The House of Queen Berúthiel - The Cat-Lovers Guild (Part 3)

The varied peoples of Middle-earth at times found unity in their pursuits, and all too often experienced deep rifts. Engage in lively conversations as we banter about the differences between the Alliances, and recruit for our People as well. Remember, keep it friendly.

My cats have all gotten along with my dogs just fine. The DOGS are the ones that have to watch out!

The key is for the cat to stand its ground. If it runs, the dog will chase it, so have the dog on a leash. I would also make sure the cat has a safe place to retreat to - either under the furniture, or up high somewhere.

Tell the dog 'no!' if it tries to chase the cat, and snap the leash to get his attention off it.

My first time introducing a cat and a dog, I forgot the dog didn't have a collar on. So, when he chased the cat, there was NOTHING to hold on to! He actually grabbed the cat twice in his jaws before I was able to get in his way.

The cat wound up clinging to the Venetian blinds in the living room, but was unharmed.

Within a couple of weeks, they were playing together, and eventually sharing the same bed. I just made it really really clear to the dog that chasing the cat was NOT going to happen.

With my current cat, he just stood his ground, and if the dogs got out of line, he swatted them on the nose
Here's a photo of his introduction to one of my German shepherds.

Thank you, Sunsilver...that really helped. It helps that Riley is a coward at heart, I think. We'll wait until after Tuesday, I think.

Moses apparently thinks I'm the only one who can do anything for him. He's determined to go out, but me holding L while dad opens the door for him isn't enough. MOM has to hold the other cat AND open the door. It won't work any other way!

I'm hoping tonight will be better than last night. Cats all worked up, Moses wanted out, wouldn't keep quiet, I had to resort to drastic measures...closing the bedroom door!

Been awhile, hasn't it? :) Well, I'm back...

Vana, glad to hear your daughter's cat came back!

Sorry to read about Toby...

Good luck with Licorice! There can indeed be issues; remember when Mackie was new here and Oreo's nose was out of joint. They did come to a modus vivendi, though it wasn't always smooth. But now that Mackie's an "only cat," hubby keeps saying that Mackie needs a pet! But I don't want any more responsibility that way; I'm freakin' 70, for crying out loud!

Of course I still miss Oreo. Life is ever so much simpler without him, but he was my baby... There are times I keep thinking I see some motion out of the corner of my eye, where I know Mackie is not, but then I go naah...

Ah, age is just a number! Well, that's what my mom said before two back surgeries and hip replacement...

;)

Last night I was ready to strangle a cat. Moses is doing his best to drive me insane, I swear. But we've been letting him out, holding Licorice as we do. L seems to have an "out of sight out of mind" mentality. He doesn't see Mo, so he forgets he hates him.

We're going to have to keep Licorice in tonight since he goes to the vet tomorrow morning and I can't control his food/water intake at night. So I need to make sure there's a litter box and bed ready for him. I expect things are going to go crazy.

Sleep, what is this sleep you speak of?

Morwenna!!! *crashtaclehug*
I was just thinking about you the other day
And how long it had been since I saw you on the boards.
And you did see it. I've seen mine.

Iris, your babies think you are a god.
Good luck with Licorice tomorrow.

LK, when Rascal wants in the house from the garage
She all but pounds on the kitchen door
She make you think all the hounds of Hell are at her heels.
And when you open the door, she saunters in like nothing's happening.
Of course, two minutes later, after a bite of food and a drink of water
She's yowling to be let out again.
Goofy cat.

Just got back from the vet with Pawkah.
Just her yearly exam and all things are good with her.

Love to the kitties.

I think you're a little confused, Calma...my cats think THEY'RE gods and I don't worship them enough. ;)

Today I was doing a workout video and Pharaoh thought he had to help...then got irate and tried to bite me. These people who make the videos really need to include cats...now that would be a realistic video.

Got that right!

I can't do floor exercises without Sindarin flopping himself down beside me, or across my legs. He thinks since the floor is his exclusive domain, the only possible reason I have for being down there is to pet and pay attention to him, so he wants to make it easy for me.

Not only does he get in my way, but I'm usually sweaty and he's usually shedding, so I end up with itchy cat hairs stuck to my skin.

Calma---glad all is well with Pawkah.

Licorice said he's had a bad day, but snuggles help. :)

Mom and I took him to the vet this morning. It's actually The Animal Welfare Council/Allegheny Spay and Neuter Clinic. Their main mission is to provide affordable spay/neuter services to people. They also raise awareness on animal care, over population, etc. and now provide basic veterinary care and grooming. We took both Pharaoh and Moses to them. They're having a special discount this month. Anyhow, we picked him up about 3 and he was NOT. HAPPY. He'd peed his blanked and was fussing. I held him all the way home, at first he tried to get away, but then flopped across my arms. When I got him in the bedroom, he ate and then wanted cuddles...he fell asleep on my lap. I had to leave for a while, but I just checked on him and he's doing good and the surgical area looks okay. He hasn't cleaned himself entirely yet, but I'm sure he will once he starts feeling less drugged. :)

Tomorrow I have to leave at 6:30 a.m. for training as township auditor and I won't be home until around 6. I'm sure he'll be okay, but I'm a little anxious. If he wasn't recovering as well as he is, I wouldn't go. But as it is, we'll make sure he has water and crunchies.

