Luthy -- as soon as you get the next part up, I'll write the one after that.

All -- because no one said otherwise, I did put the BofT on my site. You can see it at: http://geocities.com/realityanalyst/bookoftorc.html It's just easier for my to access it that way, when I'm at school and want to work (and can't get to threads.)

No, not dead... at least, I'm not. And I haven't forgotten... it's my muse that's dead, I used her up, or poisoned her, or something. She won't let me write. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0> Maybe someone else can do this part whilst I try to resuscitate her? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> I simply cannot come up with a way to start... or what to say... or how to end... or... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Sorry <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Luthy

Jeanlily, however, just sleeps. For 15 hours. Man, that girl likes to get up late. [hey, I didn't say it had to be a long part!]
------------

Jeanlily snorted in her sleep and rolled over. Suddenly, she jerked upright and looked around for a clock. Oh, it wasn't too late. A moment later, sleep had taken the girl once again, and she was swept away in a glorious dream. In it, she had gone to TORC . . . oh wait, she was there. Even better . . .

Oh, well, see, therein laid my problem -- I thought I actually had to write something longish... and couldn't think of what to write about someone sleeping, and sleeping, and sleeping... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

If you want to do the next part (as I'm busy and feel bad holding you up) I can probably do the one after that... if it's not about somebody sleeping <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Luthy

Um,I think waiting for new members would be useless. This place would get buried deep in the many pages of TORC and be forgotten in a manner of weeks.

Was Luthy editing? If she doesn't have time anymore, could someone possibly tell me what it was she had to do and I'll do it myself.

Hey, don't worry about finding the edited stuff! You can find everything so far, edited and all, here: http://www.bundle.0 ... ftorc.html

I promise.

Now, as for the next part, which no one wants to write, so I will.

Meanwhile, Lexi and Luthy talk some more, and wonder when the others will get up. They have a deep and theoretical discussion about the markings Lexi is seeing (and wasn't Boromir also?) and conclude through no science whatsoever that it was indeed odd. Luthy also tells Lexi about what Galad told her and Jeanlily.

===============================================================================

Luthy stood up, stretched, and began pacing around the room. “I’m bored,” she announced to the TORC-world in general.

Lexi smiled from whence she sat. She was not offended by this rather bland statement that she was not that interesting. They had been up for several hours, and no one had come. It didn’t help that neither really felt like exploring, so they had stayed in the Bird and the Baby the entire time, experimenting with coffee, chocolate, tea, and just how quickly they could run to the bathroom after the twentieth cup of each. That was one good thing about TORC, at least. There were no specific places for privies, but if you ran outside *really needing* one, it would just be . . . there. Both Lexi and Luthy made good use of this discovery, thank goodness.

“Maybe someone will get up,” Lexi suggested, trying to be optimistic, but really more in lethargy. One would have thought that after the amount of caffeine she had had (they had caffeine!! Lots, and lots!!) she would have been hyper. Nope. She had just had to much, and had come out on the other side to exhaustion, her body protesting the very thought of liquids.

“Yeah, maybe. ‘Course, we’ve been waiting forever and still nobody’s here. And if we wait for another forever, nobody’ll probably come.”

“You have a better idea?”

Luthy pondered this for a moment. “Let’s have a deep and theoretical discussion about the strange markings you’re seeing.”

“What? The discussion is theoretical?”

“Come on!” Luthy suddenly exclaimed. Some of the caffeine was wearing off, and she was waking up. Funny how that happened. Nothing was moving unnaturally or rapidly in her eyesight either.

“Where are we going?”

“The Library! Reading Room! Thing!”

“You are using waaaay too many exclamation marks for comfort,” Lexi grumbled in reply, but followed her friend anyway.

The two of them reached the Reading Room, and Luthy guided Lexi to a low-slung couch. As Lexi sat down, she noticed that there was a slightly different bite-mark pattern here on the couch, and around the masses of books. She was just inspecting them (and deciding that they were actually a little annoying, what with all the tiny numbers) when Luthy pulled up a small stood and sat, looking down at her.

“How are you feeling?” Luthy asked.

“Um . . . fine?” Where was this going?

“Normal? Healthy?”!

“Yes! Why?”

“Why do you want to know?”

