Right. Sorry for the delay.

How are Gollum and Smaug alike (and I don't mean that they both live in caves)?

1. Both have a weakness for treasure. Smaug, of the dwarven gold and Gollum for his only 'treasure', the Ring.
2. Both acquired their treasure, by killing people.
3. Both of them have their treasure taken from them. (in Smaug's case Bilbo took only a cup)
4. Both search for the 'thief', which ultimately results in their downfall.
5. Both of their original names start with 'Sm'.
6. Both are played by motion-capture and are supposed to be awesome! :P :D

That's all what I can think of for the moment.

Of course, our resident Gollum expert floored that one. :)

They're both villians.
They both have keen senses of smell.
They both fall to their deaths (Smaug to the lake, Gollum to the fire).
They are both Slinkers and Stinkers.
Both lived in the bottom of a mountain for some time.
They are both the only representatives of their races seen in the books.
Neither one minds the dark.

 I actually considered that, but I decided to say it anyway. It's true for the main group I play with on TORC, even if not exactly for this building.

Got it. You're asking about the origin of names?

Both the names have common Old English and Germainic roots. Smugan.

Am I right?

I use to read a bit extra on some characters that I like, so I knew the root word for "Smeagol", Smugan. Seeing that Smaug sounds similar, I thought it MAY have similar origins. So I did check out Smaug's origin from the net (no secrets kept :D).

I won't be here for some time. So if anybody wants to put forth the next question, go on. :D

Welcome back, Denethor! :-)

The answer is Dís, the mother of Kili and Fili.

Question: What did the Isle of Númenor resemble in shape?

A star.

Q. Galadriel was what to Elrond? (in terms of relations).

They were also sort of cousins several times removed, since they are both descended from the original Elves (Olwë and Elwë). :bookworm:

True (and there are multiple routes up the family trees, all of which give me a headache), but mother in law was really what I was after. :P

I think it is one of those old Mannish superheroes. I'm going to say Turin.

There might be more than one right answer, but I was thinking of a later era than Túrin ...

OK... since it's specified as being dwarf mines, it's unlikely to be a dwarf, and it's from a later era.

Arvedui? He'd have need to hide.

Yep, your turn :)

Appendix A, The North-kingdom and the Dúnedain:
For a while Arvedui hid in the tunnels of the old dwarf-mines near the far end of the Mountains, but he was driven at last by hunger to seek the help of the Lossoth, the Snowmen of Forochel.

That would be Khim, Min's other son, the one who wasn't slain by one of Turin's outlaw company.
