living words

the feel of paper
the smell of ink
the magic of the transfer-
letters appear out of nothing,
letters join together into words,
words march across the page
and sentences are visible thoughts.

thoughts dance and run and breath
once free of the mind in which they were born.

mind and hand give birth to thoughts.
pen and paper give birth to expression.
their marriage brings to the world
life and love and hate and passion.

does anything live more truly
breathe more deeply
than scribbled words on torn notepaper?

read them now on your computer screen,
in machine printed perfect lines.
tell me now what art the world has lost.
where are our scribes today?
Gutenberg brought literature to the masses

thank him for me.

i miss the scribes.
