A Place to say "Thank you."

Postby prmiller » Sun Mar 06, 2005 10:03 pm

Dear Mods and Admins...and all.
What stellar people you are!
In this world where praise and admiration is twisted into words like
apple-polishing and...other less polite terms...
genuine admiration and appreciation gets shunted aside.
Not today.
I am writing to be thankful.
Largely.
Hugely.
Immensely thankful.
For patience in the face of hurt feelings.
For getting TORC running when it stops.
For maintenancing this immense place...and often thanklessly.

Not today.

Today, walk out into the sunshine and know this...
a host of people, beginning with one voice...
says

"Thank you."

...there may or may not be hugs, depending on cultural appropriateness.

Bright blessings,
Parm :)

I would like to add my thanks as well: for creating, maintaining, and improving this site. Without you, my circle of friends and my own personal development would have been much less than they are.

So there it is...
the single stone sends ripples
and the ripples spread
and as they spread
the simple deed
touches more and more...
now do you see why we love TORC?
It is such a lovely pond!

Jon, Ted...IE, crispy, and all the mods...

I thank you from the very bottom of my heart, and I support you and yet, I cannot find the words to describe how grateful I am to you, for TORC, your time, money, words of wisdom, and your hope. Thank you :)

I, too, thank Jon, Ted...IE, crispy, and all the mods from the very bottom of my heart for TORC. It's a thankless, unpaid task and I for one have only been pointing out the negatives today when there have been countless positives in the past. I don't want to lose sight of that, and I never will.

The only trouble is, I don't know this place any more. This website, here and now is not the TORC for which I am thankful for. I'm totally at a loss.

Yes, thank you!

Thanks for banning my daughter. I know she'd asked a question she'd had no right to ask. Clearly she was out of line. It reflects poorly on me as a parent that she had such nerve!! I was mortified to see that she'd disagreed with TPTB, and relieved to see you silence her so quickly, without a warning or anything.

You didn't even warn her that she was going to be banned. Rightly so. I'll make sure she remembers, one wrong post...just one! And she's out! No warning, no explanation. THAT'S the way to treat children: like children.

The Hijacking of this thread is a real shame, as is it's disrespect for Parm, surely one of the most genuine and respected posters on TORC.

Please stop. For Parm and all the other good posters who have posted in this thread stop. Take your negativity elsewhere in this forum just not here.

Please

EDITED: because it was thought to be a personal attack and we wouldn't want misunderstandings now would we

I am not certain how to read the last post, but I can only hope that all
that has been settled. If not, I am hoping for waters to calm.
My sentiment still stands, I am thankful, though I have not strayed from this side to venture beyond. To be honest, I do not know how, and perhaps that is best.

Duffy, please calm down. And dd, I suggest you edit your humble description. That's a TOS-violating personal attack too, and has no place in parm's thread.

People, I quite sincerely, and genuinely have had no idea, until much later, that any 'difficulties' had transpired. My reason for this thread came
as a very unrelated prompt. During a discussion with my students about
all the poems I have written, one student asked:
"...but have you said thank you for the fact that you have had the chance
to write all the things you do? In Japan, we say thank you to our teachers
for teaching us. Have you done the same for your TORC teachers?"
Well, upon reflection, I had wondered if had ever really directly done
that. I couldn't recall. Hence, this 'thank you' thread in the place where
administrating work is done.
Now, I know some will shake their heads and wonder 'Poor, Parm.
A poet with his head in the sand.' That may very well be true, and I shall live with my self-imposed naivete; however, my being here was a way
of demonstrating to my students in Japan, that I, too, am not above the
simple act of saying 'thank you' to my 'sensei'...those who have 'gone
before me'. (there is no plural in Japanese, so sensei applies to more
than one or only one depending on context)
All that said, if you do not enjoy my poems here, all very well and good.
I have enjoyed the tremendous opportunity to grow as a person and as
a writer here. For that, I am overwhelmingly thankful. For that.

And I also enjoy leaving behind...
bright blessings.

Parm:

I've enjoyed your posts many times, but this is not a good week for TORC. 20 people were banned last Sunday. Some had merely asked questions. Some had simply given email addresses out to the curious. Very few received any warning. We were asked to wait one week for them to sort it out. We waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Now, most-but not all bannees have been reinstated. No reason given to many of them, either for the banning or the reinstatement. Most had never had a warning of any kind. We're still wondering why the bannings happened?? And the prevailing feeling is, what's to prevent something like that from happening again?

I'll say thanks to Jonathan for at least trying to answer some questions tonight (even though I disagree with his method! :P) and thanks for bearing the brunt of all what's going on. You weren't the one who made these egregious errors, but you're here taking all the heat. You've admitted some mistakes even though it really shouldn't be you doing all of this. Thank you for trying.

I would like to thank Jonathan and Ted for providing a website that has given me much entertainment and enjoyment over the past few years.

Jonathan and Ted in another thread wrote:
" Some posters decided that they had better ways to run TORC, and when we disagreed with that assessment, they would not accept our position. From there, indignance and baiting grew to a level that led to last weekend's event. "
Joantthan and Ted own this board. They pay for it. They are entitled to set whatever rules they want to. It's their Property. It is Private Property, not a Public square.
From what I gather some people disagreed with some of Jonathan and Ted's policies. They offered suggestions. Jonathan and Ted turned down the suggestions, as the had the perfect right to do. That should have ended the discussion . Instead the people making the suggestions continued to push the issue, until it reached the point where some of the mods' credibility was at stake. The mods acted in defense of their authority (which is NOT a dirty word, despite what some people here think) and the worst offenders got banned. But, sadly, some other people whose only offense was perhaps bad timing in defending the banned themselves got banned. That injustice has been corrected. (Jonathan and Ted should feel free to correct me on any points.)
Frankly, the tone of several areas of TORC..Manwe in particular..had been getting ugly for the past couple of years. There were lots of warnings but no action. I got a feeling that the decision was made to let things ride in hope that things would calm down in Manwe after November, but things did not. If anything, I think the Powers The Be on the board should have cleaned up what was going on in Manwe a long time ago.
I know that supporting those in authority is not a popular thing to do in the world of the Internet, where defying authority..often for the sake of defying authoirty, is a way of life. But I think that Jonathan and Ted have been more then patient with a lot of what has been going on at TORC, and I am not suprised they have reasserted their authority in, sadly, the only way possible.

Thank you, Jon and Ted, for creating this site. Thank you for putting your time and money into it to make it what it is. Thank you for sharing it with all who love LotR and Tolkien's works. Thank you for putting up with everything that has been going on as of late and taking the time to answer all of the question threads. Thank you for creating a place where I have come to meet many good friends. :)

And, thank you also the the moderators, particularly the ones that have been active over the past couple of weeks. You've dealt with a lot. :)
