he's doing.

Name: Elenien Faoileán though in Bree they nicknamed her Rapier

Age: 24

Gender: Female

Race: Dunadan of the North

Physical description: Elenien is a rather small young woman. She is only 5'7" tall and has the wiry and well-knit frame of a long-distance runner. Her hair is of a rich brown color and it reaches well past her shoulders so she usually wears it in a high pony-tail. She has a heart-shaped face with mischievous green eyes. Her skin is rather darkly tanned even for someone who spends much of her time outside. Like all rangers she prefers to wear brown and dark green clothes. She owns a longbow, a iron-studded quarterstaff as tall as she is t and a slender rapier made by her uncle Varadan, Eradan's father. She also has a long dagger she uses as a main-gauche when fighting with her rapier. It would be more fitting to say a main-droite though because she holds it in her right hand, being left-handed. She further owns a small knife she uses to eat and to do other little tasks with though she uses it as a weapon too when needed.

Past/ Background: Elenien was born in a small fisher’s village on the shores of lake Evendim at two days riding from Dimwold. Rían, Eradan’s mother and her mother, Yávien, are sisters and Elenien is Eradan’s elder by two years. As a child she liked to tease her shy cousin and loved to make him blush just by saying ‘Hello’ to him. When they both were a bit older they would go climbing in the Hills or Evendim or sail on the lake when their families visited and they pulled many a prank together. They developed a deep friendship during those years.Elenien is an only child and her father, Hallatan , trained her to become a ranger by lack of a son who could follow in his footsteps. She was an eager student and she couldn't imagine to become something else than a ranger.She has been an independent ranger for three years now though she had already gone on a few missions with her father before that. The folk of Bree have nicknamed her Rapier, though she uses her quarterstaff more often. Quarterstaff doesn't sound as interesting as Rapier.

Personality: Elenien is a rather merry person, with a quick smile and in a relaxed situation it is almost impossible to shut her up. She has a slightly sarcastic sense of humor and is quick to make fun of herself. If there is serious business at hand however she is a very different person. She has a quick mind and is swift to see links. As soon as she clearly knows what to do she'll take action without hesitation. She is sometimes a bit too quick however and can be reckless. She has a strong will and tends to be stubborn at times. Once she has set herself a goal she will never back down until its done. She is often the one who is keeping the others going when there is few hope left.

Skills: Elenien is like all rangers a skilled tracker, hunter and woodswoman. She's almost impossible to find in the woods when she doesn't want to be found. She is skilled with various weapons but her favourite still remains her tall quarterstaff followed closely by her rapier and dagger. She is a fair shot with her bow and can shoot a bird in full flight when there is need to. Elenien is rather small and not very strong, so in combat she usually relies on her quickness, her wits and her agility. She doesn't shun dirty tricks, like locks, sweeps and kicks below the belt (she usually can't kick much higher than her opponent's chest anyway) and is known for her irritating habit of insulting her opponents in combat. She usually manages to make her enemy so furious that they let go of every caution which makes it rather easy for her to beat them. Elenien is also a good long-distance runner and can even outrun some horses on the very long distances.

It has been a long time since I have not written RP... But maybe you remember my name.

I have not yet read the first few posts or Shadow over Arnor but am of course willing to do so.

If you want an example of my writing, a few links:

Detailled character story in the Scriptorium

I've been writing Hades in this RP

And the hobbit Tibodom Took in this RP

As for characters, my main RP character used to be nienor-niniel but her time-line would not fit here. I thought of creating eventually a new character, or using Hades. Usually my characters are quite worked out.

I know the rules of RP, although I have left TORC for a long while. I miss writing, though. I have no intent of chatting or socialising again, but I do miss writing.

So if you will have me, I will read my way through the threads first.

Hello Nin.

The Prancing Pony Forum is, and always has been, my comfort zone. I hope your return to Torc and this forum is pleasant and enjoyable. :)

I’m familiar with your writing (I’ve read a lot of role-play stories in my time), and remember seeing you around the boards before. You also made an appearance in the Prancing Pony Inn thread and we wrote together for a short time so I have a bit of a feeling for your writing firsthand.

