Ugh, mine's Mîm the Dwarf..... I hate him.

He just cowered at Turin's feet with absolutely no honor, whatsoever, to speak of. He betrayed the outlaws based upon his unjustified hatred of Beleg. He has no honor and absolutely 0 respect in my eyes. He also with his last little dastardly dweebish heeby act, he cursed the treasure. Basically ensuring the Sack of Doriath.

I was SO happy when Hurin just killed him.

Well said Kel.

The Watcher of the Water had more persona.

Grima. He actively does bad for his own gain. Useless, nameless people in my opinion, are like rocks. They're there. But folks like Grima cause pain and suffering and death just to feed their own egos, which I'm not okay with.

Yeah, Grima's pretty despicable. I did feel sorry for him at the end, though, after Saruman's treatment of him; Frodo certainly did. But those vengeful ones among us probably figured he got what he deserved. I'm kind of divided on that.

I'd say my least favorite character is either Melkor,Sauron, or Grima wormtounge. Melkor is my least favorite since he has no personality and he basically caused all the death and destruction in the world while Sauron tried to take over everything Melkor just wanted destruction. I hate Sauron for the same reasons I hate Melkor because of his evilness but I only hate him less because he was entranced into evil(not by Magic or anything but persuasion) by Melkor and served him intially. As for wormtongue he was just an egomaniac, an entrancer, and an unpleasant guy in general.

Feänor, Denethor or Morgoth. They caused so much grief out of sheer pride

Id say Denethor caused the least misery because while the others caused a war that almost wiped out the Noldor and Sindar Denethor merely (meaning compared to the others) mismanaged a country.

Yeah that really was terrible especially in the movies. They did a good job showing how much of a bad parent he was.

I have to agree ! I also do not like Tom Bombadil. Sincerely I have always found him very very boring and meaningless character. But I like to think that all is part of the Tolkien project and world. So..........

Tom isn't the most interesting character but wormtounge is far worse in that hes boring and bad at the same time.

There is little accounting for taste. I think Tom Bombadil is my most treasured of Tolkien's characters. There is a strangeness, an idiosyncrasy to him that sets him apart from all others. He belongs to a parallel tale, distinct from the world of Elves and Men, as the ineffectiveness of the ring over him illustrates.

Yet I understand how he can irritate. All those silly rhymes can jar when read on the page. However...

I have been listening to Rob Inglis' narration of the unabridged Lord of the Rings, and it is through the spoken word that Tom comes to life. I think this is deliberate of Tolkien. Tom epitomises an older Middle Earth, before the coming of Elves and Men, and like an oral tradition preceding a written one, and rhyme preceding prose, Tom's kaleidoscopic utterences hint at a different age, earthy and lowbrow, not "tainted" by Elvish intellectual encroachment. Again, I think it is no accident that Tolkien has Sam say, on the hobbits' leaving of him on the road to Bree,

"I am sorry to take leave of Master Bombadil. He's a caution and no mistake. I reckon we may go a good deal further and see naught better, nor queerer."

Sam, in fact, bears some resemblance to Tom; tied to his land, a gardener, and inventor of nonsense poetry (the Troll ditty)... So, in conclusion, and apologies for going a little off topic, to really appreciate Tom, I'd say listen to the audiobook, or read his parts out loud (but not in your local library!).

As for my least favourite character, it has to be Ioreth. Her chatter is like the noise from an untuned radio; deeply irritating.

Yes I've always wondered how Tom fit into the larger mythos of middle earth but as Tolkien didn't show us before he died I guess we will never know

My least favorite character is...well, there's one or two - Eothain, that annoying dude with Eomer who mocks the Three Hunters: Bill Ferny, who is just utterly despicable: Mim the Dwarf, who is the epitome of everything evil and wicked in this world: Thingol, for obvious reasons. I'm conflicted about Melian, because, while I can understand her grief, she literally opened the barriers of Doriath and then abandoned Middle-earth after Thingol's death, which is just a nasty thing to do. Grima Wormtongue is absolutely awful, but I like to believe he was just made that way by Saruman. Eol is a really bad guy - I really don't like him at all. And Celegorm and Curufin are both as annoying as all get-out.

Yikes. 18 years is a long time...

Anyway, my current least favourite character is Gildor. He knows full well what is pursuing Frodo and company, yet does absolutely nothing in terms of escorting Frodo to Bree or Rivendell. He even shows up at the end of the book, three years later, so it is not as if he had to reach the Havens immediately.

Gildor is so frustrating: me and my sister are doing a read-through of LOTR (not for the first time), and we got up to the Gildor part a few days ago, and we were both thinking the same thing: "This guy has been wandering around in the Shire for at least seventeen years, since he mentions saying farewell to Bilbo on the very spot where he was talking to Frodo, and he doesn't go to the Havens for three more years - so what has he been doing all this time, and why can't he help? He's just leisurely strolling around doing nothing!"
