I'd find a library and borrow it for the period between ROTK leaving the cinema, and the DVD coming out. It's full of poems and weird languages.

Hello Lady_of_Rohan. Nice to make your acquaintance (bows deeply).

I think it would be a very good idea for you to consider reading the books now that all three films have come out. If you struggle with language, you should really read a book called 'The Hobbit' by the same author before. Some of the people you know from the film, like Gandalf, Elrond and a much younger Bilbo Baggins are in there. I think you will like it.

Evenstar_Elfstone: you mean someone's asked the question before? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Ari-Anna: I know it's long! I saw all three books in one volume, and I thought it was a Bible! I'm not too sure. My mom got it for me, hoping to encourage me to read, but I could hardly get past the first bit.

I mean, how long are they going to talk about hobbits? Get to Legolas already, geeze. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

As to the Hobbit, there's a really nice picture version... but it doesn't have Legolas in it either... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

EDIT: And I looked in the index, and it doesn't even MENTION Figwit! How good could a book be without Figwit in it? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>

I don't think there's any way any stoopfid book could ever live up to the masterpiece that is Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.

I can't believe some people, they'll do anything to make a buck. I saw the book on shelves mere DAYS after I saw the first movie! It can't be very faithful if it's that big and they only took a day or two to reference the movie.

i agree with Stormy, Tolkien was on a pointless venture trying to cope with the magnitude of PJ's films, i mean, who does he think he is? the author of The Lord of the Rings??

Apparently it was written by some old woman named Sue Tolkien. I know I won't be reading the books again anytime soon! There's this guy named Tom Bombadil and he hops around singing at the top of his lungs. Its SOOOOOOO stupid!

I started to read the books, but when I got to the whole part with Frodo moving to a new house, and the Old forest, and everything, I knew it had to be some stupid kind of scam to get money from the people that liked the movies.

I mean, come on, we're smart enough to know the difference between th real Lord of the Rings stuff, and a take-off, right?

Yeah, y'know, this old lady, Sue Tolkien, she thinks that some wierd dudes called 'rangers' come to Helm's Deep and on the Paths of the Dead. How stupid is that? And she has Leggy and Aragorn singing all the time. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Geez, get a life...

Yeah, I mean, its just so obviously a scam. But who would want to write a three volume scam...and who would read one? I don't think I want to spend my money on such a useless thing...that, and I don't think I want to spend my hours decifering such weird languages.

Well it is the Bible for Lord of the Rings stuff...

And long but if you dont read the appendix stuff its not too bad, and you can skip a few chapters...and no need to read the hobbit first, read it last or just dont read it at all...and I think the Silmarillion is just a waste of time..it has no relevance on any of it. And as for the unfinished tales, heck they are unfinished, and pretty boring.

I'd just stick to the movies...I mean it pretty much gets everything but the scouring of the shire right, and that whole scene is just a waste anyway.

It seems really weird that anyone would want to read some scam by this "Tolken" person...I mean, come on. What's the point of having Legolas and Aragorn in this thing if they go around singing? I heard Aragorn's called "Strider" or some junk like that...you'd think that if someone was trying to do a scam they'd at least do it right!

And that Tom Bonbadill or whatever his name is...where the heck did he come from?

There's also this guy named Beefergond or something like that who saves Faramir's life! What's the point in that? Gandalf does it! And Eomer names Aragorn Wingfoot. How can Eomer name Aragorn something? That is SOOOOOOO screwed up!

Hardly. You'd be better off reading something like Robert Jordan. He is a writing god what with all those heaving bosoms and brooding.

This Tolkien guy, honestly don't know where PJ drug him up, couldn't write his way out of a papter bag! If you're hired to write the book companion to a movie, you really aught to stay as close to the story as possible, right?

right hamlet. I mean, she really screwed it up!!! I think we should spit on this book and then send an angry letter to this 'Sue Tolkin'. Let's get one thing straight. The movie is awesome! why did Sue have to go and ruin them?

But doesn't Sam call Aragorn "Strider" in the movies too? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0> So, are you saying that the book is faithful to the movies at some points, but in other places it goes off on a totally different angle? I'm so confused, and still wondering if reading the thing is even worth it.