After you have read through the threads, feel free to ask any questions of either myself or Raven. My e-mail is in my profile and I believe Raven’s is in hers, or leave any questions here and one of us will answer.

Welcome to Mists of Eriador. :)

I am very glad. I have been looking for an RP, but as both of you have a full life with children, a job and a "patchwork"-family. So I was looking for something of high quality, yet not too fast and maybe allowing me a new character to play with.

I have just made an outprint of "Mists of Eriador" as far as it goes and will read it today, then think about a character.

Hiya,
I would like to join in too if you would have me.
I've just begun RPing but I've some experience at writing stories.
I've already read 'Mist of Eriador' and I'll start with reading 'Shadow over Arnor' if I may join.
My character will probably be Eradan, a ranger of the north who's known as Claymore among the folk of Bree.
I'm already playing an older, post-war version of him at the Green Dragon Inn.
He was born some fort-five years before the War of the Ring. That will make him twenty-two at the time of 'Mist of Eriador'

Hello Claymore,

Thank you for your interest and I should add, welcome to the Prancing Pony and Torc, since I see you are fairly new here. :)

Twenty-two is a bit young for a Ranger, but if you can make him fit in the story, I guess it will work.

I’ve just added a couple of posts with two new characters (Olben and Durham) who are at Imladris now. If, while building your character’s history you would like to include a connection or previous knowledge of either them, or Ewen Thane who is also a Ranger, it might be of help to you. I will be posting bio’s on each one of them in the Character Thread soon.

Hunter/Morghan~Lachlan

Oh, I almost forgot! I’ll be posting as both Hunter and Morghan in this thread if that’s okay with everyone. :)

May I join?

Hail, Hunter~
I am interested in joining the RP here. I will be Galadwen Aranel, a half-elven woman whose lineage is rich in healers and warriors, and whose kin have resided in Middle Earth for centuries. I have had experience writing outside this forum, and my strong point is poetry. I would very much like to join this story if you will have me. I respectfully ask your blessing...Le hannon mellon.

Greetings Galadwen Aranel, :)

Thank you also for your interest in our story and welcome to Torc.

Your character bio is interesting and well thought out. If you can fit your character to our story you are welcome to join, but I feel I must add that I hope you have read the story and this OOC thread, especially the first post.

Mists of Eriador takes place in the year 2995 of the Third Age, 24 years before the events in LOTR so any mention of your character aiding in the healing of Sam and Frodo cannot come into play. Also, as Raven stated, a working knowledge of a previous role-play (Shadow over Arnor) is necessary since this story is basically a sequel and characters and/or events from that role-play may be mentioned from time to time. The link for Shadow is included in the first post of the OOC. We ask that you read through it at least once.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here and one of us will try to answer them. Raven and I are not always able to be on the message board on a daily basis, so please have patience. :)

Hiya Hunter and thanks for the the welcome.
I'm sorry that I only answer now but I've just returned from a three weeks trip to Switzerland and Internet wasn't available high up in the mountains. :D
As for my character he hails from Evendim too and he just became a ranger two years before the events. Maybe there can be some pupil-teacher relation between Eradan and one of the other Rangers. It's just a suggestion. Eradan's father is a smith and makes weapons for the Rangers so Eradan is familiar with a few of them.
I'll soon post a character description I just have to make a few things fit. I only have to remove a few things that will happen to him after the War of the Ring.

Welcome, welcome, and welcome! :)

Nienor-niniel, I look forward to your character post!

Claymore, great Ranger character! Surely Eradan, or at least Eradans folks would know, or know of the other rangers mentioned in the Shadow Over Arnor... Arkaeth, Almarian, Halasìan, and Elendur. Of these four, most was written in that RP of Almarian and Halasian, but Arkaeth and Elendur played a major part early on, becoming background characters after the writers abandoned the RP.

Galadwen, I like your characters beautiful description! I have a question on though on the background. You say "Her lineage has a rich past, and can be traced back to the Druids." I am unaware the Druids were ever mentioned by Tolkien as being in Middle Earth. Should I assume you meant the Drúath?