At one point he got past me in the doorway and found Pharaoh. I held him still to see what would happen. They stared and then Pharaoh hissed and I put Licorice back in the bedroom. He was like, "Duuuuude. Not cool." :rolf:

LOL.... "Duuuude! Not Cool!" :lmbo:
Hope Licorice is healing well.
Too bad you can't be with him tomorrow.
But I'm sure he'll be ok as long as he's separated from Moses and Pharaoh.

Good luck with your training tomorrow.

Hope the training goes well, and that Licorice is okay.

Crazy Mackie: he loves to sleep under the covers, even when there's no one else in bed. We have a comforter on top of the bedspread, and he likes to get up under the comforter. If we're looking for him, one of the first places we check is for large lumps in the bedding. He spent the biggest part of the last two evenings (during the dog show) under that comforter. How does he breathe under there?? I said to hubby he wants to get back in the womb. Hubby replied that he never had it so good in the womb, with 4 littermates!!

He wants to experience the feeling of being in the womb alone!

He did good last night, but boy can that cat pee! The other two don't fill up three litter boxes like this one fills one! Rob pointed out that's what young animals do...eat and pee.

We had an incident last night. I was backing out of the room he was in and he slipped past me and went into the bedroom. By the time I got the light on he'd chased Moses under the bed...I didn't even know Mo was upstairs. Got the little criminal under control and then comforted Mo as much as I could.

ETA: the training was boooooring! And if we did to our supervisors what they're reccomending, they'd think we'd gone insane. The training is designed for much larger townships, not one with only 700 residents and 900 dogs.

Made myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich today when I got home.

Of course, all the cats came running when they saw I was in the kitchen, but as soon as they discovered I wasn't eating any meat or fish, they all lost interest.

Except for Sindarin.

I've never owned a cat as crazy about peanut butter as he is.

Always good when the kitty is an angel. Of course, that probably means they're planning something...

Which reminds me...I have to get Pharaoh and Moses rabies shots this spring.

Licorice is settling right in...much to Moses' chagrin. He's still mostly in his bedroom. (No, our cats are not spoiled!) But he and Pharaoh have had a few face-to-face events. They play footsies under the door too. Mo won't have anything to do with him.

I've been sick with some vertigo and yesterday afternoon I went into his room with a blanket and curled up and snoozed with him draped across my arm and also snoozing. :)

He's been sneezing a lot...I'm hoping it's from the sudden pollen influx with early warming.

Oh, good luck! I hope it's as you say.

Cats are crazy. Mackie used to like human snack foods when he was a kitten. Oreo loved anything pork, true, but he also liked spaghetti sauce. Mici, the cat I had in single adulthood, would eat mushrooms, and she's the one who'd get high on the pulp on grape stems. Kitchy, the cat I grew up with, ate potato chips. You just never know.

My guys are sneezing too. So am I for that matter.

I should probably see about getting them to the vet. No rabies shots though, they never go outside.

See if they will give you L-Lysine powder to sprinkle on the kitteh food. It seems to help prevent upper respirator symptoms for cats. I give it to China if she starts sneezing and it clears it right up. Just one little scoop sprinkled on her food once a day does the trick.

LK, not to put a damper on things, but if something gets into your home (like a bat) with rabies, your babies could be in danger. :( I don't know if mice or rats carry, but I know we've had to be careful with bites.

Licorice has the run of the upstairs during the day. Today I laid down for a nap (got my husband's cough...yay) and after playing for a while, he and Pharaoh laid down with me.

Now, if we can just get him and Moses to call a truce...

True, but getting in might prove a little difficult since I never open windows during warm weather except during the daytime, and only when I'm home.

The rest of the time they stay closed. And locked.

I don't want ANYTHING coming in, be it animal or human.

Rabies shots: in this state they're required, whether the cat is indoors or out. If the cat bites someone and there's no proof of a rabies vaccine, the person has to go through all those rabies tests--not fun, as I understand. And who knows what happens to the cat.

Not clear on what you mean by telling Gandalf. What I meant was if someone is going to break in----which has happened in this building before, although not to me----I'm not going to make it easy for them by leaving the windows open/unlocked.

And it's been a while since my guys were young too, so I don't remember how much they peed. Sorry.

I don't think rabies shots are required here. (except for dogs.) I'm sure my vet would have told me if they were.

Ninja Kitteh strikes again!

Today Rascal had a vet appointment.
Saw her all morning until it was time to put her in the carrier

Poof!

She turned into smoke
And disappeared.

We looked all over the downstairs.
And had all the upstairs doors closed.
She's nowhere to be seen.

And as I'm typing this, guess who poked her head out?
Yeah, and then she fell back into ninja mode again.
Such an untrusting kitteh.

eta: 1:12 pm pst.

Well, ninja Kitteh thought she was safe and came out.
Lying on my son's bed having a grand snooze
We caught her.

She was not pleased and let us know about it.
All the way to the Vet.
Fortunately, the Vet is only three minutes away.

She's fine.
Just her annual check up.
She's not gained any weight
And her teeth are perfect.

Brought her home and opened the carrier
Zzzzzoooommmm! Ninja Kitteh was gone
Up the stairs like smoke.

She's good to go for the year.