“I just do, okay?”

“Are you afraid of not knowing?

Lexi paused. “What?”

“Ah, ha! I knew it!”

Lexi sighed, decided she didn’t sound long-suffering enough, and sighed again. “This is really no time to play psychologist.”

Luthy pouted. “Why not?”

“Well . . .”

“Are you afraid of psychologists?”

“Yes!”

Now it was Luthy’s time to stop and blink, a bit confused at Lexi’s over-fast answer. “You are?”

“Absolutely. Terrified.”

“I sense you are not being completely honest with me.”

“Tell me more, master. Teach me. Mold me.”

“Master?”

“Yes, Yoda.”

“Let’s not play psychologist anymore.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Silence, like a great wingéd creature, descended on them, and opened its claws, about to strike –

“So, tell me more about these marks you and Boromir can see.”

– And was crawled away, looking hurt because of the sudden onset of Luthy’s speech.

“There’s nothing more to explain, really,” Lexi said, bracing herself up on the couch with one elbow. “There are just a bunch of tiny bit-marks. And I’m starting to see numbers – everywhere! It’s like this whole place is made of numbers!”

“Well, it is the internet, after all.”

“I suppose. But what do you think it means?”

“I don’t think it means *anything*,” Luthy answered firmly.

“But what if it does?”

“Are you afraid of its meaning?” Lexi glared, so Luthy shook her head and rephrased: “Then we don’t know and there’s no point in worrying about it. The others can do the worrying for us. Boromir can be out official Worrier. Or Shannon – she seems pretty good at it.”

“But it is weird,” Lexi pressed.

“Everything is weird. This is the world of computers, fandoms and fan fictions. Being weird is its job. But who cares? This is TORC!”

Lexi grinned. Luthy was right, really. TORC was wonderful. But still, “You really don’t know?”

“No! Well . . . Luthy reconsidered, remembering an earlier conversation, and not one with Lexi. “Maybe I do. When we were separated from you, Jeanlily and I met Galad.”

“Galad’s here? And you didn’t tell me?!”

“No, he’s not here. He sort of . . . disappeared. I don’t know how. But he did say that something – he doesn’t know what – was wrong with Tolkieonline. Something that has never happened before, and he couldn’t stay.”

“Is that all?”

“I think.”

Lexi lay back down on the couch, and stared up at the ceiling, more than fifteen feet above. She watched as the tiny numbers squirmed, like they were trying to get out. They were running. ‘What is it? Tell me?’ she wanted to cry, but couldn’t. They screamed back to her to get out if she could. And then it came. Some creature more minuscule than any of the others, but eating them, devouring them in its sharp teeth. Lexi felt frozen as she stared at the pearly white eyes, and realized it was completely blind. Blind, but destroying everything that allowed it to survive. Lexi felt cold now, not just stuck. It would eat all of TORC. They would be trapped; all of them. There was no way to get out. They –

“Hello, Lexi, are you awake?” Lexi jerked upright, knocking her head against Luthy.

“Yeah,” she said. “I just . . .” Lexi couldn’t remember, she looked up at the ceiling, but it was normal. “I was drifting off I guess. Sorry.”

“No problem.”

===

Boromir awakes feeling rather sore, and finds out he has been sleep-walking for [the first time in his life? Is it?] He totally doesn't recognize where it is, and says some line like: Well, Toto, I don't think we're in the Reading Room anymore. In fact, he's in the Workings of TORC. He wanders about, looking at things and discovering others, but the Managers (who are wearing dark glasses and whose names we never learn) kick him out into the Bird and the Baby where he meets up with Luthy and Lexi.
======

Boromir's first impression when he woke up was the one he had made falling on the floor, which gave way slightly beneath him. The second was a pounding headache. He groaned. Where was he?

Fighting his incredible desire to continue to lay there and not get up, Boromir pressed one hand to his head and pushed up on the other one. A rush of pain assailed him, and he felt a little lightheaded. "Dang it," he muttered, and stayed up anyway. In a few minutes, the bulk of the ache had gone away, and Boromir was able to look around.

It was quite dark, wherever he was, but not a pitch dark. No, it seemed more *grey* than that -- like someone had turned down the switch of reality, and all the lighting was halfway. He was in quite a large room, but it was covered with a slender, white, and string-like material, strung here and there with the visual randomness of a toilet-papered house. Or a spider's web.