Also, it is cool for characters to have flaws. As for posting, Hunter and I do request any story post at least fills a monitor screen, (not including signatures).

Hunter, of course its ok to post as Hunter or any other of your character names!

I have a link in my sig to my general character profile, but will copy it to the character thread and add a few details pertaining to this time.

Cheers!

Hiya back Claymore.

The only question I have about your characters bio is how he is known in Bree. Is he known as a Ranger? Rangers during the time period were still regarded with suspicion and considered disreputable in and around the Shire and Bree. There is a very good article about Rangers in the reading room. (http://www.theonering.com/reading_room/articles_list.sd?catid=190).

Mmmm…. a pupil-teacher relation? Sounds okay with me. :) Which Ranger will you choose to be the teacher, one of characters from Shadow over Arnor, one you will create or one that I have created?

If you choose one of mine, you’ll have to come up with a plausible way to write yourself as joining up with them since a pupil might not be traveling on his own (just a thought).

Any of the three I write for would be willing except for Durham. He is from Forlindon and new to the area himself. Don’t forget, Olben, Ewen and Durham were together and then split up after being in Ost-in-Edhil. Olben and Durham went to Imladris and Ewen is at the Forsaken Inn outside of Bree. Ewen’s whereabouts are unknown at this time by Olben as already stated, but I have written that Ewen intends to meet up with Olben and Durham outside Bree in the near future.

Ewen, Olben and Durham’s backgrounds are pretty sketchy at this point. I prefer to fill in bits of background information as I create new characters and since not much was written about Ewen before Arnor ended, I purposely left all of them pretty basic. This way I can build past relationships that do not run contrary to a history that has already set down before I have had time to think about them and flesh out their characters.

Raven! Great to see Raven’s bio! I've read many of the stories (but not all) concerning your character. :)

What I mean is that Eradan was nicknamed Claymore like Aragorn was nicknamed Strider. The folk of Bree don't know his name so when they are gossiping they call him Claymore. They know very well he is a Ranger. With the hilt of his claymore always sticking over his shoulder and his brown clothes it's kind of obvious. :D
As for the teacher -pupil relation I thought about Ewen of Olben. I thought that Eradan might come from the same settlement as they and he saw them coming and going in his father's smithy when they needed their weapons repaired. They might have known him as the mute little kid who observed them with wide-eyed avidity and when he was older they trained him. He is now their equal in skill but not in experience and if he discovers something he doesn't understand he prefers to win their advice.

Does that sound okay?

Sure it does Claymore. :) Sorry for misunderstanding.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

You’re welcome Galadwen. :) Careful reading of the story (and the back-story, in this case) is important, in this and any other Rp thread, as is character development and involvement. Not only does a character have to fit within the bounds of the story (time-line, etc) but the story has to fit the characters.

Much thought has gone into what has been written so far by Raven and myself. “Mists of Eriador” is being done in the old style of Rp writing that went on in the earlier ages of Torc. We don’t communicate with each other about what our characters are going to do or what is supposed to happen, there is no preplanning going on behind the scenes. In fact, the only planning we’ve done so far is to agree to write a sequel to the Shadow over Arnor story as mentioned in the first post of this thread and to write it in the old style of Rp. Sound confusing? Lol. It can be! But then we are both familiar with that style of writing. That’s one reason we encourage asking questions.

Good post Claymore! :) Thanks for moving the brewmaster hobbit back to Bree. He was going to be a character I was going to use had nobody showed interest in posting in the old Forsaken Inn thread.
I should have a post up this weekend that will maybe expand the story some as far as Raven is concerned, and will be introducing a new character. I will also try and add some bits from Shadow Over Arnor if things work out.
I have not forgotten about this story, just having real life interfere with my creativity. But I may be getting through all that now.

Nice opening post Claymore. It will be a pleasure writing with you and seeing what you bring to the story. :)

Raven- Mmmm, a new character? Khul sounds very interesting and I can hardly wait to see what you have in store for the story with his introduction. :D

My muses have been working overtime in all sorts of directions and as soon as I have time to put them down on paper. there will be another dimension added, that hopefully meets with everyones approval.

