The House of Queen Berúthiel - The Cat-Lovers Guild (Part 3)

The varied peoples of Middle-earth at times found unity in their pursuits, and all too often experienced deep rifts. Engage in lively conversations as we banter about the differences between the Alliances, and recruit for our People as well. Remember, keep it friendly.

Hello all! How are the kitties?

Licorice is settling in. He's still trapped upstairs, but he and Moses have had a few encounters, controlled ones. We're training him to like the harness..I'd like to get him to the vet soon, he's been doing a lot of sneezing, but seems healthy otherwise.

None of them like me going to work. I don't either. :( But I keep telling them they get more kitty treats this way, and to prove it, I bought them a lot on Friday. ;)

My older cat, Rocky, brought in his first kill of the season last weekend, a small vole. (Sigh :cry2: ) My younger one, Ria, played with the corpse for ages.

My cats' outside space is limited to a 10 foot by 30 foot enclosure in my garden. I have to console myself with the thought that any small mammal silly enough to move into a space which must smell very thoroughly of cats, deserves to be removed from the gene-pool.

Welcome to the Guild, Felarof, Rocky, and Ria!
Always happy to share a warm spot in the sun
And a bowl of milk with the new members. :D

My girls outside time consists of a mesh tent
About 4 x 3 feet.
I have lost too many to the road
To allow my girls to roam free anymore.
A 10 x 30 enclosure would seem like an acre to them.
Good way to keep them safe and sound
And too bad for the critters who venture through their territory.

Again, welcome.
Hope to see you around.

Thank you for the welcome, Calma. I agree, there are too many hazards in the outside world, and wouldn't let my cats roam free. Happily, these days I have a garden, and was able to make part of it cat-secure:
Image
There's a litter tray under the composter.

At the end of 2015, I adopted two cats from a shelter, Rocky and Bridie. They were about 6 years old, not related so far as I know, but long-term friends.
Image

Six months later, Bridie developed cancer and had to be euthanized.

Had Rocky been older, I might have kept him as an only cat, but at his age I thought he'd be better with a companion, as he was used to that. For my own sake, I had really loved Bridie's fluffy tortoiseshell coat, and I wanted another cat like that. My previous cats have all been rescues, but this time I bought a pedigree kitten. Ria is a Norwegian Forest Cat. Two months after Bridie's death, I brought home Ria, then a 3-month kitten. Initially Rocky regarded her as a nuisance interloper, but by the time she was six months old, he had started playing with her occasionally, and he tolerates her much better now.
Image

I live alone, so the cats are good company.

Felarof, your cats are lovely. Rocky looks a lot like my Oreo, who had to be put down last June at 16 years after having been through 3 months of treatment for severe urinary problems and a relapse. There was only so much we could do, and at his age... but we had him from a kitten. Oreo had more white on his body than Rocky, and the edge of the black under his right eye dipped in a sort of teardrop shape.

Our remaining cat, age 9, whom we also had from a kitten (took ages for him & Oreo to learn to get along), is Macaroon (Mackie), orange tabby (swirled) with white belly, muzzle, and feet. He has a little black spot in the inside corner of his right eye, that runs up halfway along the inside of his eyelid and dissipates in his fur. My husband said the both of them had prison tats. I say Mackie has a bad eyeliner job.

Ours were indoor cats all along, and even though Mackie loves to sniff the outdoor air, if you try taking him outdoors he freaks. We tried Oreo on a makeshift leash when he was young and he only stood stock-still. I lost several cats to traffic in my youth in a small town, so when I went on my own I always had solely indoor cats, including the white longhair I had in my single days who would get out whenever she could (she was raised indoor-outdoor, and I got her as an adult). She was pretty old when cancer finally got her.

Before I retired, I lived in a flat with no garden. At that time I kept two cats as indoor-only. One was used to that from a kitten, so it didn't worry her. The older cat, though clearly raised as a house cat, had spent some time on the streets as a stray before being rescued. He was very happy to be in a home again, and showed no inclination to escape. I always grew grass in tubs for them to nibble, and I had a window with a wide ledge, which I was able to enclose with netting, so they could at least sit in the open air when they felt like it, even though it just had a view over the street.

I know most cats would like time outdoors... but you can't explain to them about cars, dogs, people with guns, getting stuck in trees or drains, hostile animals... (At least in Britain we don't have rabies, but there are enough other nasties out there.) I wish good luck to everyone who feels that they can let their cats roam free, but for myself, the enclosure gives me peace of mind.

My girls in their tent

Pawsha loves to go into her tent.
Well, she thinks it hers anyway.
All I have to do is call out: "Pawsha tent!"
And she comes running.
No matter where in the house she is
She flies to the back door and waits for me to open it.
I open the door and she runs out and into the tent.
She stays in it for hours.
I usually take things outside and sit at my patio table so I can keep an eye on her.
She lets me know when she wants to come in.

Had to take Figs and Zaive to the vet last Friday. They've both been sneezing like crazy. Zavie also has an abscessed tooth.

Zavie got an antibiotic shot, cause I couldn't possibly pry his mouth open to give him pills, not with that tooth. Figs got pills (which are cheaper than the shot). I can get pills down Figs, but he's starting to run from me when he sees me coming at pill time. He's only got one more today then two tomorrow. I just hope it's doing him some good. They're both still sneezing, just not as hard or as often.

If they have to have another dose, I think I'll get Figs the shot, too. I'm really concerned about him cause he now seems to have stopped eating and drinking. I'm not sure about that, I'm gone at least 10 hours out of the day, so it's hard to watch him.

Siiggggghhhhhh! I don't need these worries. :(

Thanks Calma.

He is going back this Monday, for the shot this time. He's still sneezing pretty bad, but at least I know he's eating and drinking OK. That's a relief.

Took Sindarin to the vet this past Friday. He doesn't have a respiratory infection, they determined it's just allergies for him. Mostly watery eyes with an occasional sneeze.

These kitties are costing me a fortune!

Happy to hear your guys are doing better, LK.

We are in the midst of a doozey of a thunder storm.
Back in the day, my Snowball would have gone right to her hidey place
And stayed there until the coast was clear.
Now.... Well now my fluzzies are just soooo cool.
Pawsha is looking our the window in the garage door
Pawkah is snoozing on the hood of the car.

"We are dumpster kitteh's.
We fear nothing.
We are tough *itches."

Rascal is upstairs sleeping on her bed
Not giving a darn.

Lovin' the thunder.

Pawsha decided I really wasn't her mom
And ignored me.
Rascal and Pawkah were there usual aloof selves.
When I offered up cheese, Pawsha changed her mind
And decided I really was her mom
And then wouldn't leave me alone for nothing...