Touching the material, Boromir found that it was of a very odd quality. His hand did not go through it, but it did seem to slide along the stuff, and off it, as if his hand would rather not stay in contact with the webbing. Boromir stood, stretched, and squinted into the pale darkness. In one direction, or perhaps two, he fancied he could see a wall of tiny compartments.

"Well, Toto," Boromir muttered, making light of the dark situation. "I don't think we're in the Reading Room anymore. I guess I've been sleepwalking." This sounded silly to him, as Boromir, by nature, was not a sleepwalker. But he was willing to grasp any possibility, as long as it explained *why* he was here -- even though it left out the little details, like where here was. "I wonder. . . ."

Once the thought came to him, Boromir was completely set on finding more evidence of the small bite marks that had plagued his conscience before, and had led him to the Reading Room -- and, he supposed, later here -- in the first place.

But before Boromir could find what he was looking for, someone said his name. "What?" Boromir asked in reply, feeling a little annoyed. He turned to see two people dressed in black and wearing sunglasses. If they had been a shade lighter, he would not have been able to distinguish them from the surrounding darkness.

"Come with us."

"Hey, who are you?"

They looked at each other, and, though showing no emotion, seemed to communicate what they wanted to say. "We are the Managers," answered the one who seemed to be doing the talking. Boromir mentally named him Manager #1. "Come with us."

"Why?"

One of them -- Manager #2 -- grabbed Boromir by the arm and followed the first Manager out. After only a minute or two, Boromir lost all track of direction, and finally just closed his eyes. It was dizzying to walk with the Managers. At first, they would walk straight towards a stretch of the whitish threads, and Boromir was sure they would become stuck. But then -- somehow -- an opening would be there, and they would pass through unharmed.

Eventually, they came to a door and stopped. "Do not try to come back," Manager #1 said. "You will not be able to. But you are on the right track. Look out for Tolkienonline for us. But don't interfere. We are the Managers." And then Manager #2 threw Boromir out.

Boromir gasped, and clapped his hands over his eyes at the sudden onslaught of light. It may not have been so very bright, but it certainly seemed so after . . . wherever he had been. The workings of TORC, he guessed, judging by the Managers.

"Boromir!" exclaimed Luthy, who had just entered the room with Lexi. "You're up!"

"Where did you come from?" Lexi answered.

"Right there," Boromir turned and pointed at the door. He was still squinting, but his eyes had begun to adjust.

"Right where?"

Boromir looked towards the door, but there was nothing there. Nothing at all. Not even bite marks. Boromir walked toward it and ran his fingers along the wall, but it looked terribly normal.

"I don't know," he answered Lexi. "There was a door." He looked up at them. "What are you doing here?"

Lexi and Luthy exchanged a look, sighed, and turned to Boromir to explain.

Aw, you like my work. I feel so loved. Luthy: it's okay. I seem to be on a Book of TORC writing streak. I don't really know why. But I can see it in my mind! I can *feel* how things are going to happen. Did you know that the story is already 39 pages long? I think I'll take it to forty now . . .

Quote for the day: "If I don't eat soon
then I'll die. And if I die . . . then I won't eat
soon." (Spike Milligan)

Sam thinks about what is going on, and is confused, and goes back to sleep. He and Frodo will not leave there room for quite some time, possibly until the Ainariels come knocking. Which won't be soon, seeing how they are sleeping.

========================

Samwise Gamgee, one of the most famous hobbits in all his people's history, was lost in confusion. He didn't know what to *do*. He didn't even really know where they were! And he certainly didn't want to venture out without Ainariel -- or Shannon, as we call her -- as she seemed to know what was going on.

But he was not designed or brought up for such puzzles. And so, with a great determination of mind, Sam did something both very difficult and very wise: he slept. It might be some time until the Ainariels woke anyway, so why worry? It would only make him even more exhausted. And they hadn't been there more than a few hours anyway, surely a few more wouldn't hurt.

And there would be plenty to do in the morning (or early afternoon) when Frodo awoke. Then Sam could make sure his master was well-cared-for and fed. It was better to sleep.

And so he did.