My apologies, Lady Raven.

I neglected to remember that a lock would disable your ability to edit/copy the coded text.

I have unlocked the Character thread so retrieving the coded text is possible.

In the interests of making it easy for your readers to find the Character Bio's, I have a suggestion.

I can move all the Character Bios, fully coded, into the end of your very first post.

This will place them at the beginning of the OOC, all in one place.

Your readers will not have to search the entire first page of the OOC but only open the first post.

Let me know if this would be a workable idea for you.

I hope no one minds the small bit of back-tracking time wise in my post. I had something half finished before Raven posted and didn't want to leave it out. It still sounds a little disjointed to me, but ii anyone feels it still needs a bit of tweaking let me know.

Er yeah sorry for the rather short and crappy post but my writing muse decided to take some holidays. Hope it advanced the RP though.
Hunter, I hope you didn't mind that I gave the settlement where Eradan and Ewen come from a name. Played a bit around with the words 'Even' and 'Dim' to make a decent name.
I would like to introduce new character if you all don't mind. It will be Elenien, the female ranger that Eradan mentioned.
She's Eradan's cousin and three years older than he is.
Will post a bio as soon as you approve and school allows.:D

Claymore, it was a fine post. :) You handled the exchange between Ewen and Eradan very well. And I like the name Dimwold, it rolls off the tongue easily and fits rather nice.

Don't worry too much about the length of your post as long as the content is good. Sometime it’s hard to write a lengthy post and sometimes it’s easy *shrug* what else can I say? Each person has their own style and who is to say which style is right or wrong? All that really matters, in my opinion, is that every post brings something to the story. Sometimes my posts are overly long, stretched out with descriptive sentences and such and I find it hard to end the post properly. See? We all have doubts, so again, don’t worry. Settle in and make yourself comfortable, with both your character and your writing and hopefully it will become easier.

New characters? :D lol. You’re talking to someone who loves to introduce new characters! Go right ahead, you don’t have to ask permission, just be sure not to bite off more than you can handle! Characters add flavor and interest to any story whether they stick around for only a few posts or the whole story. Also, not every character needs to have a bio. For example- say you plan on introducing a new character but aren’t sure yet on what (if any) role they will play in the future, a short history might be able to be worked into your post. Then, if you end up liking that character and find them becoming an integral character, you can always write up a bio for them later.

So, you’re in school? Tell us a little about yourself if you like. The OOC can be used for writers to get to know each other too, as long as they don’t deteriorate into chat threads.

Yes, we are a bit more freeform so do not require a bio. Also, to me what makes a good post is a balanced procession, be it one paragraph or several. I have had days when I tend to post, ahve some thoughts about it, but get on and stare at a blank screen, or write something only to re-arrange and edit and mess with it to "make it right". Sometimes I can type out a good fitting post on the fly. As for me and writing other characters, I am only now trying my hand at writing a different character. We will see how it goes. I always loved Hunters characters!

I think I will read up and see if I can formulate a post! :)

I am sorry for my long absence, summer and life have hit, but now that school has started back I have a more regular Internet rhythm again.

As for a character, I wondered about writing a hobbit from the Shire who is currently in Bree - I thought of a young lad, preferably a Brandybuck, who has learned in the brewery of his father, but as he cannot yet inherit it, has now come to help out in Bree where lives a distant uncle third degree motherwise of his.

I think a lighter character can be a balance to the RP and a hobbit, unaware of many foldings in Middle-Earth, interesting in his reactions. And well, I like to write hobbits.

Good to see you again nienor-niniel! A hobbit character sounds like a good idea. It would be good to have a lighter character for I am guessing that Hunter and I both tend to lean toward a darker story. Maybe he could be related to the hobbit brewmaster (Teddy Largebarrel) I briefly wrote in the early days of the Forsaken Inn thread. I did not really develop him, and he managed to get back to Bree in the writing. Just something to consider.
