Kin-Strife: OOC

Yup, another tale has begun. To kick it off, let's introduce one of our two key protagonists - Amarwen of Edholland...

Name: Amarwen (Gondorian Sindarin – Earth Maiden)

Born: Third Age 1398, Edhellond

Race: Númenorean

Height: 5’ 8”

Build: Clean lines, curvaceous

Appearance: Blue black, glossy hair that falls straight to her hips, large clear grey eyes, fair skinned - Amarwen is a classically beautiful woman inspired by this:

Skills: Amarwen is educated and trained in all the various arts a noblewoman is expected to have mastered. She dances, plays a number of instruments but does not sing. She is widely read, has studied the history of her people extensively and can speak several languages. She rides well, hawk and hunt, and has a skill with the bow (at the archery range). She most certainly is not a warrior and has received no martial instruction in combat or war.

Character: Amarwen was a warm hearted, rambunctious and joyous child with an honest nature, largely innocent of the world. Amarwen has been raised to place her family ahead of herself. She is very easy to love.

History: Amarwen is the only child of the Lord and Lady of Edholland. She was born into a family distantly related to Eldacar through a daughter of Hyarmendacil, and she was cherished. Noble and wealthy, well loved by the people of Edholland, Amarwen’s childhood is a happy and safe one. Her family enjoys the peace their life, retired from the royal court, affords them. They are far enough away that the cut and thrust around Gondor’s throne little affects them.

All of this changes when Castamir usurps the throne and deposes Eldacar. Eldacar flees in such haste that he cannot even take his son with him. The first Amarwen hears of this is when her father is summonsed to Castamir to swear his allegiance before Gondor’s new king. Amarwen’s father agrees without delay, eager to assure the continued safety of his people and his family. Neither her father nor Amarwen could be aware that by attending Minas Tirith, the course of their lives are about to be irrevocably altered.

Castamir needs to obtain heirs in swift order, ideally with a suitably royal descendant. However Castamir has a problem in that all suitable noblewomen of appropriate descent and rank are either already married or have joined Eldacar with their families in exile. Thus, when Amarwen’s father brings his family to court, Castamir finds himself presented with an opportunity: an unwed maiden of suitable noble stock. Powerful and inclined to use it, he effectively extorts Amarwen’s father – his daughter or the good people of Edholland.

We meet Amarwen the day she is propelled from safe, happy obscurity directly into the perilous heart of Gondor’s kin-strife: the day she weds Castamir the Usurper. It is not a happy day.

And now introducing you to another of our protagonists. This will be added to further as the tale progresses.

Name: Halvarin

Race: Númenorean

Born: 1395 of the Third Age in Pelargir

Height: 6’0”

Build: Lean, muscular

Appearance: Thick dark hair that goes just past his shoulders, slightly curly. Blue-gray eyes with a rough, short-cropped facial hair. Inspired by this: https://katiemorningstar.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/mohammad-amin-moshtaghan.jpg

Skills: Accomplished swordsman and an even better mariner. Halvarin is recognised amongst the Gondorian Ship Wright Guild as a skillful navigator, following in his father's steps.

Character: A quiet, easy going demeanour yet can be forceful should he see injustice. He is very much a loyal son, but he keeps his own counsel and is his own man. Halvarin has a deep set of principals that he does not surrender quietly.

History: Halvarin was born into a prominent Ship Wright family in Pelargir. His father is the head of the Ship Wright Guild, a powerful political force within Minas Tirith's court. Like his father, Halvarin is a keen mariner. He has risen swiftly to the position of Master Navigator and is expected to continue on to captain a ship and crew and possibly lead the Ship Wright's Guild as well just as his father has.

Halvarin is a strong supporter of the Line of Kings, however in the tumult leading to the deposition of Eldacar he found his father and his Guild supporting the claim of a highly ranked Guild officer - Castamir, Master of Ships. Troubled inwardly, Halvarin remained loyal to his family and his guild though he was reluctant to do so. He resolved to allow matters to run their course, hoping that Castamir's superior royal descent would prove to be in the best interests of Gondor and the Guild. His father rises in position as a result of his relationship to the new King. With his father one of Castamir's principal advisors, Halvarin finds himself privy to more than he might wish to be.

His position is rocked when Halvarin observes the wedding of the new King. It is clear to him that the King's new wife is more captive than anything else. His concern grows over time.
